I ran across a couple of these No Doubt mp3s right around the time they released their most recent CD, I grabbed a few of the songs to see how I liked it, considering I liked their first CD, and the crappy radio stations around me play nothing new except for 1 song from each CD.

I thought to myself "hmm, I like how the songs sound except they're really freaking boring how they're so horribly repetitive" and that was the deciding factor in my not purchasing the CD.

  5. Re:No distractions on Finding the Programming Zone? · · Score: 1

Amen to that, noise drives me insane when I'm trying to code, although it depends what KIND of noise..

    Here is my formula:

MUSIC: I'll listen to System of a Down, etc at extremely loud volumes while driving, but I simply cannot code with anything but classical, or slow like Enya or something. And even at that, I'll usually only listen to music for the first half hour, then get so into what I'm coding that I don't notice the music is there, THEN, I notice the music, get angry, and turn it off.. and continue coding.

    ENVIRONMENT:
I'm currently debating if my big leather chair is counter-productive considering its so comfortable it makes me sleepy. I also keep two small fish tanks on my desk near my monitors, my favorite is on the left with my two Dwarf Puffers in it (they're very calming, they swim like hummingbirds, if that makes sense), if I get really frustrated with a problem I just stare at them, they stare back, and I'm instantly calmed down, THEN, back to coding.

My room is also dark (I'm in the basement), and sometimes I bring my laptop up to the kitchen table and work from there, where I can see outside and look at trees, that also calms me down and makes me work better.

    TIME:
Any time after noon it seems, at night is best because I don't get distracted or have to stop for anything (except sleep eventually).

    FUEL:
I do amazing things if I go to a book store (B&N or Borders in my case), get a nice latte with vanilla, sip on it, and write down about 4 pages of ideas for my code I'm about to write, then drive home while listening to very loud music, let the ideas cook and settle in, then start coding like a madman..

Thats how I do it :)

I live in Iowa, just outside the city of Davenport (part of the Quad Cities, big area).

Maybe I haven't seen the parts of Iowa that actually have decent technology, but Davenport seems pathetic. The thing that really annoys me, is we've got Cable, DSL, and recently 2.4Ghz Wireless, but they're all IN town.

I don't understand the logic in putting wireless in an area that can currently get cable or DSL, and yet theres large places outside of town (near my house) that only can manage 26.4k dialup.

Then again, satellite is another option but I've never heard one good thing about it (latency and all, ack).

A few months ago Iowa Farm Bureau sent out letters announcing that FB members could get low cost high-speed internet access.. two months later, turns out its 56k dialup for $15/month.

Maybe I'm just ignorant but I'm starting to hate this state, any attempt to advance in technology and everyone tries to fight it because it will cost them an extra $1 a year in taxes.

  16. Is this really that new? on Trimming Television to Sell More Ads · · Score: 1

Seems almost a year ago someone at work ( I work for a local fox news show) was talking about similar technology, except it actually played the show at a slightly higher speed, and lowered the pitch of the sound to compensate. It was enough to make the show significantly shorter, yet people didn't notice the small speed increase.

But since TV only displays at a certain FPS, I suppose this method might actually "drop" a frame here and there.. I'm really not sure.

Although, I wish I could do this with our news show, possibly run it twice the speed so I could go home early... But I can't, live tv sucks.

  20. Re:Christianity... on Tolkien's sources: Icelandic Sagas and Beowulf · · Score: 0, Redundant

I'm quite sure Tolkein wasn't Christian, but C.S. Lewis had read LotR and it drew him to christianity.

Also Tolkein considered his books "sub-creations", just as God created us in his image, we also have the desire to create things like books, and art.

There was a good article in World Magazine (christian mag) about the LotR series, C.S. Lewis, and Tolkein, as well as Christian views of the subject. Which I was quite pleased to discover an open mind on the subject. It was featured in this issue (reg req).

slightly offtopic rant: It really annoys me how so many Christians totally rip on Harry Potter and LotR when they really know nothing about it. I'm a Christian (Open minded too, don't attempt to tell me otherwise) and I really enjoy LotR, and I see no problem with it. It's not like I pray to Gandalf every night.

It just seems theres quite a few Christians that need to educate themselves instead of making snap judgements, and trying to force it upon people, including other Christians.

And now I go deer hunting with my dad and I don't even get a kick out of shooting deer, I've actually never killed one for that matter.

The point is, just because kids play with so-called violent toys at children doesn't make them psychos. I think its their enviroment, or some sort of predisposition, chemical imbalance? I've seen so many insane kids that hit eachother with hammers that look so wired and disconnected because their parents feed them candy and french fries for every meal :) Nobody ever thinks about that possibility do they?
