Who are these people, that their opinions carry weight? Other than techie bloggers, I mean? If Linus, Donald Becker, Bill Gates, RMS, or Steve Jobs had an opinion on something, I'd consider caring.

Soak the beans in benzene, let the cafffeine dissolve out, and wash 'em. Why do you think brewed decaf coffee has that nasty acidic smell? SWP decaf has the debatable plus of having no flavor. What does Gloria Jean's know about coffee, since you flavor your beans? Flavoring should be added POST-brew, otherwise the flavor components oxidize over time yielding the ungodly brown substance you guys serve.

Ok, so I do the math and get 61MB/sec, or just under 1/2 the bandwidth of PCI. For 90% of the PCs out there, this is sufficient. For high end boxes, you can use 64bit or 66MHz PCI, or PCI bridges.
When was the last time that anyone at SCO's technical or legal departments created anything? Anyone? Anyone? This is jealousy of the inept for the creative, the lazy for the motivated, and the weak for the strong. Linus is an intellectual Giant for creating Linux - maybe its not the best OS, and maybe parts of his management style are annoying, but who else has created something this significant (besides Al Gore, who created the Internet)?

The nice part about Slammer is that it could just spew data - if it hit you, and you were vulnerable, you were infected. It didn't require any complicated TCP sessions, was MUCH nicer on host resources, and the entire hack fit inside a single packet. Hard to improve on this really, perhaps using LZIP to shrink the size of the payload.

If you want a mini computer, get a Zaurus. It has a real OS, real memory management, and under active open source development. debian-arm packages install just fine. With OpenZaurus, you get the latest ssh, media player, etc apps, on a color, backlit screen, etc. etc. Sounds like you have the wrong tool - how are you going to type?

You mention latency in programs starting...how sad. Most people are concerned with latency while the program is running - try encoding a video on a 1.5 GHz machine, then on a 3GHz machine. Astonishingly, there is a difference!
