  1. Re:lets get to the important Slashdot question... on GPS Cell Phone in Soda Can Form · · Score: 1

That link says "The phone itself reports GPS signal information to the cell towers which combine that with their own information." which to me means it's GPS plus triangulation. And yes, I have that phone, and mine says "GPS" on it too. But it's obviously more than just triangulation, because otherwise the phone wouldn't have to 'report' anything beyond its regular voice transmission.

Dial 911, yell "Help! The GPS on my cellphone doesn't work!" and then just wait in that exact spot. If the cops come right to that spot (and subsequently arrest you) then the GPS probably works. (Though, admittedly, it could be triangulation, so make sure to pick a tough spot to find).

Are there any Trekkas that are still running in New Zealand? I was there back in October, and didn't see any, unsurprisingly. Are these things just legend, or do they still exist? Now, mind you, I'm not suggesting anything like whether the Trekka would qualify for a "Worst Car" sort of award, I'm just curious since they're a bit of an oddball. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the Trekka was a New Zealand-assembled all-terrain vehicle (not 4-wheel drive, but with some sort of "all-terrain" differential) built off of Skoda parts in the early 1970s. There's a neat book on it too called "This is the Trekka".

You obviously didn't even read the linked document. It talks about how "1970's" is an older form and that 1970s is acceptable now. I was just pointing out to the parent that the using the apostrophe isn't always wrong. So your "Harvard-educated English teacher" preferred the MLA style, but that's not the only way to do things. And so, that means the parent to my comment went just a bit too far when he said an apostrophe *never* makes a plural, when in fact even the MLA would still say that, for example, "There are two l's in that word" is the proper way to pluralize "l".

That's not true, actually. An appostrophe is used in pluralizing numbers, letters, symbols, and abbreviations. See here: http://www.emory.edu/ENGLISH/WC/apostrophe2.html (scroll down to "Plurals of Numbers, Letters, Symbols, Abbreviations"). This means:

The three options on the top are Dr Divx(pay), Divx Pro(pay) and Divx Pro(adware). They moved the codec and player to the text link to make space for Dr Divx. That's all.

The Hitachi MpegCam was the first hard-drive camcorder, as far as I know. (Though this Samsung probably is the first MPEG4 HDD camcorder). I used it back in high school in 1997 and 1998. It looked like a large electric shaver with a camera instead of a shaving head, and with an LCD in the back. The one I used had a 340mb PCMCIA hard drive in it and stored about 20 or 40 minutes of video, I think. The video wasn't quite VHS quality -- you could definitely see the difference, though it wasn't like matchbook-sized video. It also had a digital camera feature that took higher quality pictures (at least for that time).

It was really neat for what it was at the time, though it probably didn't fill any niche real well. It didn't have a lot of storage, nor did it take particularly high quality pictures. But it was really small, and was a lot of fun to play around on. I even did part of a movie for Spanish class on it.
