Debian has had a synchronous stable version for Alpha, ARM, Intel x86, Motorola 680x0, PowerPC, and SPARC since mid 2000. Most recent stable release supports 11 architectures.

Grounding to a bucket wouldn't provide any real 'ground' reference or return path, so it has no function other than to remove any kind of user shock protection from the device.

That's true, but for any long-term manned exploration we have to start somewhere, and the Moon is magnitudes closer than the next celestial body. I see short-term missions (like those of Apollo) to be useless unless followed-up by some kind of semi-perminant habitation; even if it's just exploration for the sake of exploration.
Not really. Because the Moon has so much less mass than the earth, its gravity well is much smaller and getting off of it is much easier. As the saying goes: Once you're outside of the Earth's gravity well, you're halfway to anywhere in the Solar System.
