    For your last question, I'd think not. ECoG is just metal on the cortex. Damage? Probably. But it's not inserted into the cortex, so you get way worse signal initially. It's advantage is signal doesn't deteriorate over time.

    How do you propose to erase name from a grant? How can anyone show you a publication list without revealing who s/he is? Also, many field are so small that anyone worth his salt (read enough literature) should be able to spot a fellow researcher just from the writing style.

    Obviously you haven't read any of the reports. There is at least one as linked by JoshuaZ, a report for a NASA grant for preliminary study, and one by the japan association of space elevator. They have considered more problems with SE than you can think of. Though their prediction of the material development was a bit too optimistic.
