The best part about Slashdot for me was really the people who visit it. This site has had one of the most intelligent communities around. This is how the site is successful IMO. Really good people massing together behind it. Finding and promoting articles is one thing but the commentary is where it really takes off. Almost every time I view a story what I find more interesting is the story that develops below it. I really don't know of another site where I can attempt to follow a debate about nuclear fusion, and find a debate about Apple only a page apart. This is about to be taken away as the best and brightest around here are going to leave as they are fed up with these beta changes, and Slashdot as a quality site will die. The new site takes away from the comments and the user driven atmosphere and plasters it with pictures and wasted space. This protest may seem futile at first to the bigwigs at the top here, but like I said the best part about this site is the comments. Therefore, if the only comments left are ones complaining about beta, its going to be a very accurate view of the future of Slashdot from here onward if the beta continues.

I work in an office that is extremely poorly designed as an open office. There are still two cubes for mid level managers, and offices along the wall for the high level managers. The rest is all a mix of half height cube walls or no walls at all. There's an "island" counter near our area where people tend to put snacks and treats.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to concentrate or get any work done 90% of the time. It drives me insane, and after 5 years I am to the point of telling management I am going to leave if at least our area (IT) is not changed soon.
People are constantly talking/shouting nonsense and completely non work related shit across the entire office. Technically, this is still possible with cube walls as its not like they have any sound deadening but this atmosphere completely encourages people to talk to their neighbors and even their neighbor's neighbors. People don't even use phones a lot of the time and just yell across the office. The worst part is our area, with the island of snacks makes people show up like it's a water cooler and have little inter-office meetings and cell conversations there (again rarely work related). They also try to prod me and my co-worker into conversations with them from the island.
I am a Network Administrator and my co-worker who is a programmer are distracted the majority of the day by these drive by visits and shouts across the office (whether involving us or not). When you're trying to solve a critical server issue, multi-task multiple issues, or just concentrate on reading tech whitepapers it is impossible most of the time to effectively do it in this environment. I can't even imagine how bad it is for him as well being that writing code rarely goes well with constant interruptions.
This type of environment on paper might look good for "communication," but in reality it just breeds the wrong kind of communication. People are not getting their work done effectively because they are distracted which leads to them joining in on the distraction.
If I had my own office or we had a normal cube setup around here, our IT team alone would be like 400% more efficient and effective. Don't get me wrong I am not against taking breaks and the occasional distraction can be helpful, it's the constant nature of it in this office; and the way that it affects everyone at the same time that is an issue.
My wife was pretty against watching it at first. Although, she is with everything... takes me ages to get her to try a video game too and then once she does shes addicted to it more than I am.. Anyway, got her to start watching TNG in season 2 and told her it only gets a lot better as the characters develop. Now she loves watching it and we're almost through season 6, and have watched a few of the movies together as well. Problem with TNG is you cant really skip the first two seasons because there are some really good episodes and important events but the actors dont really start developing their characters till season 3+.
Asuming his opponent supports it? I know Ron Paul is against it, not sure about romney. Although considering his contributors I wouldnt be suprised if he was for it.
Why? You have people in the car all the time? How is it any more distracting then a person sitting there? Granted drivers distracted by a passenger is the leading cause of accidents but this wouldnt be any different...
"I'm guessing a few of you have opinions on this subject, so share them so I don't buy a piece of garbage."
You already did. You bought a mac......Sorry I had to XD
Really? I've had to replace my Blackberry Storm2 about 7 times now in the last year or so. And everyone I know who has a storm or a storm 2 has had about the same exact situation. The only durable blackberries seem to be the older curves. I would think the storm and the storm2 alone would make their number much higher.
"You are a stupid square idiot bald git aren't you? eh? I'm pointing at you, I'm pointing at you, but I'm not actually addressing you, I'm addressing the one prat in the country who has bothered to get a hold of this recording, turn it round and actually work out the rubbish that I'm saying. What a poor sad life he's got! Frankly your acts crap, anyway anybody could've done it, I hate the lot of you, bollocks to you!"
Pretty soon we wont be able to choose colours for our cars. Only different adverts. It will look like nascar but at least the politicians will be driving their ferraris still.

Still makes no sense why he turned into a smoke monster when all it did was give desmond a bloody nose. Also Jack seemed to have no issue going down there and doing what desmond did and getting out WHILE having a mortal stab wound, even though desmond was supposed to be special for this..
I only see out of one eye so this 3D movement is lost on me:(. I have never had depth perception or the ability to watch 3D movies/games. The positive side is I wont feel compelled to upgrade my LED TV when the 3D ones come out.
Thats like NASA's entire yearly budget right there these days. Well at least whatever they have left after having to waste so much on manbearpig investigations.
My company has done all this already except eliminating the free coffee... that will be the last straw. To quote office space "I'll set the building on fire"
(not really though)
Do not welcome our new beta overlords...

You can add "The Bad Mathematician" to your title now sir.
I for one welcome our new buggy riding African Grey Parrot overlords...

Not all IT fields have any real use for math. I am a Network Admin and I cant think of a time I have ever needed anything more than basic math skills.
So the next apple iphone requires a gas line in addition to a proprietary charger?

Someone had to say it...
Great Mars has internets that are four times faster than my home connection now. I wish I was martian.
Shit sounds like the Q Continuum. Better get Patrick Stewart to help defend us.

Of course, what I got out of it was:

He's awfully british for an american then.

Manbearpig is coming look busy

Could we just continue this trend and call it a shield against alien invasions? I for one welcome the trash shield.
