Remember in the X-Files how the government (or the aliens or somebody--I forget) was performing secret experiments on people?
In real life, I've come to realize that whatever "they" are doing to us is nothing compared to the expermients we perform on ourselves. These students are conducting large-scale uncontrolled experiments into the long-term effects of these drugs. No one will compensate them for any damaging side-effects they find. No one has the power to force them to accept this deal, but that's not necessary because they are performing these tests willingly.
What's with the media backlash on products that aren't even out yet?
Negative stories on Microsoft Windows Vista and the Playstation 3, which aren't even in final form and have only been tried by a limited number of people.
By the way, I've heard X-Men 4 is having script problems, and 2009 Fords are *weak*!
Our management wanted an "intranet" a few years back but had zero budget. My answer was JSPWiki on a Linux box.
The wiki has succeeded in a couple of notable areas. The photo directory page is critical for learning new faces on a rapidly growing staff. Another page has completely replaced sticky-notes that were formerly used to coordinate certain tasks among staff and interns. The IT department has a lot of miscellaneous documentation pages. A few other pages serve the function of an electronic bulletin board for staff scattered across two buildings.
Management was very concerned at first that staff would abuse the wiki, either by wasting time posting trivia or by outright vandalism. Neither fear has materialized.
The biggest failure of the wiki is the number of abandoned pages. They don't do any harm, but about a third of pages are derelict, with old information that the author obviously lost interest in maintaining. Having a wiki editor might solve that problem, but in practice it doesn't rise to the level.
Business method patents would be more palatable if the term of protection weren't so long, especially when the web is involved. Seventeen-year legal monopolies just don't fit a twelve-year-old medium.
CentOS is on a rampage! They broke into my server too last week, soon after I (1) downloaded CentOS 4.3 ISOs via BitTorrent; (2) burned them to a stack of CD-Rs; (3) installed the CentOS "Server" configuration to my box; (4) rebooted; and (5) started the httpd service.
Prioritization implies de-prioritization, by definition. You must be allowed to ignore less important issues for a little while in order to concentrate on more important ones. Whether or not that's the case depends on your organization's culture.
Having the device switch modes on its own depending on rules that may or may not be obvious to users will be a problem. Technophobes already complain their phones are too complicated: this is step further away from a simple desk phone people have mastered.
I've seen headphones sprout in shared offices with too many people. The headphones allow workers to tune out their surroundings and also discourage others from interrupting that person, just like walls and closed doors.
Sometimes it's self-preservation on the part of the bureaucrats.
I've started insisting on emailed instructions and approvals from my boss and other internal clients, for protection when controversy erupts. Managers tell me we have a small, friendly company, but it doesn't feel that way when the CEO calls a meeting on five minutes notice, requiring the presence of everyone between him and me, to discuss something I did based only on someone's verbal approval.
No mention of Skype instant messaging in the article, either. As far as I know, Skype is not Jabber-compatible. I need Skype for various contacts nowadays, especially Europeans.
Do we have to go into space right now? Do I have time to go home and change?

I probably sound like a curmudgeon. So be it.

The ticket system could be policed by peer pressure, with a social stigma attached to filing unprofessional complaints.

What sneaks--they must be stopped!
Does this mean all those drug-sniffing dogs are out of work?
Here's a thought: eBay your TiVo and then go renew your library card.
I'm getting Vista Home Basic just for the the Basic interpreter.

I hope you can add -buggy to your query to filter out all the buggy code.

Should have used a full bottle of cooking oil, in order to build on this article:
Want a Cool and Quiet PC? Dunk it in Oil

I didn't even have time to fact-check this reply!
Any new angle on the issue is helpful. If there's a virus hindering people in their efforts to lose weight, then by all means identify and fight it.

That's 20 million screens!
And I'll bet 30 million lost styl-i by now...
Well, that's why it's categorized as "It's funny. Laugh."
