He's right about the AOL/DUN thing. Probably they've changed it since then, but we used to get computers into the CompUSSR I worked at with "AOL Dial Up Adapter" just wreaking havoc on the machine. That's pretty funny. Accuse Scott McCloud of not being informative, and back it up with a PA cartoon.

Scott is wrong (and right) about a lot when it comes to the future of online comics, but in the case of the "Seduction of the Innocent" thing, he's exactly right in how it went down. Congress isn't going to fuck around when it comes to things like this, and even though they may be doing it for all the wrong reasons, that doesn't change the fact that something will likely be done. The video games industry and the ESBR needs to get their shit together and quick, before Congress blows the whole industry out of the water.

The bottom line is that somebody at Rockstar needs to have their ass handed to them for this, and in a very public manner. When Congressional committees start using phrases like "peddle sexually explicit material to our youth" the shit is about ready to hit the fan.

Dear Universities, Think Tanks, Consulting Agencies, and all other interested parties:

I would like to apply for the job of "Guy that pulls numbers out of his ass". I feel that my ability to pull numbers out of my ass qualifies me as an excellent candidate for this position. To demonstrate, please allow me to give some examples:

    $4.3 Billion
    $350k per year
$20.34 for every person in the United States

Please note how I was effortlessly able to adjust the meanings of the ass-pulled numbers by adding descriptive phrases, while still distancing the numbers from any real facts or statistics. I realize that it takes more than pulling numbers out of my ass to succeed in todays competitive white paper/consulting/propoganda market, and feel that I can be a great benefit to your company.

How dare you not recognize the legitimate and in no way phony "existing business relationship". How do you expect Bruno's Mortgage and High Interest Loans to not communicate with you, their (possible, potential, maybe if they're drunk when we call, three times removed) customer?

Using the same analogy, though, you don't necessarily want your burglar alarm calling the cops every time someone tries to open a door on your house that you know is locked, or looks in a window.

All too often I look back at month old logs and see "hey, that's cool, somone was trying to hack us"

This is why you need to review your logs on a daily basis, or at the very least keep a monitoring program of some kind open that you check once in a while throughout the day. Ideally you've got someone who's entire job this is, but unless you're business is of sufficient size this isn't really feasible or necessary. Automatic monitoring/notification is nice, but shouldn't be relied on totally.
