If someone told me to make the check payable to Myron Tereshchuk, I would immediately suspect an enemy of Myron Tereshchuk. Turns out they had other evidence though.

  10. Misleading on Manufacturing 1 PC Takes 1.8 Tons Of Raw Material · · Score: 3, Informative

That first paragraph is a little misleading. The author makes it sound like the material cost to produce a PC is the same as it is to build a car. He's actually comparing the raw materials needed for a PC to the final weight of a car. Confused me for a while.

  14. One Rule For 90% of Bugs on Debugging · · Score: 5, Informative

    4. Divide and conquer: Narrow the search with successive approximation, get the range, determine which side of the bug you're on, use easy-to-spot test patterns, start with the bad, fix the bugs you know about, and fix the noise first.

That's a very usueful rule. In nearly 20 years of programming I haven't found any tool or technique that works better than printf / std::cout / MessageBox and logging.

Logging is especially important if your users aren't conveniently in the same building as you. When a customer has a problem I've never seen before, I usually tell them to run the program with the -log switch and send me the log. Nearly always this leads to the problem and I can fix the bug within minutes.

Add logging to your app and you'll increase the number of hours you can sleep.

  15. It's all in how you say it on Working Around Bad Luck on the Resume? · · Score: 3, Funny

A year ago I was laid off from my job after 2 1/2 years, shortly after the product I was working on shipped.

Took a sabbatical after successfully shipping the product.

Later that year, a company moved me 1500 miles from Texas to California, to start working on a promising project, just to have the plug pulled by the corporation that funded it five weeks later, which resulted in another layoff.

Helped guide a failed project to a close with minimal loss to the company.

Now, there's a period of job seeking followed by a five week period of employment, followed by the current job seeking period on my resume.

Took time to improve skills and consider various job opportunities.
