Tape measures are the real problem. I must have a dozen, yet finding one when I need it is always an issue. Phillips screwdrivers too. And utility knives. One time I spent most of an afternoon looking for one. Ended up only getting part of a wall sheet-rocked. Fortunately the customer was a 'software engineer' and understood completely how I could look so busy without getting much done.

More effort was put into the early writing, and results ensued.

Actually...the tides caused by the moon occur both in the water and the land (to a lesser extent) and do contribute to the energy (heat) and motion of the ground. This could, in principle, happen in such a way to act as a trigger as a fault teeters on the edge of movement. It could also act to enable small slippages, and relieve stresses before catastrophic events occur.

So don't be absolutely, categorically sure about something so complicated and interrelated. Even if you might, possibly, but not certainly, correct.

  24. Re:Well.... on Legacy From the 1800s Leaves Tokyo In the Dark · · Score: 2

Magic to you perhaps. To those who actually know anything about the subject, transformers take an AC source at a certain voltage and current, and generate an output of a different voltage and current AT THE SAME FREQUENCY.

There may be phase shifts, and there are always energy losses, but the frequency stays the same.

Most AC motors are frequency locked to the power source, hence will operate at different RPM at 50 Hz than at 60 Hz. If that is an issue in the application, then a motor change would be required. Many TVs were also locked to the power signal - PAL vs NTSC.

  25. Re:Well.... on Legacy From the 1800s Leaves Tokyo In the Dark · · Score: 1

Can you actually cite some sources on this? Transformers are all about voltage changing. It is not immediately clear that the difference between 50hz and 60hz would affect them all that much.

I would guess that the larger problem would be with motors and other devices that rely on the power frequency to determine their performance characteristics.
