  1. Can't and won't happen on Give Mac Explorer to the People? · · Score: 2, Informative

This can't and will never happen. Internet Explorer, until 5.5 was mostly written in C++ with MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class Library). With MFC you could, in theory, write your code on one platform and run it on almost any platform. If they release the Mac version to the public Microsoft would release at least half, if not more, of its IE source (even from current development branches.)

A lot of that technology is either licensed from other sources, regional and is under local governmental control, or is closed source because it is under court order because of past law suits. In other words much of Internet Explorer isn't a Microsoft product; it would a nightmare for Microsoft to make it such.

  2. Where have all the good guys gone? on Departure Of The Java Hyper-Enthusiasts? · · Score: 1

"Has the previous hype of Java and J2EE moved on to Ruby (on Rails) and Python?" Some of the people who have to be on the bleeding edge are at Ruby. It does a lot of stuff with minimal programming. Python has very solid segment, but its still and outsider, kinda like PERL. The rest of the coders are either at .NET or PHP. PHP is a great web language which is starting come out with some really solid desktop platforms (PHP/GTK comes to mind.) .NET does everything, web, server, and desktop and it keeps expanding every couple of years.

I personally prefer PHP. It flexible and is great for my personal project. But when I can write something in .NET in 5 minutes and have it execute on all the platforms I running, I sometimes have to make a deal with the devil and go with Microsoft. My 2 anyway.

  3. Content Systems coming back on ISPs Race to Create Two-Tiered Internet · · Score: 1

I knew this was going to going happen eventually. The internet will be split into three tiers eventually:

    * Standard/Free Class: Which is what most people, only with P2P port blocked. Think CB/Ham Radio in features
    * Premium Class: Everything will be wide open. Almost every service under the sun will be open to you, including VOIP and special content wrapped into a nice GUI ala AOL. Think G3 Cell Phone in features
    * Business Class: Premium Class with larger pipes and you don't have to use a GUI system, but the GUI system will be strongly encouraged. Think Satellite phones in features

A lot of people will move to the Premium Class because of the speed while a hard core group will make lean protocols that will run well on the 'Standard Class' pipes. This in the long run this will be a good thing because it will force someone to come up with a new 'killer app' which will either use the basic internet much better or create a whole new system outside the current internet.

Personally I see either a mesh network or a new cell phone base network as the next big thing in data communications. Completely bypass the current land line networks that we have now.

  10. Sounds like Dreamcast on Blu-Ray The Flavour of The Moment · · Score: 4, Interesting

What impact might this have on Microsoft's decision to use HD-DVD on the Xbox 360?

Anyone played a Dreamcast? It was Sega's last from gaming system. It has awesome graphics, sound, and a native modem with an optional network card. One of its main failing was the media. Sega bet on a GD-Drive. GD drives was a modified CD-ROM that could fit nearly a gig of data on a special CD format. GD-Drives had the advantage of being cheap to make (only a few pennies more then coventional CD-ROM's) and similar storage compacity to DVD's system.

So why do I bring this all up? The Dreamcast didn't fail because of the hardware. It failed because it didn't have a good library of title at the US launch. It Japan the Dreamcast sold great for years; and I believe a few RPG's and budget games are still being made for the Dreamcast.

If Microsoft truley wants to thier HD format they have to have critical mas to do it with. Microsoft needs at least 4 solid games the day of the launch and 20 games by Christmas*. Without that volume Xbox 360 will almost certainly fail.

    * The reason for the footnote is that Sega Saturn had 4 poorly designed games at launch and 10 titles before Christmas and failed.
Sony Playstation has 4 good (for the time) games at launch and within 30 days had 20 games. About 5 to 10 games kept coming a week for a very long time after the original thirty day period.

    Elysium in Neopaganism
Many Neopagans today, particularly Hellenistic neopagans in the United States, have what most would consider a new-age view of Elysium. Elysium is seen as a multi-layered paradise, or Heaven, to many modern neopagans. Some believe that the outer layer of Elysium is composed of great and beautiful fields, often envisioned in imaginative descriptions as having green glowing blades of grass and bubbling springs of glowing water and wine, often made from the nectar of Ambrosia. Beyond the fields of Elysium, reserved only for the most righteous and virtuous, is the Golden City where spirits exist in a state of constant euphoria. Whether or not such beliefs are based in actual mythology often seems rather unimportant to many neopagans. Most claim that old myths are simply mortal accounts and interpretations of the divine, but the same could be argued about any current beliefs regarding Elysium. Much of what many modern neopagans believe today regarding Elysium seems to be borrowed from popular Christian imagery of Heaven.

Most printed sources can last for centuries in proper condition (see Dead Sea Scrolls). Compatible optical scanners are manufactured on a daily basis and the software to access these resources are freely available in most areas of the world.
