  1. Having a disability doesnt mean they're honest... on Social Engineering in the Workplace · · Score: 4, Interesting

I worked at a finacial institution, with doors that can only be opened with swipe cards, these were on each floor.

We were visited by a deaf woman (we assumed she was deaf from her speech, and her hearing aides, we learnt from the police that she was really deaf and was wanted in connection with other thefts) who was only just barely communicating that she was selling raffle tickets in something, no one knew sign language but let her in anyway assuming someone had let her in the building.

She used the time during lunch when most people werent at their desks to take wallets, go through draws or whatever, for some reason i was having lunch there, being the cheap bastard I am, I didnt buy a ticket, but my co-worker did.

For some reason I stood up to look at the woman operating from the otherside of the room, she looked a bit strange, she looked back so i sat back down. We found out later that she had her run of about 3 or 4 floors before someone challenged her being there.

It was also a running joke for us asking the co-worker who bought a ticket if she had won anything yet...

  8. Hrmm on Industry Threatened by Innovation at the 'Edge'? · · Score: 4, Interesting

When new technologies appear and make things more convinent, someone who was making money off the older technology loses out. Some companies want to simply protect their revenue without either pre-empting the change in technology or changing after a new technology has been adopted by the mainstream.

If VoIP became mainstream, how many telephone companies would go bankrupt? how many would fight tooth and nail to implement measures that would ensure that they got a piece of the pie?

As a big fan of the series, I'm interested how they're going to deal with the story line that is more suited to a series e.g. the many angels/sentinals/apostles (what have you)

  17. Hrmm on World Of Warcraft Alpha Explored, Blizzard Quizzed · · Score: 1

I wonder if this will be the same as everquest, fondly referred to as "evercrack" because of its addictive nature.

I can see this most likely is, I've even had some interest in this game and I know the evils that everquest hides... like the whole unwashing and staying up for 24 hrs or longer to get an item.

Do these things come with a warning about the addictiveness?

  18. Culture of blame and misinformation on GTA Violence, the Media, and the Gamers · · Score: 4, Insightful

Basically the whole argument that bad behaviour stems from playing video games is just insane as the people who believe it. If the argument is that people reflect what they see in the video game and believe its also acceptable in real life then why arent thousands of kids out being like mario eating mushrooms and stealing coins?

And a small history lesson... there were badly behaved people before video games were even thought of! *gasp*

If people who are against videogame violence were to be believed then the first murder happened shortly after space invaders came out. Gang rapes started happening after pacman, and paperboy bought on genocidal tendencies.

The blame of any kids that do bad things should be squarely on the parents instead of trying to find someone else for their own failings. If i did something wrong, I got smacked for it and I learnt not to do it again.

If anything they should censor the news or clean it up, how many murders with gruesome details to they report on each day?
