More old thinking. The history of Halo is well documented by now. You make it seem like Halo was already done before Microsoft. That mythology (spread by those still angry that MS bought Bungie) is just that, a myth.
Yours is old thinking. The Xbox & Live shows what Microsoft is capable of. The first version of both Xbox & Live were both home-runs. To use your words "Xbox is good...damned good".
The iRiver 120 can record using its built in mono mic or through its stereo mic/line input (Analog & Digital). They even supply a nice little external mono mic for you.
I would say iRiver is about 75% there. Hopefully they can address all the recording shortcomings through firmware upgrades.
- No input level metering -.WAV recording time limited - Rare glitches but even one is too much
If they address the three issues above than you have yourself a pro-level portable recording device.
"seeing as how I use OS X, I have yet to experience downtime or hassles due to viruses or worms"
Twisted uninformed logic that could only come from a partisan. Lets have OS X (or any other OS) occupy 98% market share and we'll see how much attention it gets from virus authors.
Background: I'm 34, make my living in creative tech, been addicted video games since Asteriods.
Simply put, after Xbox Live, there is no going back. Everynight, I get to play with the best players in the game regardless of where they are. I'm in Los Angeles, they could be in Miami or even the UK. But in reality, it makes no difference. They might as well be sitting right next to me. Their player is right there on my widescreen, in my living room! We're competing in real time with no lag and no cheats. We're sharing stories, having a laugh or maybe cussing each other out.
It's a revolution in gaming and there's no turning back.
P.S. Xbox Live will someday get its due. Partisan Slashdotters will never praise it and PS2 gamers shun it for a variety of reasons most of them having little to do with gaming itself.
"the XBox isn't 2nd rate, but it's content certainly is"
Here I must beg to differ. You can argue that the Xbox lacks the quantity of content of its competitors but the quality of the games it does have are top notch. The list is long and I've leave it up to others to point them out.
Also, lets not forget Xbox Live. Nothing on the other consoles comes even close to it. Not even close.
Please. Your second statement applies just as well to Apple.
"iTunes should abandon that proprietary audio/video format they are clinging to and just go along with what the consumers have picked to be the defacto standard."
Your post is "insightfull" for a number of reasons but mostly it's a testament to the power of Apple marketing.
You say "Microsoft is so second rate". I recall seeing plenty of similar posts when the Xbox was announced. Most of a postings on Slashdot were about as wrong as it gets then and, I suspect, will be just as wrong now.
Like the comic book guy in the Simpsons says: "Worst Episode Ever!".
The jokes on you dude. The guy in the Halo video was making fun of whiners like you who can't stand the fact that one of the best FPS games ever was released on the Xbox and went on to achieve huge success.
The simple fact is that if they released the exact same game for the PC or the Mac or playstation or the Gamecube than you'd be singing its praises.
Halo2 is out later this year? Maybe I'll see you online.
Ahh! Slashdot at it's best. A refuge for those poor lost souls whose self-esteem and identity are affirmed and defined by the failure or success of a particular technology.
Exactly how would the failure of Xbox2 benefit you? Thousands of readers are curious.
I just got a SA 8000. We were looking into a Tivo but the price was too high. For $5/month I could get a SA8000 that has greater capabilities than a regular Tivo.
I've never had a Tivo so I can't compare the two. I do know that the 8000 has worked great so far.
UI: It integrates smoothly with the channel guide UI that we had before. In fact, I can barely tell the difference.
Ease of Use: My wife learned to use on her own!
Stability: It did crash while I was watching a recorded program, but it kept right on recording the second scheduled recording (it has two tuners).
Impact: Its great. I now know what Tivo users are raving about.
More notes: - The channels do not take "10-20 seconds" to change. Thats nonsense. There is a delay measured in the milliseconds. - It has recorded all scheduled programs with no errors. - I can take it back to Charter at any time and get my old box back with no costs. - There will be a HD version coming out in the next few months. - The price can't be beat. - Much like Mac-heads. You can already see a cult of Tivo devolping. It's interesting to watch develop.
Interesting post. You have in a way confirmed what must have been Microsofts original game-plan: Make a super-charged pure gaming-machine and the gamers will follow.
I don't own a PS2 or a GC but I can't imagine being without my Xbox. And my reasons?
1) Xbox Live (truly amazing) 2) Best graphics/sound 3) HDTV/5.1 with 16x9 (Halo2 will support 16x9 1080i) 4) Ripping CD's for jukebox & music during games 5) High quality exculsive games
If your a gamer but your staying away from Xbox because of your anti-MS politics than your not really a gamer.

I can't wait to see what Microsoft has to offer.
Xbox & Xbox Live.
It's fun to go check out the Slashdot posts when Xbox and Live was announced. They were about as wrong as it gets.
You should check out blogs.msdn.com if your interested in stuff like this.
Especially interesting is Chris Pratley's web log. He's got some great posts on the history of Word, the Open Source movement and other fun stuff.
Nicely put. Xbox Live players know that there's no going back.
It's amazing that everynight I get to play against the best players in the world while lounging on my sofa.
Well, Mr. ballmer, I too work for a corporation and our 8 production servers all run linux because windows isn't up the task.
LOL. Thanks for the laugh.
It's a myth
The Passion pretty much did well because somebody finally managed to get a snuff film into the theaters.
Great insight. I would mod you up if I could.
Howdy, Recording Engineer here.

While your sentiment is understandable and I'm sympathetic, you speak as if there is a alternative. There is not.
Great post. Slashdot at its best.
Well thought out except for a few points.
(1) post makes no of mention Linux or OSS
(2) OS X is closed source.

_
90? Closer to 98% probably.
But really, they did a fantastic job with the control of the xbox version.
What you say is blashphemy here on Slashdot. But your right.
You have no idea what your missing.

Microsoft did Xbox Live right out of the gate.
Probably one of the best web sites I've seen. A real testament to the power of the Internet.

Here's hoping they fail spectacularly

I Agree. I love my Xbox. I love Xbox Live even more.
If I can get a Xbox2 cheaper because it doesnt have backward compatability, than even better. It's a trade-off I'll take anyday.
If someone has a stack of xbox games, than they have a Xbox. It then becomes a issue of convenience.
