Actually, from reading on his site, he does have a girlfriend, plus a six-figure salary as a lawyer. But he might give it all up, move from New York to California, and take a sixth of the pay to be a Lego Master Builder.
That's dedication.
Here is the article that he talks of his dreams of Lego.
Anyone else notice lots of the posts are about cellphones, telcos, and releated technology. I tell you Wireless Telco's are going to be the large ISP's of the future...
Yep. That's right. I'm reading slashdot on my tablet off of a wireless cel modem right now. In a sports bar.
One of the most creative types of advertising I found was the series of BMW short films with Clive Owens, called The Hire, found here. Just watching them makes me want to get a BMW. (Not that I can afford one, of course.) Most, if not all of them are done by fairly high profile directors and actors.
It's a new advertising model. I downloaded them, and I'll show them to people every once in a while. They get me to advertise for them.
I think that if those 1000 zombies are all running at 100% CPU utilization just to send the spammer's email, the machines will get their OS (likely Microsoft) wiped far more often. Maybe that will help Joe and Jane Sixpack learn a little about keeping their computers updated with patches.
I work for a mid-size school district. I found many of these problems in front of me when I started, but then I orchestrated the removal of my boss and took his job. Now I am the head of IT and I am somewhat of an ambassador of technology to the administration. Things are going well now.
It's a political game. You gotta play it to get ahead or get things changed.
(It really wasn't as bad as it sounds. I'm not a bad person, I don't think.)
As a game developer, and an out-of-work one at that, Windows does need to be reinstalled every 6 months or so... If the constant flow of test games doesn't get you, the constant flow of uninstallers will. Rolling back to restore points is useful, but A: it doesn't always work and B: it doesn't address the cumulative damage of accrued extensions.
Give me a break. If you're doing software testing you should be doing it on a virtual machine like VMWare, not a machine where the state keeps changing because of software uninstalls. That's just sloppy. A copy of VMWare workstation isn't going to break anyone. And if you *really* need to have a real machine, use Ghost to image it and bring it back to a clean state. The cost of either these programs will pay off in the future since you'll be saving time by not reinstalling Windows all the time.
If ditching a wayward sheep is the Christian thing to do...
Everything I have learned from being a Christian says that *that* is not right. Just as extreme Islamic fanatics give Islam a bad rap, so too do those Christian zealots leave people turned off to being a Christian. Being a Christian (in my mind) is not about Bible-thumping and converting others, it's a way of living your life.
Only a snake would slither away and try to alienate his friends.
How appropriate. In the Bible the snake represents Satan.
The working 14 hours a day on a programming project is unsustainable. Especially if you're working with people who have a life. It can work for small teams of young programmers for a "while". Especially if they are inspired.
I think this can be extended to almost any job.
I'm a sysadmin by trade, and we crammed implementing an enterprise firewall (yeah, I know), NAT conversion, connecting sites with fiber, constructing a datacenter and finishing a Windows 2000 conversion into two months. The younger (salaried) people on my team consistently put in 80 hour or more weeks. The older people always checked out after 8 hours every day. That was stressful, I can't imagine doing 120 hours a week.
Since this is outside the scope of the DMCA, any modded equipment would be in violation of FCC regulations.
Feh.
How are they even going to know? The modded device won't be broadcasting anything. Current laws say you can do whatever the hell you want to your property; it isn't the manufacturer's anymore once you buy it. (Notice I said current laws.) I'll learn how to mod all sorts of this hardware once it comes out. Come and fucking get me FCC.
Well, as you will have noticed if you`ve ever employed sarcasm near an American, they just don't get it!
I think sarcasm has more to do with the tone of your voice than anything else. We had a woman from Finland that came to work at my organization for a while, and sarcasm was lost on her too. Even if everybody speaks English (or any other language) fluently, differing accents coming from your nation of origin could mask the subtle tone of your voice and make it difficult to discern sarcasm. My opinion anyway. I'm probably wrong.:p
If Microsoft was gone tomorrow, there would be hardship, but not as much as most people think.
As all of their contracts are nullified, thousands of businesses to provide "support" for Microsoft products would spring up.
IT departments would then take a long, hard look at the other options offered to them. Novell? UNIX? Linux? Apple?
It isn't like the only option is Microsoft. Yeah, it would be bad for consumers, but it isn't like people will stop writing software for an OS with such a huge installed base. For home users, I think Apple would see a *huge* increase in sales on new systems.
Where I work, at a school district, we are all PC, all Microsoft. But if they went away, we would likely switch to Apple. (Sorry Dell) Or maybe Linux if the time was right. (Better for Dell)
An interesting, if unlikely, situation. I don't really think Microsoft is going to go away anytime soon. I think it will be a slow, gradual switch to Linux as more corporate desktops start switching to Linux.
I have no clue if China has these things above the USA (or Europe and let's not forget Russia), but for all I am concerned, countries should have the right to get those things out of the sky when they get a shot at it.
I asked a buddy of mine in the military if we knew if there were any foreign countries that had spy satellites over us. His response was that they are told to keep some types documents and papers, when outside, in a briefcase or otherwise enclosed, to keep them from possibly being seen by potential satellites.
I asked him why we don't just shoot them down somehow, and he replied, "What, and give them an excuse to bring down ours?"
I have a feeling that the government could care less if foreign counties spy on the citizens of the US, as long as the government activities are secure.
The reason they do that is to get money from the government. The school district I work for needs to have a CIPA approved web filter installed in order to get e-rate money. Tripod is likely blocked for sex/porn because some tool probably put some porn up on it on his/her page, but the web filter saw it before the content got pulled.
We don't have any NT servers anymore. We're 2000, but since I'm the sysadmin I'm working on Linux. Helps when you bring up to the teachers' union that Linux could save money so we could pay teachers more. Vive le resitance!
Dell's server hardware is great, even better than Apple's workstation/server hardware.
I agree. We use Dell servers in our NOC where I work, and I've been nothing but pleased with it. As you said, too, they probably come with Gold Support. 4 Hour response + parts and labor is great.
I saw Kill Bill. The movie sucks so much ass that I almost left. Thank God I didn't pay full price since I went to a matinee. I could have done without all the squirting and the spraying. I don't mind violence, but this had no direction; no purpose. It reminded me of a badly done live action anime.
Half the people in the theater I was in left before we even got halfway through. I've enjoyed other Tarantino films in the past, but this one was pure, unadulterated shit.
I was going to post as an AC, but no, I will be heard. Moderators: This post is offtopic, and should be moderated as such.
Imagine 30 1st graders with laptops and 1 teacher. Or, imagine a beowulf cluster of broken laptops with snot on them, it's the same thing.
Indeed. My employer, a school district, just bought wireless labs for students. Already we've had a dozen in for repair that have been dropped/broken or otherwise destroyed.
We had someone come out from a temp agency, but they had a section specializing in tech support. We needed another person to help with projects for a while. Info: I work for a public school district.
He was a moron. Idiot. Slacker.
I don't understand why he was even in the tech field in the first place. Sure, he knew how to install software, but I had to show how to browse a Windows network! He was the equivalent of an end user! Ack! He had very little knowledge, couldn't improvise, and only showed up half the time.
When we interviewed (and hired) somebody else for the position he wanted to fill, he was disappointed. Wanting to somewhat save his damaged pride, I said, "Yeah, the person we hired for the job had a Master's Degree."
To which he replied, "If I had a Master's Degree I'd just go in and ask to buy the school."
As if they roll up a million dollar bill with your Master's. As if one could simply buy a public school.
It was the stupidest thing I had ever heard, but I only said, "Yeah, the tech sector is kinda tight right now."
Actually, from reading on his site, he does have a girlfriend, plus a six-figure salary as a lawyer. But he might give it all up, move from New York to California, and take a sixth of the pay to be a Lego Master Builder.

Or you get an FBI car a new paint job. Instant bulletproof car.
Everyone on Slashdot gets laid.

Heh. This is no NOC. This is for people that want to feel important in a dead-end job. The workstation I use in mine cost over twice this.
I can hear the "investors" and "customers" now.
"What? An 8'x10' room? And CRT monitors? Why don't you have triple LCD panels?"
So make your own system that's different. It a free market. I know that there could be a high cost of entry, but anyone could make a better product.
It's a political game. You gotta play it to get ahead or get things changed.

I've always considered my skills with computers to be the Art. People tell me what I'm able to do is like magic.
I think this can be extended to almost any job.

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Turn Off Autoplay
It can be set on just the cd-rom or on all drives.
You can set it easily on a local machine on Win2k/XP by running gpedit.msc as well.
Sorry, Dell. Sorry, Creative. And all the rest. You can't give me the value that Apple can right now.
"The Value of Trust" indeed.
