Yeah, that has happened to me, too. I have worked in jobs where you receive phone calls as well as talk to customers face to face, and I would always give walk-in customers priority over phone customers. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, I would even go so far as to not answer the phone at all. This didn't go over so well with management, but this would be reserved specifically for times where my hands were full, and it would be perceived as extraordinarily rude to drop whatever I was doing and go answer a phone. I only hope the customers realized how courteous I was being.
Novell does the same thing. It's not that surprising, businesses are used to paying per client. What I do like is that it only costs $1000 for unlimited clients. That seems pretty cheap. You have to buy Mac hardware though, so it makes sense that they don't charge as much for the OS.
I was about to post this exact same comment. It's true, there was once a time where you could expect to get a person's undivided attention. Now, for some magical reason the phone gets priority over the actual person who's there. I'm going to start telling people how rude they are... I don't think they realize it.
I'm not testing the theory, but from what my non-law trained mind figures, it's similar to buying a CD in Russia and bringing it back to the USA. But honestly, I don't know if the USA honors the Russian laws. I mean, I'm in the USA when I do the download, the law might not cover me. I think this is a fine time to remember "caveat emptor" or "buyer beware."
You find it hard to listen to the DKs because Jello cut in line at a hotel? Seriously now, wouldn't you try and do the same thing if you thought you were a VIP? There are A LOT bigger assholes than Jello in the music industry. I do agree with you about his speeches being very similar. I had the chance to go see him speak last year, but declined because I'd heard his recent CDs before, so I knew the material. Also, to be honest, it doesn't sound particularly entertaining to hear a guy talk about politics for a few hours. I could watch C-Span for that. Henry Rollins was good though. He was actually really funny.
Hell yeah, Construx! I think I used to play with those more than I did with Legos. My brother and I used to share a room, and we'd of course have Construx all over the floor. Those connectors were pretty painful to step on. We'd also throw the glow-in-the-dark pieces around the room from our beds. Man, those rocked.

That's cool, I hadn't heard of these before. I did a Google search and found a link. $20 for the regular 110dB Screaming Meanie, and $30 for the 120dB bad boy. I like the idea of how you set how long you want to sleep, instead of when you want to get up.
I wouldn't call it a turnaround in opinion, just another facet of the "Slashdot hive-mind" that you didn't notice before. It's not like people on Slashdot were cheering before when their jobs were just starting to go to India. Open-source is totally different than international outsourcing.
funny how grand theft auto is really nothing but an interactive version of Scarface (which Vice City makes nearly a literal translation) -- yet scorcese is a visionary while the video game needs to be banned. cute hypocracy.
Scorsese didn't have anything to do with Scarface. It was directed by Brian DePalma. Screenplay by Oliver Stone, et al. I agree with your point though, there ought to be a market for adult video games. I heard the other day that the average age for video game players is around 28. Wow.
Same here, it was ridiculous. Part of the charm of EMusic was that you could read about this weird music that sounded cool, download the album, and if it sucked, so what. With quotas, there's no incentive to do that. And getting rid of the message boards was just a pussy move. Notice how they never responded to all the people who had problems with their download managers either? I never once received support from them, on the boards or via their automated bullshit e-mail setup. Fuck them. I miss their service, I used to proselytize for them all the time, but no longer.
Too bad they have absolutely no bands I've ever heard of. Well, that's not true, they have one regional band that sucks called Humans Being. But honestly, I'm more interested in buying CDs that I want, not browsing around for a while on cdbaby.com then buying a CD. I shop with a specific CD in mind to purchase, and odds are, cdbaby.com won't have it. And I listen to a lot of bands that are on independent labels. Cdbaby.com isn't even a competitor, just a rallying point for people who're boycotting the RIAA. If I was an unsigned musician, or a "local" musician, I'd love that I could sell my CDs through them, but you can be sure I'd dump them in an instant to sign with Touch & Go, Kill Rock Stars, Matador, etc., and I'm sure most of the bands on cdbaby.com would do the exact same thing. That's the problem, these bands aren't good enough to get signed, so they are stuck on a non-label. Feel free to flame away, but that's how it is.
There are definitely guitar geeks. They're the guys like Sonic Youth, who spend a lot of time screwing around with their pickups, amps, etc. to get the perfect tone. Gearheads.
Since when are Mac OS X users assumed to be more technical? You don't need to know shit about computers to use OS X. Sure, you CAN do some pretty technical stuff with it, but your average college student is going to be writing papers and, if they're art students, doing some Photoshop or using some other specialized programs. They're not going to be any more technically inclined than their Windows-using classmates. OS X is as easy to use (in my opinion) as the previous Mac OSes were. There's just a lot more going on behind the scenes in OS X.

I think you missed his point. He understands the $12.99. His problem is with paying $50 for the game at the store.

30 more minutes people, get ready...
SOTU drinking game

Who wants some WANG?!
Yeah, that game was pretty damned near as good as Duke 3D.

Wow, I had that problem for at least a year and a half at work. Never did figure out what was causing it. Thanks.
Why not worry about BOTH? If you have a good story to submit, why don't you do that? Apparently the Boston Globe thought this story was important.
Ah man, that's funny. Thanks. Most +5 Funny stuff on /. doesn't even make me crack a smile. That was great.

He's joking, it's perfectly legal.
Problem is, this was voted on verbally, with no record of who voted on it. So that idea's gone out the window. Better to just vote all incumbents out.

Agreed. That's what I have, and it has been perfect. Lots of space to put extra stuff, and is well-padded.

Actually, it'd be $20,300 because the best story gets $500. But your point's valid, I'm just being a dick.
You know, I disabled signatures so I WOUULDN'T see your pathetic self-shilling advertisements. Do us a favor and leave them where they belong.
