This is what I thought too. I mean - Logitech - king of the computer mouse.

I know there would be some serious engineering problems to make the mechanics small enough to track even the bluntest ball-point pen and also to deal with the ink that would be covering it, but surely they could come up with something to do it this way.

There's no chance I'd buy this product as is, but if they implemented it by tracking the roller so it wouldn't need special paper then I'd be sold.

The Yopy is almost there. It's already a small device with good battery life, a keyboard and it runs Linux so you know the API is open. The only thing we're waiting for is wireless.

There's supposed to be a CDMA snap-on for it, (or possibly GSM) but nothing has been forthcoming yet. It will also be able to double as a cell phone when the add-on is released. It makes a great PDA / mini-pc right now at any rate.

This is EXACTLY what I just did when I chose to reinstall my system early this year. I installed Slack 8.0. Just the very basics. The kernel (which I upgraded to the latest immediately - I'm actually running 2.5.18 now - yes 2.5 :), the Clibs and gcc - little else. I installed the rest from source: X 4.2, QT, KDE, GTK, etc etc...

The result is a VERY stable and VERY usable system, despite my dabbling in the black arts^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hdevel kernels.

Slackware was my first distribution (and first Linux experience) - I flirted with Mandrake for a brief period, but it was nothing serious. I returned to my first love soon after and haven't looked back. We're very happy together :)

Sure, they can post MD5 sums on the website for people to verify them against, but I don't think that many people actually bother doing that. I imagine for safety, I'd probably download from a central server (web page/ftp site) even if such a P2P infrastructure were in place, simply for the fact that I can be reasonably assured that it hasn't been tampered with.

Additionally I would think it wouldn't be too long before miscreants started finding ways to share their warez on the network as well, giving it a bad name. Of course, we could continually fix the network against such uses, but they'd continually find ways into it. I'd much rather have the [kernel|KDE|gnome|etc.] developers working on their respective projects than on some peer to peer network.

I know the ftp sites can get fairly flooded, but I started getting KDE 3.0.1 from ftp.kde.org when I first saw the news this morning and got well over 100K/s here in Canada - doesn't seem so bad to me.

The KDE KHTML part is small, efficient and awesome. The Mozilla engine is big and cumbersome.

There are people on the KDE team that know the KHTML part inside out, to use Mozilla, they'd have to learn the internals of that if they wanted to make changes.

I say stay with KHTML. One of the goals of OSS is to allow choice. If you want to use Mozilla in KDE, use it. Or you can use the included one built on KHTML.
