  1. Reaction? on ReactOS Runs On The XBox · · Score: 3, Interesting

Yeah, I think ReactOS will make Microsoft "react" since it's a Windows clone. You are the weakest link, goodbye.

I love it how the geeks will uproar about MS taking measures to prevent their console from doing things that it shouldn't ... Of course if Apple circumvents (Real) ... it's their RIGHT!

The "Internet" has a hell of a lot more data than what the article stated. I don't know about you, the last time I checked, the Internet is a collective of Web Pages, Usenet, IRC, Sharing Networks, etc.

Hell, DC++ (Direct Connect Client/Server) has had more than 500 terrabytes of shared data in several of my favorite hubs.

All financial transactions done over the Internet use some form of data encryption, so someone sniffing in on the network would just get a bunch of garbage.

  14. Re:Well duh! on Real Feels iTunes Backlash · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am an Apple user myself. Do I wish there were more choices/cheaper alternatives to the Apple G4/G5 product line? A resounding YES.

I am an Apple user and I say I want more choices.

Granted, there are ways for people like me to get what they want at a cheaper price ... this is what I did:

G4 Dual 533/Studio Monitor was purchased at a computer auction for 200.00 ...
PC Geforce3 that had been flashed with a Mac ROM for 53.00
512 meg chip of 64X4 RAM (note: 64x8 does NOT work) 80.00

Total paid: 333.00 very reasonable IMO.

Another company offering an additional means of playing back music on an iPod should increase the VALUE of the iPod device, if nothing else.

Does this mean that my using a PC Geforce3 card flashed with an Apple ROM is spitting in Apple's face? I don't think so.

  15. All of this whining ..... on Real Feels iTunes Backlash · · Score: 4, Interesting

Ok, first of all, even if Real Rhapsody or Jukebox or whatever was available for the Mac platform, most Mac users probably wouldn't use it.

Now, who does this interoperability "improvement" benefit? Windows users of course. iTunes and iPods both work well with Windows. Real is simply undercutting the iTunes song prices. I really see nothing inherently wrong with offering a lower price, it benefits the consumer.

In my opinion, why not buy some albums you wouldn't ordinarily buy for 4.99? I am sure the whole reverse-engineering of DRM will be taken to court. May as well benefit from the lower prices while you can. I am sure Real's Rhapsody/Jukebox files sound just as good on your iPod at half the price.

Keeping a business like Apple alive simply by running a "music" store seems like a flawed way of operating a hardware/operating system business.

  16. I think the time doesn't fit the crime. on Blaster Variant Creator Pleads Guilty · · Score: 2, Insightful

Modifying a pre-existing "worm" .... big deal. It only affects a certain operating system -- the holes exploited were very well known, the creator himself did not intrude into anyone's system, the worm did. I say the government should pay 60,000.00+ (the cost of housing an inmate for 3 years) for antivirus/worm software for citizens. Big businesses should be PATCHED already, that's what the IT department is for!!

3+ years served because other people screwed up and didn't keep their systems secure, give me a break.

The worm of course should be sentenced to death with McAfee or the security patch that is made available by the loveable operating system maker.

  17. Really glad for this trend ..... on Fewer Computer Science Majors · · Score: 2, Insightful

I am glad that things are evening out and people are jumping ship. I am a Computer Science graduate, what separates me from most of the others is that I wanted to be involved in a computer industry since age 7. My dream back then was to design video games (I'm sure most of my fellow geeks went through a similar phase..)

I worked as a Computer Vision developer for 3 years during college, and more recently as a Database Monkey (current job.)

I think it takes a lot of love for the field to be able get through some of the more mundane days. The pay isn't that great either, but I really can't think of a job I'd rather be doing that doesn't involve a computer.

Choosing a career based on a market trend seems like a bad way to go about choosing a profession for life. It's like becoming a Brain Surgeon because the pay is "good".

  19. That's a horrible "warranty" .... on Kensington Laptop Locks Not So Secure · · Score: 4, Insightful

Just because the cable and the lock were not damaged does not mean that the lock and cable actually did the job correctly! Kensington should pay the warranty claim out since it was obviously ineffective in actually securing the device.

If you use this Kensington lock and your laptop gets jacked, use a pair of bolt cutters and damage your cable before filing your claim.
