  1. Why Congress? on Google Video Blasted Over Piracy Claims · · Score: 4, Insightful

Aren't there already laws protecting copyright? Is Congress really responsible for enforcement? This reminds me so much of a child running to mommy every time another kid takes their toy or calls them a name.

  2. Voice dialing on What Do You Want In iPhone 2.0? · · Score: 1, Informative

EVERY phone made today should come with this feature. Many states have or are soon going to have laws that require using a hands-free set to talk while driving (CA's takes effect July 2008). While the iPhone does work with bluetooth headsets, requiring a driver to take their eyes off the road in order to initiate a call is inexcusable. I personally will not be purchasing an iPhone (although I do want one!) until this feature is added.

The thing I can't believe is that they expect anyone to make any sort of investment as long as there are two formats. Too many of us remember being burned by VHS/Beta. That's one of the reasons CDs were such a huge hit--when the CD came out it was a tremendous improvement PLUS there was no format competition. I won't even consider either format until it is the only format. Until then, I could care less about the details.

  6. Document format on Adobe May Launch Office Rival · · Score: 2, Interesting

Personally, I'm not as concerned with the platform as I am with the document format. MS Office's proprietary binary formats are such a drag. If only they'd use some sort of "open document" format. You know, where the details of the format had been decided upon by a committee of experts, the implementation was human readable, and it wasn't owned by a single corporate entity. One where you wouldn't have to be worried about broken compatibility every time the app was revved, one where any other enterprising developer(s) could create a competing product without having to reverse engineer anything. What a nice world that would be. What are the odds?

  9. It's called supply and demand on CA Solar Use Falling Because of Economics · · Score: 1

During the day, especially during the summer months, demand goes way, way up. Supply is (for the most part) constant. Therefore, the market will bear higher costs during the day. It has nothing to do with the cost of producing the power.

Keep in mind, though, that most residential customers don't currently see this change--their rates are held constant, and they're billed based solely on their total monthly KWh usage. Only TOU customers (mostly C & I, or big users) fall into the changing rate category. Part of this is due to the fact that TOU meters are expensive, and replacing (using SCE as an example) 4,000,000 residential spinning disk meters with TOU meters at $200-1000 per unit is cost prohibitive. Of course, this is all going to change with the advent of AMI (Automated Metering Initiative).

Pressure from conservative Christian groups in the US, which has a veto over the internet addressing system, led the organisation last year to put off introducing a new ".xxx" domain for pornography on the internet.

This I don't understand. Can somebody help me out? Why wouldn't they want to keep all of the porn sites in one domain, where a very simple filter could eliminate all of it from view? I would think it would be the other way around--the porn companies should be against this as it would make filtering too easy. Do they refuse to admit that there is already tons of pornographic material on the internet, and if they ignore it, it will go away? Perhaps they think giving porn its own domain would legitimize it. Or do they think it will be ineffective if the porn distributors aren't required to use .xxx?
