At the same time, $10B is a lot of dough, no matter what you are comparing it to. The movie industry is "only" twice as big? Yeah, well, they have had over a hundred years to build that up. How long has it taken for the game industry to reach the halfway mark? At that rate, how long before it passes the $20B mark? It is impressive no matter how you look at it.
Just to put things into perspective, WalMart does about $250 billion in sales annually. That's a single company taking in 10X the annual revenue of two entire industries combined. Now that's impressive.
...doesn't mean there wasn't a problem. Anybody remember the Therac-25 radiation machine? After a few incidents it was examined and the first couple of times no fault was found. However, after much closer inspection they found that under just the right circumstances, if things were done in just the right order, bad things would happen. And this is a Renault we're talking about.
People are *better* able to feed themselves with traditional farming
This doesn't scale. Remember the industrial revolution? Took place because of mechanization and automation in the farming industry, thereby freeing people from the task of feeding themselves and allowing them to work on other things--like building SpaceShipOne. Think Burt would have had the time to draw up the blueprints if he'd been spending his time plowing his field behind an ox? Sure it takes more energy to farm running a combine, but it only takes a couple of people to work an enormous field, feeding not only themselves but a good sized town as well. There's more to efficiency than just caloric input.
Here's a review of the original 1Ds from luminous-landscape. To sum it up (it's rather lengthy), the author favorably compares the 1Ds to medium format film.
At >$5,000 for a 40" LCD TV, exactly what market impact were they expecting? There are not too many folks out there with that kind of disposable income. I'd love to have a large, widescreen LCD TV, but I'm waiting for a good quality 42" model for $3,000. If another technology wins out because the LCD TVs can't find the right price/performance ratio, that's fine. It doesn't change the amount I have to spend on toys.
RIAA exec: Hey there Mr. Trump! We've got this great idea for raising revenue in our floundering industry. This "online music retail store" thing really seems to be catching on, so we thought it'd be a good time to double the prices for singles and charge $17 for a compressed version of a complete album. What do you think?
The Donald: How fucking stupid are you? YOU'RE FIRED!
Don't doctors carry pagers? Wouldn't it make more sense since pagers have better coverage than cell phones? The doctor in question would get his silent page, quietly check the message, then go out to the lobby to call in.
Is Real their own problem?

Real Problems

· Score: 5, Insightful
You besides having one of the most annoying install processes in the history of computers, hijacking functions the user had no intention of having Real handle, shoving registration down your throat with tons of opt-outs rather than opt-ins, having obtrusive background programs running even when you tell them not to...
I think not being able to find the download link was the best part about it.
Kevin Nealon was way ahead of the author (your place or mine?). I mean, he was doing that persuasive thing (watch Saturday Night Live) for years, and I'm sure he (Kevin Nealon is God) didn't have to read a book to figure it out.
The F-1 engine used in the first stage of the Saturn V used kerosene as the fuel, but it also used liquid oxygen as the oxidizer. The J-2 engines used in the second and third stages used liquid hydrogen + liquid oxygen.
I think he's the drummer for Metallica.
Does it have pictures?
Here's some info.
Twice, even.
Too bad we can't mod "+1, WTF"
Because if the average geek tried to be the next Batman, they'd end up more like this guy.
sorry...
I hereby demand a battle royale to the death between the homebrewed robot exoskelton and this guy.

Don't hit the ground so hard.

Of course, I still think it was user error...

I found the ending to the weblog rather unsatisfying. Thanks for the original (and the ending!).

Although it pains me to defend the bitch, her use of esquire is appropriate. See here.
And maybe even Uranus!!
What? He wasn't talking about weapons of ass destruction?
I don't even know her!
Thanks, I'm here all week.
