I first joined EE when it was a normal question/answer site I didn't even know they'd gone paywalled unti i tried to log in 10 years later or so (last year i think...
At the time i needed something better (*anything* actually ) than Computing net. i actually needed answers..
Oh and PPS to the previous poster.. mine really DOES go up to 11.. It came from Jim Marshall's shop that way.. for real!
Well, I *Disagree* using quantity alone as any indicator iof value is tantamount to St peter at the pearly gates allowing Hitler in, because he only had one sin on the books (even if it was slaughtering 3 million) and refusing the poor old sod with 300 , even though each 'sin' was refusing to go to church on sundays for 10 years.
So there..
Quantity by itself is Meaningless!
THank you for a totally reasonable,interpretation.. I find it VERY disturbing that so many slashdotters, most of whom are probably programers themselves, don't see the inherent danger in allowing this kind of poor and monopolistic behavior..
Perhaps because I live in an over-regulated, monopolistic, competitively crippled country, that i'm sensitized to the issues.. haven experienced firsthand the damage..
But folks better wake up and realize that crippling a developers account for what amount to no more than sour grapes is a BAD thing...
DONT take the 'Devils' side in this!
"and I certainly do look up porn sites"..
WEll.. i don't..anymore.. i'm just to old to be able to take any mo teasing;-(.. but I AM really curious if OPEN DNS really IS all that.. i don't trust my ISP's server either.. i've already seen what appear to be politically or, perhaps financially motivated blocks (i.e. 404s that are mysteriously accessible via modem).
I live in (supposedly free and democratic) Canada..
Food 4 Thought , it has been on/. today...
OK all of you.. lets face it.. if the gov'ts of the day applied for permission to inspect, and block, if it wanted, every citizen's internet communication..they'd never get away with it... But apply for permission to di it 'to catch perverts' , and lets face it, who would *DARE* oppose snooping on and blocking diddlers.
Now, with the approval of the masses yelling "protect us from the great unwashed hordes".. thy have what they want.
It may even, in fact, catch a few pervs too, as a bonus.
This trick is the oldest one in the book and people STILL fall for it...
Freedoms arent taken away by rifles, but by sickly promises and quiet whisperings of 'the bogeyman will get you'..a student of history..
Me too.. and surprisingly, you're the only person that mentioned this. I would have, but no need to do so now.The science behind this is solid, based on basic thermodynamics, and water density.
After 6 years, of not registering their name..now they think they can get a bit out of the big juicy Apple, eh?
What I don't like about this is that it makes Apple look bad, and then after a bit of digging (no more than reading/. comments here, actually)..you find out it's another 'cry wolf' case.
There are real incidences of Apple overstepping their bounds.. but all the ones I read here are sensationalist cases of the other parties being in the wrong.. such as developers 'getting ripped off' and then you find out Apple only rejected their app because they violated the app guidelines, and anyways Apple were already developing it.. etc etc....If it ever comes to a case where Apple is clearly in the wrong../. readers will miss it, and not even bother to dig deep.
Cry Wolf, anyone?
Agreed.. but somehow NOBODY ever implements power user tweaks and third party app functionality..
unless you count the short term inclusion of tweak UI years ago in windows.
ps..Love your sig.. but what if your not watching?
Considering the profit margins needed , i can only think of only one business that can survive the backhoe into the ledgers that Groupon appears to gouge out.. and that business is the illegal drug trade.. any guesses on the probability of seeing Groupons for, say, Pot?..And, isn't Groupon the digital equivalent of the old coupon booklets that used to often cause headaches for retailers the minute they bought into them? A lot of retailers apparently didn't understand, then, either, that these are only useful if they increase the customer base, and/or traffic..
If it's the same in your country as ours, you have to be rather specific about any FOI request, such as 'all the minutes of the council meeting at so and so date, regarding zombie attacks'. which would lead me to believe that the council were set up, to appear as fools, by *someone*, ahead of time, i.e. during the meeting by directly or indirectly introducing the motion, who then later tipped off someone to request FOI...
Just a hunch....
Well of course 'nobody' wants to step on the toes of the tobacco giants.. "Go after the smokers instead..i say'".. do you realize the amount of 'good' these companies do with the immense amount of taxes governments recoup from tobacco tax.. all at the cost of only a few million smokers' lives..
How would Governments be able to 'balance' their budgets with out the immense tax resources they provide..
No.. it's good political sense to be 'anti-smoking' as long as you're not 'anti tobacco'.. that's just so.. so..so.. Un-American......Tongue FIRMLY planted you know where...
Indeed, why stop there.. you can next also block any site that 'promotes immorality' or 'encourages civil disobediance'.
And while at it, why not have a 'make your neighborhood safer' website where you can post the names of 'troublemakers' and politically inconvenient types..
Hey.. why not dispense with websites altogether, and just incarcerate anyone who might commit a crime in the future....
I am Canadian.. and.. I can assure you,, Canadians everywhere will protest this action...NOT !
They'll probably yawn and say "what's on the tube dear?".
WE have government programs in place to guarantee our right to punish anyone who offends us, in any small way..
Yeah,, even the mighty shall Fear us! For we shall punish those who post video, and raise up them who fight to retain the right to serve food with unwashed hands!
We shall take down the great Unclean hordes of supporters of "Freedom of the Press'.. for we are the HRC....so it looks like that school is following in a Grand Old Canadian Tradition started by the HRC zealots
Actually, it occurs that if Bill had been running Berkeley then PC-Geos would have been the standard by now.. the reason Windows (which was very crude indeed compared to Geoworks in 1991) took off was directly because of all the prescient moves by an individual with 'no taste'..;-)
i.e. Geoworks had nobody else but themselves to blame for a litany of bad decisions, by *every* owner of the marque right up to, and including Breadbox.. although there are just too many differences between them and Microsoft to list, a good example is the developers kits..
MS practically gave them away.. Geos charged a king's ransom for the same..
IMHO only a certifiable IDIOT tries to make a large profit off of devkits, especially if the installed software base is not large...
Geos/NDO/Breadbox is proof that the inmates shouldn't run the asylum.. i.e. coders shouldn't run software companies...
Bill Gates is the exception to the rule.. to the point that some would argue he's even less gifted a coder than Steve Jobs.. but, like Steve, there's no arguing he knew how to run a software company profitably.....
Isn't.. um.. hacking a Public broadcasting station kinda like stealing from a library?..Or dipping into the change bucket at a soup kitchen?...Just asking.. is all...
i have just read for the first time ever, a whole page of slashdotters who all *agree* with each other, about how bad this is..
Surely.. there must be some kind of way to use that to stop these totalitarian maniacs.. i only wish i knew what that was...
It amazes me that so many people who advocate control of drugs think that the way to achieve this is by criminalizing them..
Since the government , or related industry , is not allowed to sell or manage illegal substances they basically have handed over control to the underground. And.. considering the profits to be made in the current illegal drug trade.. it is certainly NOT in the best interests of the underground trade to have *anything* legalized..it's been implied in the past that some of the stiffest political support for keeping the status quo has been *supported* by the 'underground'.. and I'd believe that one...
as regards Meth.. for better or worse.. when it was still legal and in the hands of physicians.. it's been implied that it *won* world war 2 (!)
Like others here have implied..consider yourself lucky to be able to BUY equity at this point..if the company's doing that well it's a golden opportunity.. it's way too late to get paid in equity.. as others have pointed out.. shared risk = shared equity..contracting = NO risk..
Doesn't seem like much when you put it that way....if they. just charge all the victims 2.50 instead of compensating them the'll have a rosy quarter...
You might be interested to know, that i received a failing grade in a post-secondary essay, in large part because the *english* teacher was insistent that the correct term was 'could care less'.. over my protestations.. my insistence that *he* needed a refresher is what led to the less than stellar grade (!)
