This technique would not completely replace what already exists, nor would it be able to power the entire us from a corner of it due to power loss problems. If every house had its own solar panels and heat collectors for hot water, a ground-loop heat exchanger and perhaps a microturbine, we wouldn't even need a power grid for the most part. Couple this with energy efficient appliances and you get a Zero Energy Home, one that takes no power from an off-property source. Sounds admirable enough a goal.

sending media files through the keyboard port? umm, no. New macs use USB for the keyboard, USB is 12mbps, the iPod connects via firewire(iee1394), which is 400mbps, and is designed for things like digital video cameras and harddrives, it is very fast.

Now read what you wrote and read what gig wrote:

It's a cool product that takes advantage of the fact that FireWire has been standard on Macs for a long time. Sending media files through the keyboard port is a bug. I'm glad Apple made this so obvious by fixing the bug.

Gig stated that this product takes advantage of FireWire, so your nit there is off base. Gig then said that using USB for file transfers is a 'bug' and should not have happened in the first place. This is refering to other products such as Nomad, etc. The "fix" to the bug is FireWire.

  5. Re:Not good on Hard Drives as Backup Media? · · Score: 1

I used to work with tapes a lot, and the biggest problem wasn't the mechanical device but the media on which it records. Tapes break, and how! modern tape drives (such as DDS 4mm) will carefully tension things, but I cannot trust my data to a thin ribbon of plastic.

Also, if that drive were to happen to break, it would usually break with a tape in it. Not good at all.

A portable firewire/i.link or similar drive would be nice to have around with a quick backup. It would get my vote. Then again, I liked my syquest portable drive cartridge. They were so darn simple and portable.

This is a really neat device. I'd love to take one and rip its guts out to build an info display for my server. I don't have a monitor on that machine, so something like this would be welcome. The large lcd would be nice for displaying bar graphs etc. It's head and shoulders above an Orbital display, bar the easy orbital interface.
