This is my favorite Carlin quote proving that the "old man" Carlin was always on top of things. (unlike our president)
"The worst thing about e-mail is that you can't interrupt the other person. You have to read the whole thing and then e-mail them back, pointing out all their mistakes and faulty assumptions. It's frustrating and time consuming. God bless phone calls." -- George Carlin
I regret not buying tickets to his show in time and missing my last opportunity to see him life in Phoenix AZ. You'll be missed Carlin.
The aggregated information companies are also very responsible for the mortgage crisis mess. Up until recently income could be overstated without being checked if the credit rating was high enough. That led to many people getting loans they could never afford just because they managed their credit well.
This quote by Fletcher Knebel seems to keep proving true. In a way now that people all over the world are banned from smoking in social settings, some new leading cause of statistics has to be created.
I remember having high schools in Romania which had career paths in mind. They were preparing people for mostly outdated professions, and were the worst schools around. They were all communist fallout, and due to low flexibility in the workforce, a major reason for post-communism unemployment.
What we need is schools with different mother languages so that people can expand their mind through thinking in more than one language and fit better in the global economy.
One thing that is worth mentioning is that it takes half an hour for the light to travel from Mars which means the robot operators have to wait a long time to make any intelligent feedback-based move.
Imagine turning your head right and not seeing what's there for at least half an hour.
What you mention is just the tip of it. I watched a frontline episode in which they talked about how the feds demanded records of everyone from the casions in Vegas. If that's not Orwellian, I don't know what is.
Millions of people had and still have to deal with communist dictatorships. Having to live in such a society, I can assure you that Orwell is dead on regarding the Big Brother society. There might not have been video surveillance but there were microphones everywhere and phone conversations were listened in on.
Big brother is out to get you because he gets his power from control. It's not that big brother is really more powerful through his control, it's that stripping people of their power makes him powerful over them.
Societies where people are driven by individual self-interest are better off because the power gets spread evenly and no one can destroy people's dreams by using unjust power.
As far as Scientology goes, the ideas in 1984 don't even compare to dianetics. Fictional aliens whose souls make people anxious are unreal while human evil is very real and being afraid of it should be more powerful than the willingness to submit to it for temporary mental peace.
I actually wanted to see Rio because I always thought of it as a good party and entertainment location but after they got their Jesus statue voted 2nd, I lost interest.
For an OS to be successful with desktops, there is a need for a killer app. Take for example Word and Lotus 123 on Windows, and Photoshop on Apple. Linux really needs an exclusive killer-app to be successful on the desktop.
Porting of other important apps from Windows will only happen when the new killer-app is available on Linux.
If performance could relate so much to strictly hardware dollars, it would be very nice but unfortunately there's a lot more that goes into having good performance than lots of hardware.
Most companies cut major corners around testing processes, monitoring tools, skilled tuning workforce, and so on. I'm sure their budget for performance tuning pales in comparison with security budgets which are mostly there to deal with exaggerated threats.
I have to disagree with you on the customer support. Actually the customer support at Dell has been great for me. At my company we used to have IBM support our desktops and they were terrible compared to Dell.
Where I believe Dell has huge problems is that their servers are pretty lame and their strong-point which was initially the desktops/laptops market has been neglected.
A few examples of why I believe this are things like cutting corners by using one year warranty hard drives in laptops they give out 3 year warranty for (everyone I know who has a laptop like mine had a hard drive failure within 2 years), and installing poorly tested batteries that blow up.
The main reason though is that they effectively killed their cool image by doing very grown up (uncool) things which just pushed away their main customers. For example firing their spokesperson because he got caught with a small amount of pot, which is not even a criminal offense in most evolved places was an absolutely stupid decision.
It used to be "Dude, you're getting a Dell" and now it is "Sir, you should get a Dell because you could save money, blah blah blah"
This thing has been displayed in other cities but only Boston got scared and implemented high security measures without even researching what those characters are.
Maybe people in Boston should start hitting the Moonijuana.
If he's so smart and the best at keeping the network secure, why did he store passwords on his hard drive in clear text?
It's seems like a pretty dumb thing to do.
It's clear that the CIA is working with Slashdot to cover up secret spy satellites that can penetrate tin foil.

That's exactly why in some contries your ticket is based on how much you earn.
Makes sense, Tuttle is an HVAC engineer.
However, I don't see how smart engineers could be susceptible to extremist Muslim brainwashing.
If you loved Deus Ex, BioShock is your game.

Does that mean that the drives will not work with Linux?
Oh yeah, because astronauts poop their pants in free-fall.

Reducing the cost of wireless services reduces the expenses of Oil companies.
I definitely spend a lot of time on that and I'm sure a many others do too.

I wonder how this compares to the Motorla MING which claims to be Linux-based also.

Linux might be ready for the desktop but most of the software that we use is not ready for Linux.
When I send files to Linux-only users, they whine because they have no means to open them.
The president has ruled that war is peace. Since he ruled it, it must be right.
I was wondering about that. Can this case be used as a precedent?
