  1. Time to Assay! on Moon Mining Gets a Closer Look · · Score: 1

I'm just a humble Humanoid, but but I've always wanted to send M.U.L.E.s up to some of those promising-looking mountainous areas. I just hope there's not a Planetquake or Acid Rain storm.

Maybe I'll even find the Wampus!

  2. Misread headline on Web Release of the Open Movie Elephants Dream · · Score: 0

And thank god it wasn't right. At first skim all I caught was "wet" (rather than "web"), "release", "dream" and "Elephant's".

I don't care how it was made, the last thing I want to see is a movie about elephants having wet dreams!

  4. Jakob Nielsen weighs in on the hype on Britannica Attacks - Nature Returns Fire · · Score: 2, Interesting
Nielsen happens to comment on this in this week's AlertBox. He labels the fight as "hype level: yellow", and says Nature's conclusion is misleading.
First, while counting errors is easy, it's not sufficient for evaluating a publication's quality. Given time constraints, it's also important that a topic's coverage emphasizes the most important points so readers aren't bogged down in minutiae. Writing style and clarity matter as well, as does point of view. All of these are more a matter of editorial judgment, and are not as easily scored as factual errors.
  5. Bullpens are bullshit on Cubicles a Giant Mistake · · Score: 5, Insightful

The collaborative power of people working on the same project sitting together is crap.

For every time it saves time for one person (in a (typical?) four-person bullpen to be able to call out a question to the others, there's exactly three times it distracts and breaks the flow of the others.

And that's purposeful interruptions; it's not even counting incidental distractions (phone calls, thinking-out-loud comments, etc.).

I've worked in both private offices and open environments, and I'm with Joel. Privacy and lack of interruption is key for developers.

I set this milestone just today, coincidentally.

My god, I don't think I've ever seen so many nasty vitriolic comments on Slashdot before. Not even directed against traditional flamewar enemies like Real, RIAA or MS itself.

It's called a "mistake", and they happen to everyone. Lucky for us readers, ours don't happen in front of 4 quadrillion page-views per day.

So okay, all you me-too'ers, chill with the anti-CmdrTaco rants and cheap shots about how it'll be dupe-posted tomorrow. Har har. You're fucking hilarious. Whoo. I'm all tired out from laughing at your cleverness.

Meanwhile, not a single criticism of whatever dumbass with too much time on his or her hands it was that Photoshopped this up in the first place! Allow me to be the first. "Dumbass!"

To whoever said this proved that Slashdot jumped the shark, I'm worried it may be true - only not of the editors; of the readers and commenters.

According to my research, you can get the Extended DVD (list price US $40) at Amazon for $26. You get free shipping plus a "Movie Cash" ticket good for one admission to The Two Towers.

The other contender is Walmart.com. The price is the same, and you have to pay $3 shipping, but if you preorder, you get a free t-shirt.

I'm not affiliated with either, just sharing my findings (and hoping if someone else knows of better deals, they'll post back!)

This was a great trailer until they gave away Gandalf's return. I mean, quite a few people would know this given the wide readership of the books, but for ~half the audience that hasn't read them, isn't this a ridiculously massive spoiler?
