Mechanical parts break. I've got a firewall and a file server/TS server that run 24x7 for my house. I open them up every 2 years and clean out all the fans, and replace any that need it. As well, they usually get hard drive upgrades at this point - no need on running on >2 year old disks that may fail.
Oh yea - the one is a pentium pro, the other is an AMD k6-2 500. Not top of the line servers, but then again, if the CPU fans go on either of them, I doubt they'd melt. But, I could underclock that 500 and have it be totally silent - except for the power supply....
I won't even start with my Baystack switch though. There are times I thought about pulling all of the 60mm fans in it (4 total, whiney as hell) and putting in a few 120mm's on the top....
Oh.. did I mention my "server room" is in the basement of my house? I'm not one to like a lot of noise, especially when trying to sleep. A silent server room to me would be wonderful.
The receiver isn't charged for SMS -- at least not with Cingular (no affiliation - just have their service...)
A friend of mine didn't buy a text package so he pays 10 cents per message when he SENDS one. I can receive unlimited messages / month with no fee. Therefore, when I have a need to have a device page me, I usually set it up to just e-mail my phone..... which then gets converted to an SMS at Cingular's end... Very very handy.
However, you could hook up a more effecient antenna. I don't mean anything with significant gain, mind you, but a nice 1/2 or 3/4 wave antenna would probably do wonders more for the signal than would the antenna built in.
Of course, I am somewhat ignorant as to what length of antenna that would be for the actual FM band, so consider me really stupid if the antenna would need to be 1000 feet long for a 1/2 wave...:)
Awwww. People who aren't 100% "up front" to you are people you don't like?
You've just described 99 percent of the world's population. People will do just about anything for a dollar, including not telling you upfront who is paying them....
You're making a very strong assumption that "gay" = "plays with makeup."
I've got a friend of mine who is gay, and believe me, he does NOT look the part. At least what would normally set off thoughts of "boy, he's gay"...
So let's put it this way -- there are gay people who don't act all "glitter-girlish". There are also the more... how shall I say... flamboyant gay people.
The second of the two are the ones you generally notice.
Actually, I just went on my honeymoon (gasp! Married Slashdotter!) and was suprised to learn that lighters (even the non-fillable bic disposables) and matches are confiscated.
When I flew about a year ago, they confiscated a refillable lighter, but let me on the plane with a non-refillable (yup, I smoke....)
Now, we got on the Cruise ship and I had to pay 3.50$ for a novelty lighter (seemed to be the only ones they had for sale) of which I had to throw away before I got to the security check in Orlando.
Apparently, even if you put them in your "checked" luggage, they'll still confiscate them.
Now I know you can't really smoke on planes anymore, but what is the point of confiscating a lighter? I can see if you had a bulk pak of 30 of them or so, then you might have a problem; but when they see I had 3 packs of cigarettes stowed away in my carry-on, they had to have somewhat of a clue that I would be using the lighter to smoke a cigarette every now and again.
Not to mention the lighter that got confiscated on the way down to Orlando was 3/4 empty.
Local building codes require that you put in power outlets?
At least in the "consumer" space, the only thing I've seen power plugs in older joints would be for the occasional vacuum cleaner. However, a group of us thought it would be fun to sit down with some SLA batteries and have a game fest at our local establishment....
Couldn't be FPS, but most older (1ghz or so) laptops are decent enough at RTS games.
I sometimes use my whizzbang MX1000 cordless over in my living room. Through a set of drywall, about 15 feet away from the receiver. Since I haven't shelled out the money for an RF remote for my main machine yet (but have it all hooked into the system) I can use the mouse buttons to stop and start playback. Kinda handy actually.
Or, since there's this new thing called the internet, you could just download the new drivers.
I honestly didn't even bother with the CD when I installed my MX1000 about 6 months ago... just downloaded the latest, fired it up. No extra software here for me.
I'm real spoiled at home now though. I keep looking to push on the buttons to do the full page down/up on my mouse at work; I'm constantly trying to tilt my work mouse's wheel sideways (it's just a plain 2 button wheel mouse), and I'm always getting in the way of the mouse cord...
I almost want to spend the money to buy one for work....
Wow. That's a heaping lot o' requests.... lemme break this one down, in UT2k4 style:
1. Game servers have the options of having the translocator on or off for that specific instance of the server. From what I've seen, most online games on 2k4 are "off".
2. You can get out of all chat channels in 2k4. As well, you can turn on or turn off text-to-speech for the typed messages (which is actually more handy than you might think...)
3. People are always going to check their stats. People want to beat other people. Don't look at them?
4. Filters are a godsend on UT2k4. Just select the "standard servers" checkbox and off you go!
5. When getting into a game, check to see if one of the popular anti-cheat routines is enabled (TCC, for one) - I've found that this gets you a decent game, without the people who can seemingly put a rocket into you as you're rounding a corner (when they're across the room...)
There are FPS games out there that will eliminate most of the annoyances you speak of - I've been playing UT2k4 since it was released, and it's still a lot of fun. Oh yea - you mentioned the voice chat stuff... we now play a LOT of assault, and the game is 100 times better when you can chat with your teammates. But, you should use something like TeamSpeak - it has voice activation, and you can set up seperate rooms, and even password the server etc so that you don't end up with a bunch of immature potty-mouthed idiots.
Just my 2 cents. Now you're making me want to re-install Q3 for some more FPS fun....
Aren't you the guy without a TV?
I thought you were too cool to post on slashdot.
Ummm.. probably not. Unless you are comparing chips that are on different processes.
Then you're comparing Apples to Oranges (see K7 vs Athlon XP)....

Hack the iTrip, go to jail via FCC.
:)

One of the few times that /.ers would want to RTFA... er... pictures...
So the moral of your story is....
Play both sides, and hope to make a profit?
That must be where the lawyers come in to this whole USA legal system thingy.... and yes, I live in the US.
Come on.
There's not a lot of stuff from that time period that we all look fondly back on. Mullets? Clothes? You name it, most of it was bad.
it imploded out
:)
How does something "implode out"?

YMMV. Truly.

That's Freedom Fries, you communist bastard.....
I swear, the next time a shoplifter slaps a misdemeanor charge on me, I'm gonna call the cops!
At least you knew who's floppy was in your slot then!
Wow.
Just. Wow.

You, my friend, need some funny points.
A bit slow but it will get you there, like a senior citizen.
That could be taken SO the wrong way.
but it's also nothing to shake a stick at.
I agree. I shook a stick at it and it took my arm clean off!
Bad canyon!
When I robbed a bank (using a Glock 19),
/. ever expected to see these combination of words in a conversation on /. - anyone?
OK, show of hands. How many people on
You left a dangling "2" on that "H2O2".
Monoxide = 1 O.
...
Just where in the world are you supposed to find a bucket of blood?
OTOH, I guess you didn't state "human" blood...
