  1. God... on RealNetworks Sues Microsoft Over Antitrust Issues · · Score: 5, Insightful

If Real didn't make their player so goddamn intrusive when it comes to computer use, I'd be happy to support them on this. I cannot stand the fact that whenever I launch the RealOne player, it puts its advertisement programme into the background, and I have to kill it and remove it out of the registry to from stop it from starting up whenever I login.

Microsoft is in the wrong in this situation, but Real is worse by selling personal information, having a player that eats more than its fair share of needed memory, and including what may be spyware with its software. If this were Apple and Quicktime, I'd be more willing to go and support them on this.

The irony about the US and the UK using imperial is the fact that the US did everything it could to seperate itself from Great Britain, and that at the same time, they use imperial, which is the UK system derived from measurements set by the Royal Family.

The ticket machines for Skytrain and Seabus here in Greater Vancouver have been replaced with a Windows 2000-based system. They replaced the nearly twenty-year old ticket machines we had currently in place, as they were incapable of taking in newer coins and bills that the Canadian Mint was giving out.

So far, I haven't seen them blue-screen or do anything beyond having simple mechanical problems, but I have seen technicians come in and administer the machines -- there are about 270 of these machines lying around the area.

Beyond having the ability too soon accept Interac, credit cards, and in the future, smart cards, they have behaved pretty well so far. I rarely interact with them, due to the fact that I pay for my transit on a monthly-basis, but everytime I have walked by them, the screen has looked perfectly normal, and hasn't shown its Windows traits beyond the administrator panel when someone is around to administer them.

  19. Starchoice dishes on Using an Old Satellite Dish as a WLAN Antenna · · Score: 1

Right now, I have the first-generation Starchoice dish -- the circular one -- and for the past few months I have been looking into making it a WLAN antennae myself.

Effectively, from the looks of it, it doesn't matter what the dish's shape it is, as long as the left-to-right width doesn't exceed fifty or sixty centimetres. As long as it meets that width, it doesn't matter if it is a circular or elliptic shape, it really doesn't matter.

Beyond that, I am not too familiar with satellite technologies beyond knowing the encryption on my receivers are hard to crack -- some funky Motorola algorythm that I am not familiar with. Most of these dishes can only receive, but what exactly stops them from sending? Is it a dish limitation, or is it simply the receiver only is programmed to receive and nothing more?
