    No, actually plenum cable's jacket is thinner, so that the arse end of a non-plenum RJ-45 jack doesn't clamp down tight enough. Plenum jacket is made of Teflon, rather than PVC.

    My iBook has no PC Card slots. Doesn't need 'em.

    Oh, good grief. It's already established that VT didn't get any special deals from Apple; the paid standard educational pricing for the G5's.

    But you can bet they got a TERRIFIC deal from Infiniband -- so your numbers are incorrect.

    As far as A/C, power, and labor, RTFA -- there have been several.

    I've noticed on many occasions that a review of a product contains incorrect specs -- and they're always incorrect so that the product looks better than it is. An example might be a review stating an LCD monitor has a 400:1 contrast ratio, but it's actually 300:1. I'm guessing these types of "mistakes" usually aren't the reviewer's fault, but instead are "intentional typos" on the specs given to the reviewer.

    Virginia Tech got the standard Apple .edu discount on the G5's for the Terascale cluster. No more, no less.

    I have no idea what kind of deal they got from Infiniband.

    The business partner of the guy who built my house owns one. It was parked at the house next door during the final days of the completion of my house. I sat in it (but he didn't offer a ride or a drive). I remember thinking the interior looked primitive by today's standards, compared to the exterior.

    I'm a firm believer in security through obscurity, USED AS PART OF A SECURITY PARADIGM. (sorry for all the shouting)

    I do agree that security through obscurity ALONE is nearly worthless.

    We support Mozilla, Outlook (*shudder*), Outlook Express, Pine, Eudora, and SquirrelMail (an excellent IMAP-based webmail client). We encourage Mozilla. Personally, I use Mail.app on OSX.

    ...was made by Wyse, attached to a Wyse 286 PC I used at work many years ago. It had neither an XT nor a PS/2 connector; instead, it attached via a modular phone (RJ-11) style connector. It had a very light touch and a nice sound. I wish I could get one for my G4.

    I think it was available on PPC and Alpha and maybe a couple of other architectures.


    Nope, that's it, PPC, Alpha, and x86. There was once a rumored SPARC port, but I don't think that one ever saw the light of day.


    I've never seen Windows on anything other than an x86 - is there anyone out there who's seen it on the other platforms it was available for?


    Yeah, we used to run it on an Alpha here. Nothing really special about it.

    I just acquired (used) my "Yikes"-powered G4 a couple weeks ago, and I'm *very* happy with it. This is a machine that was sold for a couple months back in 1999, with a 400MHz CPU (I actually have it o/c'd to 450), and it runs rings around the PC from just a year ago with a 3x faster CPU that I was using before I got this! In usefulness and stability, that is (not in raw clock speed, which Really Doesn't Matter.)

    SONOFABITCH!!!!!!

    Leave it to Microsoft to come along and screw with a product that's cross-platform, cross-vendor, and works very well! I only hope that antivirus updates for the non-Windows products do continue, at least for a couple of years.

    That said, in a way it's good to see Microsoft finally adopting some antivirus technology after ignoring it for so long. I guess after so many years of viruses/worms being released that only affect Windows machines, they've been embarrassed and shamed into doing something about it.

  23. OT: Star Trek thoughts that keep me awake at night on Enterprise Getting New Aliens, Hairdos, Weapons · · Score: 1

    While we're on the topic of Star Trek...

    There are a couple of thoughts that have nagged me over the years. Perhaps someone more versed in Star Trek minutiae can answer.

    1. I've always thought that perhaps Guinan was a member of Species 8472 ... she always reacted with intense fear/hatred towards the Borg, which would be consistent with 8472's reaction. And I remember a TNG episode in which Q told Picard not to trust Guinan and hinted that she was not at all what she appeared to be. Anyone else have anything to add?

    2. Why have we never heard of the Denobulans until "Enterprise"? It seems like they would have appeared later since they were working with Earth so early on...yet I can't recall any mention of them in TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, or any of the movies. What happened to them "later"?

    No, 'e' is for 'education' (as in eMac). It even says so on Apple's website.
