I wish everyone else saw it your way. I'm tired of content creators acting like they should own the stream from their end to my brain. And they keep convincing legislators that it should be so.
I'm not saying everything should be open-season. But things like format- and time-shifting legitimately-purchased media should be no one's business but mine.

What I don't get, though, is if you're a huge fan of debit cards, why wouldn't you just use a credit card?
For me, one reason - discipline. Or lack thereof. With a debit card, I can't overspend, and the bill is taken care of instantly. On credit, I could see making a slightly overbudget purchase, promising myself I'll make up for it, and then not. And then getting hit with interest.
Also, I don't like signing things. I'd rather hit 5 buttons in a half-sec than fiddle with those electronic pens and tiny writing windows...
I think we're too far down the thread to be seen, but...
However, I think it would be ok if modchips were only allowed to be sold in conjunction with the purchase of an imported game.
I think the best solution is for the console makers to stop region-locking their systems (GB exception duly noted). I bought a stock Japanese PS2 strictly for importing. I could have gone the modchip route for about $100 less, but it would have meant disk-swapping, using a GS/AR hack, etc. Having a stock system means effortless it-just-works gaming.
That said, if the PS3 was region-free (or was offered in a region-free version at higher cost to offset territorial licensing, etc...) I would be all for banning modchips.
Until then, there is a significant legal use. Maybe not by volume, but...
Not sure where you stand on the "frivolous litigation" issue, but think about this: If lawyers* weren't so willing to take on hopeless, illogical, or downright fraudulent cases, would there be so many clients getting lawsuits started?
IOW, there are way too many ambulance-chasers convincing people on shaky ground to "go for it". All those "no cost to you unless we win" offers have led to a more-litigious society, and the IP lawyers have elevated this to a new art form...
* Not all lawyers are scum-sucking bottom-feeders. But their number is small and weakening steadily...
Interesting choice of nick given your impassioned response.
I should have to hit site after site and download short, out-of-context clips of a handful of songs from a small number of artists because the RIAA forgot how to promote talent? O-kay...
As for the judge, bring 'im (or 'er) on. I don't have a broadband connection at home, I'm blocked at work, and I don't have any p2p apps installed at either location. I was simply explaining that the RIAA began digging its own grave when it ignored Napster and now it insists on digging more while asking our legislators to redefine "grave" for them.
I'll let your comments on the RIAA control of airplay stand. The other posters in this thread have rebuked you more convincingly than I could hope to this early in the AM.

I was just talking with a colleague about this...
I mentioned that people pirate because bad music dominates the airwaves. How is someone supposed to know if they're gonna like a CD if it's never played? Our top-40 station plays a short rotation that I bet I could get on a dozen or so CDs. What about the 200 other discs at BestBuy?
Radio used to be great for artist exposure. Well, it still is, for sufficient values of $artist as determined by the RIAA...
People have to buy Windows. They get IE for free. If they go out and download Mozilla, why should Microsoft care?
A) Nobody *has* to buy an OS. Most do out of convenience, preference or ignorance. But there's no threatening gun.
B) MS should *start* caring because the more people that realize IE can be replaced for free with quality F/OSS (or economical commercial alternatives) the more people will realize Windows itself is replaceable.

So you think that the total cost a speed cop giving someone ticket is less than $50 ?
If the cop (or more likely 2 cops) are getting paid $30/hr, it only takes 1.2 tickets an hour to equal their salary. If we double the cost/hr to cover fuel, vehicle depreciation, etc., the ticket tag team only needs to write 2 or 3 tickets an hour to break even.
Wanna bet they're writing a hella lot more than 3 in 60 minutes?
And where do YOU live that speeding only costs 50 bucks? Here, it's $52 base + $4 per mile over. I've had 3 speeding tickets in 16 years on the road, and they were $90+ apiece!
...If PS3 is backwards-compatible. Follow me here - Sure, Xbox 2 (or Ybox, or why bother?) will have prettier graphics and a lot of "new-tech" cachet. But the fracture in the game-space of having two incompatible Xboxen might be the opening PS3 needs to keep Sony on top.
Since PS2 dev won't have to stop for PS3, all the investment and tricks learned will still be valuable. Sure, some developers and publishers will stop PS2 coding, but look at how many PS1 games are still out there!
Microsoft won't have that, and they're also asking gamers to keep two systems. Sony is effectively saying "Upgrade to the $350 PS3 by trading in the PS2 for $100, and keep all your games!".
Much less risk to go Sony.
I still want an X2, but I know who's getting my money first!
My understanding of the SpeedChannel commentary went like this:
Renault figures out, based on track conditions, fuel load, air temp, etc. what the ideal clutch pressure/engagement speed is for a wheelspin-free launch and set that into the computer. Red lights go off, Alonso pulls the upshift paddle (or releases the brake - not sure which) and the computer grabs first with a hopefully-optimal clutch drop.
If the number-crunching goes wrong the start is less-than-perfect. But in any event, they aren't using proper TC, just a really slick first-gear engagement!

Nope - I would if I knew more. Hell, if I knew more Japanese I'd think about joining one of the many English-teaching programs over there.

Actually, if you can play Japanese games, there's Menkyo wo Torou. (Get the License)
It's done driving-instructor style with classroom reviews and driving tests, and you have to do a proper "pre-flight" check, signal, observe signs & signals, etc.
The game is entirely in Japanese with lots of reading, and it's a very demanding test of knowledge. But it does do the little things too!
The only reason people keep them around is that they're too lazy to delete them themselves.
Speak for yourself, buddy. I have archived email going back to about 1998. A lot of it is work-related and of limited value as a technical or "how did I do that before?" resource.
Some is receipt-based mail either for bill-paying or eBaying. Some is personal, and a lot of fun to re-read and reminisce over.
Do I need close to a gig of email and attachments? Probably not. But two CD-Rs cost a whopping dollar and I can easily move them from machine to machine if I want them live.
Hell, if anyone knows an easy way to get email out of GroupWise's archive and into Outlook.pst format, I'd be indebted!

From the Article: It's unbelievable how different things are now. That system had maybe 128 MB of memory. But we were on the cusp of extreme and rapid change. We were two years away from dedicated microchips. Nobody has a clue how radically things have changed in the last fifty years.
128K, maybe. There's no way an Odyssey had 128 megs, is there?
Ummm, it's cancelled. There are no new episodes in production. CN is showing quite a few "rerely-seens" in the AS block mostly because Fox kept pre-empting the last season or so with football (or "football" for our European friends).
There is talk that Family Guy may return to production since its AS reruns are scoring so well. As Bender said, "There's always hope...AHAHAHA!"
My wife and I have 3 of the retro collections - Konami, Namco and Williams. We grew up on these games, and the ones in the collection are pretty much all twitch games. Great fun for short periods of time and you don't feel too bad if you have to switch off and get back to life (Unlike being midway through a two-hour enduro in Le Mans or GT3).
HOWEVER, why, pray tell, do NONE of these collections have a high-score save, options for control and difficulty, or proper collision detection (Williams, I'm looking at YOU!)?
It's a real PITA to have to remember high scores or keep a piece of paper with scores handy. Those GBAs go everywhere...
