  2. some validation, at least on Amazon Makes a Profit · · Score: 1

i assume that most readers of slashdot recognize the value in the concept of having an internet business, and that many of the dot-coms were ahead of their time -- beyond the visible spectrum for most americans.

it is therefore nice to see a pure internet business pulling ahead. i am tired of ignorant, 60-year-old pundits claiming that the internet experiment failed. it is inevitable, and this is yet another small step in that direction.

  3. my personal solution on Non-MP3 Codecs? · · Score: 2, Redundant

i use a non-lossy format known as the Audio Interchange File Format, or AIFF, to store my audio files. They can be burned to CDs very easily -- you can't fit as many on one CD as MP3, but the CDs will play in every CD player I've come across, and the sound is CD-quality.

  5. it makes sense .... on LotR Cleans Up at AFI · · Score: 1

the appeal of the movie was not to nerds, ala star wars, but to people who had read the book, which applies to a vast number of americans.

that said, i found the movie disappointing, not having read the book(s). the lack of resolution, while perhaps expected by those who had read it, left me a bit bewildered. if movies are going to be made in such a way, the next movie should come out sooner than a year later. it seems to be deliberately done to try for an unprecendented triple best picture oscar sweep.

  6. good habit to start on WinXP Security Flaw · · Score: 1

i appreciate that one of the options for installing the patch, as suggested on the patch web site, is to 'run this program from its current location'.

  15. gnome over x? on GNU-Darwin Goes Beta · · Score: 4, Insightful

i am truly at a loss as to why one would install gnome over os x. i understand the issue of an os being open-source, etc., but you can pick up a $99 pentium box to run gnome, if you're that interested in having it.

the point is not being able to work around it -- the point is that microsoft is trying to own the internet. this is the first step of what everyone has seen coming. is it a coincidence that xp shipped today? i doubt it.

now is the time that we are getting the solid ammo to point out to everyone we know that microsoft is trying to control the web. we've been telling friends and family for years, but they pooh-poohed us. now they are starting to do it, and we can show people proof. so show them.
