  1. Lack of laptop need? on Notebook Upgrades: Hacking your Dell/Compaq/Toshiba · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've thought about upgrading my old laptop, but why? Personally I used to live out of a Compaq Armada (P133, etc)... then I got my first Palm Pilot. Ever since I believe I've actually lugged my old laptop out once or twice, and then only to offload pictures from my digital camera while on trips.

I can see where there would be definite needs for an honest-to-god laptop, but it really seems that the days of the old notebook have come and gone when you consider the sheer handyness of the alternatives like Palm and PocketPC.

It would really depend on whether or not you're wanting to produce music, layout a magazine, and whatnot. If you're wanting to just use the applications included (Calendar, very lightweight web browser, email, etc) then I imagine it would be great. Definitely cuts out the bloat.

If you use a *NIX then you probably know the ease of running Lynx to hit a webpage, or just WGET'ing a file real quick. Let alone hitting Pine for email, or a ton of other oft-used apps without the overhead of a GUI environment. (Plus remember the hardware requirements that come with a decent GUI environment.)

My what an odd thing to say.

Hmm... in an enclosed vehicle highly prone to terrorism and hijacking, which also happens to be very highly susceptible to depressurization from any loss of structural integrity... hey, let's give everyone on it guns! Luckily everyone on board will also be a crack shot in a turbulent environment, and you won't have to worry about someone shooting out a window. Oh and luckily everyone there will be totally sane, and you wouldn't have anyone just 'freaking out' and starting shooting... possibly because they didn't realize they were afraid of flying until they got up there.

Or let them all carry knives. Let's get older business guys up there being sliced apart by people used to handling them... or beter yet shot by better armed attackers.

Though the gun idea is neat. That way, if anything, when the passengers get mad at delays they can just shoot crewmembers until they actually take off.

There's a big grey blob between your ears. Use it _before_ hitting the Post button.

  5. What about the other open companies? on LEGO Responds to Business 2.0 · · Score: 3, Interesting

It's a great stand by LEGO to embrace the hacktivist community, and like it's been posted it's probably due, at least partly, to that factthat they blew away sales projections. Shouldn't others pick up on this business model? Not give away their products or IP items, but to allow/encourage their users to extend the original concepts in ways they hadn't thought of. Heck, look at Tivo. They have always been very encouraging of its hacking users, and think of the thousands of boxes they've sold due to that very fact alone. (I can talk since the hackability is the reason I have one on order right now.)

Heck, if anything it's really cheap R/D for new features and bugfixes.

I just had a conversation with a Russian born & bred employee at my hotel about the Palestinian reaction footage.
He says they are cheering, because they see this as a beginning of the United States, being an arrogant and intrusive entity....finally getting their due for interferring, again, where they don't belong.

I say...but what about the innocent people that died today? How could they cheer for the deaths of many innocent people?

He says...How did people react to the bombing of Hiroshima? Did America feel a sense of 'ha! we got you!' as a result of that...because overseas...that was what was reported.

    I say...that's different...we were at war.

He says...but the Palestinians are at war...and have been for all of their lives.

I don't subscribe to those sentiments personally, but I have to admit that reading that made me stop, set aside my anger for a moment, and do some serious thinking.

  21. Some stations do increase listener base on Future of Digital Music in Doubt · · Score: 2, Interesting

A local talk radio station (WGOW 102.3) had tremendous success via streaming over the Internet. They had people calling constantly who had moved out of the area and listened to keep up with the hometown news, and people calling in that had just come across it. As a matter of fact one day they recieved a call from an English pub that apparently listened daily to one of the programs. (And considering I live in Chattanooga, TN that's a heck of a stretch.) One of the best known callers was a guy from Boston, who always called on their 1-800 line.

Of course that was before the great 'Radio Blackout of 2K1.' They've recently come back up via streaming, but in the time they were down they literally recieved hundreds of messages from people asking where they went. And slowly they're building their streaming base back.

Somehow I imagine that's not an isolated phenomena. However seeing as that most stations aren't as 'interactive' as talk radio is I would imagine that those listeners just wouldn't make their voices heard to the programming directors. And when they went down? The listeners probably just pulled up another station. (Heck I channel-hop in my car, why not on the net)

The listeners are there, just there silently.

With Bellsouth DSL service, it's stated _very_ clearly that you are in no way whatsoever to NAT or otherwise share the connection over a private network. As a matter of fact, just mentioning the work 'Network' to a technical support rep is a good way to have the conversation ended quickly.

Go the extra step and mention that you're running a NAT setup, and you can very quickly find your service suspended.

When I was first setting up my service, I made the mistake of telling the service rep that I had a network car in my system. When I told her it was for access to a network printer (HP 4000TN), it didn't appear to matter. With the network card in my system she was not allowed to help me diagnose my ADSL configuration issue.

I realize that it's different under other companies (Telocity, Mindspring, etc), but going through Bellsouth can give you an up-close-and-personal view of what the article's talking about. :^)
