  1. Re:Easy to forget on The Shallow Roots of the Human Family Tree · · Score: 4, Insightful

Knowing your past helps understand who you are, and what you'll likely be up against in the future. If, by chance, you suffer from a particular disease or disorder, it's important to know what side of the family you inherited that genetic malady from, and how seriously it affected those ancestors. It helps you feel less weird and alone, and if your ancestors lived to a ripe old age, then that should give you hope for the future.

It's also "a good thing"TM not to be forgotten forever in time. Your ancestors may have lived intersting lives and have interesting stories to tell. They were likey good people who don't deserve to be sloughed off into distant and lost memory.

  2. I like Slashdot on The 10 Tech People Who Don't Matter · · Score: 4, Interesting

I've been reading it faithfully since (circa) 1998, but it's not as hardcore as it used to be. It might be I'm getting older and wiser or that I'm not as militant about Linux as I used to be, or it might be a dilution of the nerd population to other discussion forums - I dunno. But the fact is I've seen contenders vie for /.'s crown before (Kuro5hin immediately comes to mind, maybe Plastic) and they've been trounced. Slashdot feels like home. It's a part of my life. I enjoy the readership and have made lots of friends and enemies here. And best of all, I've learned alot.

Malda may be irrelevant to the biz/tech world, but not to me and many other readers. I guess what I'm trying to say is "thanks Slashdot, for being a part of my life!"

I'm like "Um no, there is definetely something wrong with this scenario"... and it seems I was right all along! Think about it:

    a) women as hot as the ones I'm being propositioned by are - "in real life" - never single (for very long anyway).
    b) women don't - "in real life" - say the stupid things they say to me on these dating sites (eg: "do you think you can handle me?") k, whatever BAIT!!
    c) hot women are too busy responding to flirts and messages to look at and proposition vanilla, no name, also rans like myself.

I'm just being realistic here. I don't have an overblown perception of self. I'm an average guy and I'm cool with that, and I know when somethings outta whack. I really don't trust these dating sites and I hope the gov is gonna crack down.

And with children vying for my attention and music in the background (or in my ear), I've been close to clicking the 'submit' button on that bogus PayPal form in the email a couple of times (it's when it asks for my ATM # do I wake up and look at the url).

It definetely can happen. I'd even bet it happens to savvy users as much or more than neophytes because of the very reason I described.

I just can't see alot of Slashdotters jumping at the opportunity to work their ass off just to have their submissions declined and mocked.

The way you sit and stand can and will affect the entire body. Sit up straight, keep the shoulder blades back and the chin tucked in. Don't slouch, and if you're a hangdog like me (head slumps foward as if trying to see the computer monitor better) you'd better stop and correct yourself.

Internet dating has never and will never be cool however, just like find a job or doing your income taxes has and will never be "cool". It's a facet of mortal existance, just done in a different way.
