    In Britain and other commonwealth countries, water is 10 lbs to the gallon.

    Of course in europe and the rest of the world its 1kg per litre.

    New Zealand has been using the NZ dollar AKA Kiwi $ since 10th July 1967. The currency had a fixed rate (detirmined by the govt) against the US$ until around 1984. In the earky 90's it was around 50c US.

    You have to think of the other side as well. 180 degrees from the prime meridian is the international date line. Down the middle of the pacific is probably the best place to put this since it would be inconvenient to have it in the middle of some countries.

    Of course being in the UK you get more because a UK gallon is bigger than a US gallon.

    Doesn't the government issue its own Gift certificates, usable at any store nationwide, available in convenient amounts ($1 $5 $10 $20 $50 $100). For those interested in history, they have pictures of past presidents and founding fathers on one side.

    These do not have any expiration date, and do not have any fees attached (but of course they are affected by inflation.)

    Why not use these when its gift giving time?

    So what is the point of musical ringtones anyway. I believe it may have originally started as a way to have different ring sounds for different people, but got way out of hand. Since it is useful to have different ringtones if you are in a group of people (so you know its your phone ringing nd not one of the others at the table in the restaurant) a good answer would be by default have the phone say the name of the owner of the phone. "Jane Johnson you have a text message" or "John Jacob Jingleheimer-Schmidt you have a phone call" That way it would be obvious whose phone is ringing (and who to beat up if its somewhere innapropriate for cellphones, like a theatre)

    As an extra option it could state who was calling (if the number is on the list of contacts) but this would probably be off by default, as it could be embarrising sometimes...

    Hmmm maybe I should apply for a patent for this idea.

    I don't think there is much chance of Crusade coming back unfortunately.

    Since there are only 10 to the power of 40 or so particles in the universe, you can't sell 10 to the power of 100 of anything.

    IIRC Karel Capek coined the term robot in a book/play called R.U.R. (Rossums Universal Robots. I think its derived from the Czech word for slave.

    Asimov invented the 'Laws of Robotics'. a bit later.

    Looking out the window can only tell you the level of cloudiness, and if its raining or snowing. It doesnt tell you the temperature, humidity, or wind speed (maybe if you have some trees nearby you can get a rough indication of wind speed).

    In an area where temperatures can vary considerably, an accurate measure of tempoerature especially in the winter is important before venturing outside.

    I guess you are from the east coast. Here in the midwest cities tend to be spread further apart. (240-400 miles apart more like it.) And if going at the higher seed got you to the metro area before the main commuter rush you would save even more time travelling within "The Cities".

    One of the main disadvantages of satellite TV is you need a decoder box for each room you have a TV in. I think they charge extra for more than 3. We have 5 TV's in this house. Plus you would have to pay more for the cable internet connection if it wasnt bundled with the TV.

    Its the distance from the center of the object you are orbiting, not the surface.

    We get TechTV as part of the normal cable package (non-digital) from Charter here in west central MN. Its channel 73 (out of 74). Had it since Nov 2002 I think.

    Arexx was included with AmigaDOS 2.0 but came out earlier (in the 1.3 days) as a separate product sold by Bill Hawes. a lot of amiga applications and utilities could be controled with ARexx scripts.

    Yes one of RAH's best works.

    A catapult on the moon could be of great strategic value as a weapon system. Rocks are cheap, and you don't have the problem of fa;;out. Of course you have to be able to defend your catapult or have it hidden underground, like the revolutionaries did in the book.

    Some americans also have block heaters since it can get cold here (MN) too. One week over winter it didnt get above -20f here. Fortunately my wifes car was able to be in the garage for that time.

    This would be because of the shape of the diamond. The facets shape would refract the ligt out to the side at different angles (accentuated by diamonds high refractuve index)

    If you had a completely flat diamond, or one in the shape of a cube, the light would go straight through.

    Fortunately rain isnt the only form of precipitation. For 6 months of the year we get this white stuff that falls from the sky. In spring it melts to form water.
