As far as the "control atmosphere" is concerned, I think you'll see things just like this residing on supercomputers as a result of projects akin to the NEC Earth Simulator.
Every Shadowrunner knows that smart gun technology is something else all together (integration of the gun's sighting system into a cybernetic type of retinal display.)
I'm sorry, but the mainstream media is just going to have to find some other term.
If there were as many games for Linux as Windows, I would happily throw all my M$ software away forever.
But there's no monopoly, oh no. It's not for that reason that every single game that's meant to be played on a computer comes out for M$ but a tiny fraction of those for Linux. No, Sir.

If the manufacturer and/or retailer is not going to take the responsibility and state things like this up front, then it's up to the consumers (us) to spread the word to each other in whatever way we can. Forums like Slashdot should go a long way towards educating the general public, and enlightening potential buyers. If "they're" not going to do it, we will...
///The worm uses a Linux shell code exploit which will run only on Intel systems. This code requires the presence of the shell command/bin/sh in order to execute properly.///
How does the worm know what type of system it's running on? Maybe I shouldn't progress to this question, but why would the virus creator leave out the code necessary to infect other chipsets?
If, like, me, after reading the descriptions you're still having a hard time picturing just exactly what this game is about, here's a site with some videos, looks like mostly from tournaments.

Naw, G, he says, "it all adds up to a fucked up situation."
From the early 90's hit '911 Is a Joke', indubitably.
I just won't patch. The odds of being hacked by a random siteop through WMP are much lower than the odds of being hacked by M$ after installing this patch, as I see it.
This article here, even though it seems to be written for the person wanting to do their own maintenance, seems like it would have some handy information for small repair shops, as well.
It basically points out a few new programs and an physical interface that is designed for use with a laptop that can interpret many diagnostic codes. Just install the software, plug in your car and off you go.
I'm sorry, it just failed to strike me as anything major, simply because we don't know anything about the robots, the lab setup, the prior research or robot behavior, etc. etc.
All this means to me is that a robot drove out into the parking lot without anyone controlling it. Is that really so great a feat? I mean, if it is, please correct me here.
Do they know for sure that it was maneuvering itself towards the outside world with the actual intent of "escaping" or doing anything?
What would have been really interesting to see is what would have happened if they had just sort of followed it around outside for a day or two, of course making sure it didn't get destroyed or anything.
///Salon is now noting that no one is willing to challenge the revised FCC rules, running scared in the (dare I say it?) post-September 11 world.///
Yes, you can say "post-Semtember 11 world" because the truth is, this event obviously had and will continue have life-changing, far-reaching effects and consequences on every American.
It is our job to make sure those effects evoke positive changes in our lifestyles, not negative ones, even in the short term.
Yes, this I will agree with fully. My original point was that there are no "other Earths" out there. Planets that we may theoretically be able to survive on is a different story.
///It's only a matter of time until the Terrestrial Planet Finder program gets going and finds another Earth.///
That will never, ever, ever happen. The odds against there being another planet with the delicate ecosystem of Earth is simply incalculable, literally.
The place we live is unique among all other planets in the universe, it's time to accept that.
Yep, the last small company I worked at had the same problem.
The way we fixed it was to have one of our developers write a small Windows prog for us (I think in Visual Basic?) that had a standard Windows Explorer interface to select folders and such to be backed up, then wrote a small.bat file which could be placed in Windows Task Scheduler to run the program as need be to transfer all the data to our backup drive, which was mapped as a network drive in Windows. The developer even added client-side zip compression to make it nice and tidy.
I think it took him about 5-6 hours to create the program. It was great, I was very grateful to have a developer who knew something about writing small programs for Windows.
//It is for this reason I'm really interested in Linux as server. If I were to get really deep down into the nitty gritty, I could make the OS so unfamiliar that only the most determined hacker would get in.//
That's absolutely right, and one of the huge advantages that Linux has over any MS products in that you can configure in or out any options you want at time of install. Even post-install, the kernel and every type of service is yours to do with as you see fit.
I was at a school that had several Apple IIs for the computer lab, and they let students come in after school to play Choplifter, or whatever other games they had at the time. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. This just sounds like an extension of that idea, I'm definitely all for it.

I don't pay monthly fees for games. I pay one-time fees for games and then play them all I want, online or off. You hear that, game developers?
You have no idea what you're getting yourself into!

That's pretty simple to safeguard against, I just don't compile in the amuck source or libraries at install.
The website offers no insights into why they are doing this, I'm a little confused.
Also, this is in the News category?

William S. Gibson called it the "bonephone" in his stories.
A must for any busy shadowrunner!
