I would really like to see these consumers who accepted the $500-$600 price points well. People that I've talked to, including staunch PlayStation supporters, have said that they don't plan on buying a PS3 because of the high price point.

If the player is right handed, then the on screen avatar should be. If the player is left handed then a left handed avatar.

True, Link is an established left handed character but having the avatar match the player makes more sense. It's much better than making Link right handed and also forcing all the southpaws to "just deal".

I haven't been fishing for over 20 years, but I do use a right hand retrieve reel when fishing. This is where you reel with your right hand. This page even calls a right hand retrieve a "Classic" method but goes on to say that it's just preference. I will say that the Dreamcast's fishing controller is right hand retrieve but you can clearly see that videos show Twilight Princess' fishing as left hand retrieve.

Throwing a constant barrage of OS/browser security pop-ups on the screen does not make it secure. Making it so that at exploitable control can be completely removed and not just "effectively removed" from the system helps make the system more secure but this is just a workaround. If the control was designed to be able to grant system level privileges to a web page than it's time to go back to the proverbial drawing board.

The Action Set was not a launch configuration as it came out three years later in 1988. This does not necessarily mean that there were not bundles containing both SMB and Duck Hunt before this date. Sadly, Nintendo altered the bundled games quite frequently without changing SKUs even. The key sticker on the laptop is obviously an OEM key and would likely require the appropriate OEM install files (OEM pressed XP disc/OEM pressed repair disc/recovery partition) to match. Contact the vendor to get these files.

Anyone that has a Microsoft pressed disc which contains both XP Home and Pro should understand this as these are distributed with an MSDN subscription. Truthfully, I can't say for certain that MS doesn't ship discs like this to OEMs or to corporate "open" license customers but the point remains the same; anyone who would come into possesion of these discs should be aware of this fact.

There are ways around this install incompatibility but I will not help you with that. My advice would be to read your MSDN license agreement and check out the marginally helpful FAQ or to destroy the disc if you do not have the right to use it.

The last two 3D games have been annoying yawn-fests that have caused me to lose any hope of there ever being a good 3D CV. Heck, the N64 game(s) were flawed but at least they had some promise; the IGA produced ones are just pointless.

OK, I'm a little bitter. People associate Castlevania with Koji Igarashi (IGA) even though he hasn't really done anything to better the series for quite some time. Why don't people mention the music and art direction from Ayami Kojima and Michiru Yamane? IGA hasn't even fulfilled the promise of a modern port of Chi no Rondo although we did get a remake of the X68000 version as a consolation prize.

Yep, I entirely agree; bundling an HDMI cable makes no sense as those with HDMI capable screens either already have the appropriate cable or will have no problem dropping extra cash for it. Your average Joe shouldn't be forced to pay the extra $5 (Sony cost) to include it in the box when they're going to hook it up to their crummy NTSC set.

Take that one step further though... Bundling Blu-ray with the PS3 makes no sense either. This is a game machine that we are talking about. Anyone who wants Blu-ray won't mind dropping extra cash for that either.

Blu-ray certainly isn't going to make the game experience better enough to justify the cost of including it in the system over a standard DVD player. I bet that it's a lot more than a $5. Some people speculate that it's closer to $150 being passed on to the consumer.

Now that makes me not even care about paying extra for a silly HDMI cable.

For most people, the caps lock key is useless. Even for someone who uses it, you should at least agree that it certainly doesn't need to be right in home row. A lot of manufacturers will actually change the shape of it to prevent accidental pressings of it.

There are several useless keys that could be removed; print screen, and pause and the other two "lock" keys: scroll lock and num lock. I hate the num lock key as I usually use it immediately after keying in what I thought were numbers only to move the cursor around. I can't fathom why someone would chose to use the number keys as arrow keys when there are actual arrow keys sitting right there. Once those arrow keys were added back in the PC-XT days, they should've removed the num lock key.

No, the reason we still have useless keys is that something will break if we remove them. Scroll lock hasn't had a use that pertained to scrolling in years but some people still use the key for changing displays on a KVM. Your UniQuery work would be torture without that precious caps lock. It's called legacy.

We have shloads of function keys that people rarely use. We have recent additions like the "Windows" keys and the application key because we apparently need more modifier keys. Eventually these become useless legacy keys that continue to propagate to the next generation of computer keyboards.

Sure, get rid of the caps lock key but why stop there? Get rid of the other useless keys too. Change the letter layout to something that makes a bit more sense like Dvorak. People will complain because it does not have legacy support.

Best of luck to you though, you'll be heading down a long and painful road.

Ten years ago there were 0-day web sites that had new games often before your local software store had them. Shouldn't that have killed PC gaming?

The big thing to do with piracy is to make sure that most of the potential buyers either can't or don't want to pirate your software while not impacting the ones that do purchase it by forcing them to jump through CD-key/registration hoops or cramming system disabling copy protection down their throats.

If you want to know what could actually be killing PC gaming, look around. Hmm, besides the aforementioned copy protection issues (starforce) how about:

    1. Current games either are just more of the same (sequelitis) or just plain suck.

    2. PC hardware is far too expensive to simply play games. Contrast the price of a new video card vs. a game console.

    3. World of Warcraft has gobbled too much of the market. Sad but true. The only time some gamers are not playing WoW is on Tuesday mornings... This doesn't leave enough time to play your new releases.

    4. This one is my favorite. Some of the market has migrated away from Windows. If your product requires Windows, then I can't run it. Try launching your game with Windows, OS X, and Linux simultaneously. Or, simply focus on a Linux only release; it's not as if you couldn't just bundle it on the same frickin disc.

There are many more but these are the ones that I think the industry should focus on. Some they can do something about, some they can't. Just stop making piracy the catch all scape goat.

OK, I grabbed the first pressing NTSC-U/C (SLUS-00067) disc and poked around. It's all pretty organized and chances are that they would just use the resources and recreate/modify the code for a re-release. Here are the major groups sizes:

BIN+VAB (characters, weapons, monsters, and other stuff) - 8.9MB
BOSS (all the boss data) - 9.8MB
    SERVANT (your familiar's data) - 922kB
ST (the stage data) - 24.5MB

    Total ~ 45MB

Now for the data that could be changed a bit.
Misc system data - 2.4MB (unless they are using a PS emulator, likely this will change)
STA files (FMV for intro, ending, and logos) - 46.2MB (remember, these are already compressed)
SD/XA (audio spooled from disc during gameplay) - 391MB (this could be compressed much more)

There you go, let's assume that the compressed down to ~50MB using 64kbps WMA (ulp!) and the FMV was thrown out or at completely redone using simple 3D. One could assume that the resulting total could be kept under 100MB which is pretty manageable. Sorry that this post contains so many assumptions.

I would much rather see the prequel to SotN converted (Akumajo Dracula X Chi no Rondo) as not only would that be much smaller (28MB data exlcuding audio IIRC) but less people have had a chance to play it.
