Nowhere in my post did I mention he had to get hauled out of the ice - I said hauled out of the place, which is roughly the situation this guy is in.

I don't see anything wrong in wanting to reduce traffic in an ecologically protected area like the Antartic. I would honestly not trust a guy who does not even take sufficient contingency measures for his trip, let alone take caution in an ecologically protected area.

Why doesn't he go do something useful with his life for a change rather than tread the beaten path?

Then again, no one owns Antarctica so why shouldn't people do what they want.

Hmmm, sure go ahead. But do not expect your sorry @$$ to be hauled out of the place when you think you can jolly well do anything you please in there.

The more the number of people who come, the more the number of idiots like this guy who think, "Hey! You know what, I'll fly by Antartica today. And if something goes wrong, I always have one of them research bases to help me out. Oh come on, someone or the other would rescue me? Wouldn't they?"

I mean, come on. Its a research base. And it takes a lot of resources to get stuff in there. And people. And I would think they have better things to do than haul the sorry asses of guys like him.

However, given the nature of Slashdot crowd, a these would exactly be the kind of things would be stuff that would be around.

Hell, its not too late even now. Combine auction + Thinkgeek and you have a killer thing, something like Amazon + eBay. Do you find what you need in the auctions? If not, buy it off Thinkgeek.

True, but notice that the site says that they would have a repository containing security updates -- I'm not sure if MSFT does this for their older products.

Because if not, just because I do not update to a newer version of your OS does not mean that I should stand the risk of being r00ted. Bad idea.

But like I said in my other post, this is a whole different ballgame since in case of RH most of the customers would be organizations rather than dumbo-end users.

    Or so I think.

  10. Re:Strength of OSS. on Progeny To Offer Support For Red Hat 8.0 and 9 · · Score: 1

The difference is that most of the old stuff that MS has stopped supporting is for home/end users (like Win98).

While the kind of users who may use RH are largely a whole lot more tech savvy than those MSFT users.

This is a big difference, especially given the nature of people you would need to employ to fill these requirements (at Progeny).

Also, if you notice, the site says this -

Quotes for custom platform services are available.

Thats what interests me. I could be wrong, but I think this is a niche market that could mean more inflow of money for OSS.

In case you are wondering, CBSE is Central Board of Secondary Education, India's centralized educational panel that decides things like textbook material, testing standards etc which all affiliated institutions follow.

Ofcourse, what they have failed to mention is that the Central Board is largely unsympathetic to local langauges and hence each state has its own State Board and/or State Matriculation system.

Often, a lot of people end up either one or the other. Makes you wonder why they have been approached by CBSE and not their respective state boards.
