    easy way to certify a paper ballot register have on the edges of the roll a semirandom string of numbers (say datestamp, location number and some sort of sequence number) printed
    and then the first inch (after a leader) has the sig of the person that loaded the cart. if any problems are found you would check
    1 that the sig is still intact (and present)
    2 since the you could then check each couple inches you could detect if a set of votes had been cut out or spliced in bingo

    what would be very bad is if "they" decided to get really nasty on us

    1 make a bomb activated by scanning (with a time delay)
    2 buy parts of X as a group but never form as a group until its time
    (given 14 parts needed 4 groups each getting 4 parts..)
    3 botnet actions
    4 do a run of fake attacks and then do a real one (its not news if its number 12 in a series)

    My take is 911 can nver happen again since all it would take is 1 geek with a rigged laptop and a wing seat and minimum you depressurise the cabin max the plane goes bybe-bye

    hey chris pardon me while i clue you in its not the day thats important its the 2ish months before that is important in fact the big day in retail is Black Friday aka Hot Friday aka the day after thanksgiving (this goes to the point where Billions will be spent on ads/marketing for that day and the weekend directly after). You lose Black friday and you will be seeing red on dec 31 (and no green)

    psst you may want to get a prepaid cell phone (1 year of "lifeline service" is ~$100 with a few providers) since a recent national provider MUST BY FEDERAL LAW include a gps chip (cell version of e-911).

    what i would like to see is a "do something sane folder" where if you copy a file to it 1 if its an archive its uncompressed (with folders and top folder named for the archive file) 2 if its music move to the media folder 3 if its a known registered file move to where it belongs 4 if its a document move to folder 5 otherwise do nothing

    check out the movie "back to the future" (its a trilogy btw) basically a delorean was used to mount a time machine and 1 if the TM (called a flux capacitor) was on 2 and the car was currently traveling at 88mph+ then the car was sent to the time period displayed on the second? row of the control panel in BttF 2 Mr fusion was a power unit mounted in the delorean.

    the big problem is the difference between a third part canidate and THE THIRD PARTY CANIDATE ie if a bunch of folks gathered together and voted for say Bruce Perens (linus is nonnative and RMS is to unstable) then we might have a chance of electing him otherwise we won't have enough votes oh btw in the MR T sig insert a comma after ..in his back pocket

    umm how could something have a 10000% markup ie you buy a part for $0.005 and then turn around and sell it for $0.50 that would be 99% markup or are you saying markup exist in this field that are 99.99% ie the buy price is .01% of the sell price in which case you are way off

    They are shuttering between 400-700 corporate stores
    the big thing is most of the stores that are closing are
    1 not performing
    2 being moved (may have a shortish period between)
    and anyway with 5000 stores thats only 10% (this number does not include dealer/franchise stores)
    although i will give you that some of our PHBs are pointier than normal (and are now asking "would you likes fries with that?")
    psst btw the stores that are closing will have some "THIS STORE ONLY specials"
    i would think that if Vex lights up then ....

    and yes in this space and if you have the Contract signed if any of your bits even thinks hard about failing you will get a call from IBM stating "you have a part about to fail can we send a tech over to replace it??" i mean really the Name Of The Company is INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES dropping out the folks that have Sun Rooms what percentage of the big iron out there doesn't have IBM on it??

    actually the reason that vista launch is what 7 quarter this year? is supposedly THE WHOLE THING WAS REWRITTEN FROM EXPLORER ON UP and one of the things that was marketed is that major chunks were rewritten to use the .Net runtime (for "safety reasons"
