We were talking about this at work... a co-worker had a good take on it. It wasn't the games that killed the guy -- it was the fact he stopped and went to the bathroom.
That's the message we want users to get -- Stop playing our games and you'll die.:)

I was visiting my family last month in London -- all the cars were blowing by as I was southbound on the 401 -- and I was moving at 140 km/h. They were easily moving at 160 km/h... that road is not safe. (Erm... thats around... 80 miles an hour?)
Thank god I live in BC now, where avalanches can nail me instead of transport trailers.:)
I didn't see anyone else in this thread mention it, so I will: The test was run against W2k, not XP. I've installed both -- I have to say the process has been much streamlined in XP.
Why didn't he run the test with what a consumer would buy today?
It is my personal theory that one of the big reasons we will not be seeing a linux version of quicktime is because apple simply does not have any linux skills in-house.
Of course, you'd be wrong. Until there's a clearly defined revenue model thats profitable, you'll not see Quicktime for Linux. End of story.
Watch out my friend -- depending on the school, they may already own all works/derivatives you created while you were there. I'd seriously look into that, since sticking a GPL header in there doesn't change a thing if you didn't already have the rights to it.
I'm in the same position -- I'm a PS2 coder, and I have a say in hiring decsions.
While experience is a good thing, frankly, there's a lot of other things I'm looking at as well. You're by no means a shoe in if you lack other basic skills computer science and mathematical skills.
Looks at this as a tool, kids, but you can impress me other ways much more easily.
They're wonderful tools -- but mind you, like any other tool -- they can cause you great problems when used incorrectly. Watch your portability, and keep your code easily understood. Don't use every odd feature just for the sake of using it. Just be smart in your usage of the STL. I personally use them both in large scale projects, and think they're wonderful.
Bear in mind, you're likely to see lots of negative press in this slashdot story. Remember -- The STL's and C++'s biggest detractors tend to be those who don't understand them.
While I personally take note of programming done outside of school, or on the side in open source projects as an interest... I don't count "3 years contributing / maintaining some open source package" as 3 years of expierience. It does put you ahead of the pack if you're equal in all other respects, though. It also lets me check the quality of your work. This is always a good thing!
I know a few lead engineers in our building figure candidates have 1 year "practicle experience" for every 3 or 4 spent playng around as a hobbyist or in their own time after school / work.
concerns because they said a PS2 could be used as missile guidance systems...?
Close, but not quite. The PS2 was restricted at first because it was faster then a certian MFLOPs rating at the time -- one that would cause it to be considered a munition (crypto implications). This is the same reason Apple got away with that G4/supercomputer nonsense.
The limitation has been removed since then by the US govt.
Its historically pretty messed up. You'd think they'd be paying us to place their logos -- but in practice we (game developers) have had to pay for the right to use the logo. Thats slowly changing, though. Its harder in things like stadiums. Usually the agreement states something along the lines of we can't go placing random things. We have to approach the real owner of each logo -- and if they disagree, we can't place a competitors logo in its place.
A week's worth of data would use up 49 GB per camera. 16 cameras? 784GB.
Isn't that uncompressed? You could even get away with storing every second frame (or less), which would bring down that storage requirement substancially.
I've been using an 802.11 provider for around 12 months now. Really!
Of course, its the guy down the hall -- and he still hasn't figured it out. Seriously though, I see 3 unprotected AirPorts in my building. Actually, my provider is ADSL based, but when it flakes out, I'm only a quick switch away from... well... whatever they use.:):)
You'll find that fun physics aren't neccesarily correct physics. Granted, there's a certian coolness to having coded a correct system -- but in practice nothing (fun, at least) ships with a system like that.
Most often then not, the game is tweaked by a producer with an app that has a few sliders that allows him to change anything from gravity, to acceleration, to, well... you name it. Think about it - when was the last time you had fum driving an normal car? No way man! You want mega jumps, you want to turn on a dime... etc etc etc.
I'm a Vancouver person -- I find it odd that every single planet they visit happens to look just like Squamish, BC. :)

I have to wonder whether the license is actually enforceable.
It's American -- they have more money then you, so, likely, it'll get enforced.

Why was this posted? Totally devoid of any content.
Think of all the innocent electrons wasted!

Its a pitty you got modded up for this. Its a good candidate for the new mod catagory I'm proposing: "-1 WRONG"
I'm so out of shape... my heart hurt just reading this guy's story.
Me thinks I gotta get out a bit more.

new Doom will have images comprised of 250,000 polygons
Its a bit of a lie... but with just enough truth to not really get called by people.
What you'll see is six or more passes on a geometry that is ((number quoted) / (number of passes)) polygons in size.

If Apple would *really* like to woo game developers, they should bring Input/GameSprockets to OS X.
Sigh. No. They should face the music and license DirectX. Not a troll, just the industry reality.
The testing didn't involve compiling kernels at all.
Compiling kernels is hardly a worthwhile benchmark for all but a selet few.
I'd loathe to disqualify a compiler for that reason.
I'd like to see its performance on various 3d and crypto apps. Anyone?

and the Dreamcast was not irrelevent throughout it's entire existance.
Yes, it was. Major publishers didn't even bother producing games, because they knew Sega didn't stand a chance against Sony.
Sega stayed alive in third place for considerably more than a year.
Yes, but there were irrelevent long before that.
Just like people to moderate things they don't agree with as Flamebait.
Actually - he is affecting sales. They WILL eventually release a German version. With him doing this, people won't purchase said version.
