  3. Yep. I remember when I was under 18, and some other "under 18s" did stupid stuff (riding 4-wheeler down active railroad tracks?!?!?). Somethings you just can't get a re-do on. I figure a few "under 18s" stopped riding their 4-wheelers down the tracks....maybe....

    How the heck is this the fault of capitalism?! The alternative would be something like "Welcome to ____, where you have ONE choice, which isn't any good". Oh, and try to work any fix through the bureaucracy... If anything, capitalism might cause the manufacturer to fail against some competitor.

    If that's true, the reason may be a simple "Because we CAN charge that amount". That also means there might be an opportunity to sell that low-cost/high-quality camera...or not...

    Seems like I recall that S Africa had a nuke program (& may have exploded a device). Sanctions worked there, and S Africa has a new govt and no (known) nuclear weapons. Iran was on the way to a possible similar resolution (remember the uprising at the start of obama's term?). Instead of working through internal discontent, the US govt decided to throw them under the bus. So, Mr obama, you DID have other options. If you had taken advantage of them earlier, we might not be having this discussion now. We might even have a new ally in the Persian Gulf--one much more "civilized" than our current Arab "friends".

    My guess would be the amount of direct oversight. If you're working directly with the contractor you have a lot more surveillance activities you must do. If it's COTS (Commercial off-the-shelf), the required surveillance (& the cost associated with it) drops quite a bit.

    Reported cost is $32K/hour. If a mission is 6 hours (sounds a little long, but let's go with it), that would be 573 missions.

    Exactly. We figured that my wife, who's doing a temporary job, is paying a 40% tax rate for under $15K. What's the point in working even part time if you get stuck with that kind of tax rate on *every* *single* *dollar*? And no, I don't consider us rich (nor poor) by any means--solid middle class.

    Let me check the 'ole constitution---nope, don't see anything in there about driving. Still see pesky Amendment #2 (and #1) still there... Also, "Gun Control" folks also want to ban guns on *private* property. No state that I know of requires license to drive a car on your own land.

    loan under 3%, investments over 12%. I keep vehicles around 15-20 years, so depreciation is not meaningful. In fact the scrap value may go up it steel prices rise :-). Not everyone gets a new vehicle every 3-5 years...

    I remember several years ago when Ohio gas tax went up $0.10. The price that day went up roughly $0.15 (depending on the station).

    The parents sued the ammo dealers, and lost. If everyone who filed a stupid suit had to pay the opposing party's legal fees, a lot fewer stupid lawsuits would be clogging the system. Insurance against stupid suits (which I have to pay myself) would go down. Everybody wins! (Except for the lawyers of those who file the stupid suits.)

    I think you may have misunderstood my original comment...What I said is basically what you are saying. (My comment about the piles of sand was the (from what I heard) failed project of creating islands to sell to wealthy folks. At least a space program is something that would help other folks. I have nothing against the Emirates.)

    They'll probably contract with one of the major US/European contractors & put their flag on the rocket. Though I don't see any problem with that--they have the money, might as well do something useful with it besides build up big piles of sand in the gulf.

    If he actually did do this, wouldn't the pilot know what something had happened? Maybe it got put down as "turbulence", but I have some doubts here. Also, why would he be so stupid as to experiment on the plane he was sitting in? An "oops" here might be pretty deadly. Then again, there are idiots everywhere...
