I won't shop at Wal-Mart. I have too many choises as alternatives. Their buisness practices suck and their employee manangement is horible. I'll spend the extra 89c to shop down the street.
The *only* thing they have that I wish other places sold are the 5 quart jugs of motor oil. I hate having a bunch of 1 quart bottles around when my car takes 5 of them. Anyone know of any other place that sells oil that way? Preferably Mobil 1 Synthetic.
I don't know how Yahoo! does it- but MSN/Hotmail does not allow "admin@hotmail.com" or whatever their internal spammer address is to be added to the spam mail filter. That is anoying since I send all mail to my junk mail folder unless it is on my white list. Just because they own the system they think they can bypass my spam email checks.:) I just delete it without looking at it.
Ironicly, I just got a call from Discover on Sunday. It seems someone tried to use my number at an on-line store. They thought it was odd for two reasons. One the expiration date was wrong, and second it has been about 2 years since I have made *any* purchases with that card. They canceled the current number and are sending me a new one this week. Now I am glad I kept my phone number up to date with them when I moved... I should just cancel the darn thing.
I don't know about the airwaves but check out: FlufferTrax. It is online and on IM. He tried to get on XM and Sirus, but they are freaked out by the name.
How do you go about it? Do you send a certified letter to the software company? What kind of clauses to you add/subtract from the EULA?
It does seem like a lot of work, but if it could be cranked out as a form letter than it wouldn't be so bad. One would just need to fill out some paperwork when they buy the software, send it off, install it and move on. Unless the company does actually respond...
I know that in The Blues Brothers they shut down parts of Chicago to do the big police chase (the one with 100s of crashed cop cars) and the finale at the Daly (?) building.
They did it early Sunday mornings as to not disrupt buisness too much and not displace too many people. I would think they could do something simlar for a helicopter fly-through.
Unfortunately in the US the call comes though as "unknown caller". Typically if I see that I know it is a telemarketer, but that is not always true. If some one calls from within my office building it also comes through as "unknown". I just changed my message to say that I am screening my calls and to leave a message. They all hang up- unless it really is for me.
You can block specific calls, but not "unknown" numbers. I think that is bull. It is just convenient for the telemarketers.
This needs to be an opt-in type system. Unless I sign up you can not call me to solicit buisness or donations. I need to get my TiVo on broadband, then I can kill my land line.
Speaking of which... This weekend I got a nice form letter from my Representative in the House explaining that he understands the issues around CARP and Internet Radio, but there is no law pending so he can do nothing about it. It is a fee recommendation that the FCC is considering.
Yes, that is true. But I think the letter is almost a plea to not get any of the blame, so he can be re-elected and not suffer the penalty on being for CARP. The least he could do is send a letter to the FCC recommending they do not accept CARP because the common man, his constituents don't like it much. It is nice to get the letter, but it could have been so much more.
The reason you don't see more companies getting free of MSFT is because it was better to be part of them, then fight them.
I don't think that is completely true anymore. But, it used to be that you are either a technological/marketing target or an acquisition target, and until 2 years ago, MSFT stock was pure gold. Follow the cash, that is where the nice house and car come from.
I actually prefer the TiVo method of commerial skipping. Every so often, I will stop and replay a commerial that strikes my fancy. If it doesn't do it on fast forward, then it wouldn't do it at slow speed (with the possible exception of that Rolling Rock / sign languge one, which is witty).
Just my humble oppinion, I just wish I could get a TiVo2 without loosing my subscription and go with broadband guide downloads- so I could cancel my land line.
I must agree with you here. My stock US spec rex does 0-60 in about 5.6. That will beat 98% of the cars on the road, especially those hondas with big exaust tips, little ass wheels, and two 15" subs in the trunk. I only have 227 at the flywheel, 145ish at the wheels and can pull away from most V8s, including 5.0 and GT Mustangs, standard Camaros, and for some reason Suburbans (why they bother I just don't know). All of them have big ol' displacement and can't play the game. Now a buddy of mine has a new Camaro SS, and holy shit does that thing run...
The neat thing about their opt-in system was you got to select your interests and say you didn't want any mail for anything not listed. I just didn't select any interests. I have yet to get any opt-in mail despite being opted in:-)
I don't know though- $20 for getting email just via pop (and the large attachments, which bit me yesterday) seems, well- like a lot.
I have to disagree with your assesment of resume length. I have been told by much wiser people than I, that every resume is looked at to the end.
Don't fill it with fluff like the summer job you had in high school bagging grocieres if you are 10 years out of college. Do put all relivant information in it.
Mine is about 2 pages. If I just cross onto the third I will likely remove some old intern jobs or out-of-practive skills to bring it back to two, but if I have relivant information, I will certainly let it grow beyond that.
The one page rule was created to keep people who should not have a long resume from having one. If you have a skill set/job history that is importaint, don't leave it out just to keep to one page.
As for tools. I curently only have an HTML resume. I will probably create a LeTeX one (as mentioned elsewhere) to create a PS and maybe PDF version along with an HTML one. I think I have enough job history and skills to refuse to supply a Word based resume. At least I hope so:-)
But it is still in pre-release mode- looking at it I would say it is almost beta quality. I like the iPod, and might pick one up- but I need access to it, I hear the old style iMacs are going cheap and will run OS 10.1.
As much as it has a coolness factor recording your video stream on a computer, I just can't see it beating a stand alone unit.
TiVo just plain out rocks. I hacked it to add an 80gig drive to give me 100 hours of shitty recording, or 50ish on the good quality. It is silent, looks like it belongs with my other home theater equipment and integrates just dandy with my sat box and my cable. I can't even think of bringing a computer into my setup.
Wow, I am getting a late start here... long lunch:-)
We have begun using XML as our file storage for testplans and other documentation. We wrote a fairly strict DTD and a few style sheets. We save all the XML in CVS- yank it out, process it into HTML and run with it. We did use FrameMaker (which our doc team still does) and some odd Word docs; but we are moving from that pretty quick. For stuff you don't want to format using the style sheet, we use a CDATA block to allow HTML. It seems to work pretty well. Converting the old docs is a pain in the ass though.
The really big plus for me is that I don't have to use Windows to do my writing- despite my company being a Microsoft lap dog.
I would much rather have banner ads targeted at me geographically than demographicaly. This allows targeted advertisements without cookies and other forms of tracking. How is that a bad thing? If Papa John's Pizza has a sale here in Austin- I am more willing to click the ad than an ad for a generalized X10 ad that tries to track me everytime I view a page. Pick your battles- fight tracking not ip locating.
The only flaw with hitching IE to MSN is that in order to use IE I would need to sign up for MSN. It is similar to AOL only releasing it's version of Mozilla with new wiz-bang features in AOL. I am a big fan of the idea of completely seperate products. MSN as a product/isp; IE as a web browser; Word as a word processer... the tool should fit the job, nothing more, nothing less.
We are getting one here in Austin, TX in the next couple of weeks. There are a whole bunch of us who can't wait.
There was a rumor that when Be was selling systems that they would not put anything into it that could not be bought at Frys. That is the way to do it.
Actually in my experience, they don't use outside vendors for source control. We used SLM (pronounced slime). It's like RCS in that it locks the file tree to do work- so it doesn't allow checkouts during a checkin. This is high quality circa 93 technology:-) But it was developed in house, so it is (was?) all good.
I am a big fan of the MSFT optical mice. I have the white ones, not the gaudy silver ones. The name is IntelliMouse Optical. It is more traditional in the size, and fits well. It is a USB mouse but comes with an adapter that makes it PS/2. I have it on a KVM switch connected to 2 Win2K boxes, a ME box, and a FreeBSD box and it works like a charm. I also carry one in my laptop bag when I travel. The thing works on nearly every surface, including jeans. All of mine have lasted at least 6 months and still going (some with daily use, some with occasional).
Is there any way I can just shoot myself instead? Maybe I would just kill myself with a fork.
Couldn't you at least pick a non-slutty "woman" over Ms. Spears? Or maybe a modern era politician over a Puritan wannabe?

What I am looking for is a single DIN GPS system.
I have a WRX with an area for a gauge pod on the dash that could hold a single din unit, I saw someone had mounted a Kenwood there.
Does anyone know if such a beast exists?
