I do think it's a mistake to sell the 360 without a HD. How is little Johnny going to save his game? I'd consider a gaming system without a built in save game solution to be a doorstop, at this point

I have no intention whatsoever of buying a 360, but c'mon, this is silly - "little Johnny" will just be able to use a memory card, like the PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Cube have been doing for years with no problem.

I really fail to see how having to do that would render the system a doorstop.

  3. Re:Nintendo competing with self on Revolution? on Zelda: Twilight Princess Delayed · · Score: 1

This is a neat idea, but unlikely since this would cause market confusion with users that don't understand the difference between a Gamecube game and a Revolution game; they just know that Zelda doesn't look as good as Madden 2006 on the Xbox 360. Revolution graphics therefore aren't as good.

No doubt there are exceptions, but I would venture a guess that people who both play Madden 2006 and are worried that much about graphics...Probably would not care that much about a Zelda game in the first place.

And to be honest, if someone is dense enough that they can't read the packaging to realize what system a game is for and understand the difference, then I don't really give a damn what they think - Sony and Microsoft are already pandering to the "idiot" customers, leave it to them.

  6. Re:No Services on Boot? on Running Windows With No Services · · Score: 1

Yeah, i've had that happen myself a few times, before I turned off the automatic updating - would try to log back on w/ Remote Desktop after a sudden disconnect, not realizing that the computer had rebooted itself and gone into Linux. Obviously that's not a problem for most people (and mostly due to my laziness in not moving Windows to the top of the bootloader menu).

Even better, try doing anything like playing a game while that stupid dialog keeps coming up every twenty minutes or so, even though you've already told Windoze that you'll "reboot later."

I don't remember this ever happening - I think it was more like once a day, at the very least - but I'll give it a try this weekend sometime to see if my recollection is completely wrong.

If I tell it to reboot later and it keeps FUBARing applications by popping up a stupid dialog and seizing control of the machine like that, or just spontaneously reboots because I don't see the dialog, then it's effectively the same as a forced shutdown due to a crash.

The same end result, maybe, but it's also something that's completely preventable - you just have to remember to install updates manually.

Too, as another poster here says, I think the automatic updating and reboot is a good thing for most people.

If the roughly 2000 tech support calls i've taken during my work experience so far are any indication, most users don't even know Windows Update exists - or if they do, they'd still never use it on their own.

Have you actually played any of those "kiddie" games? Most of them are a helluva lot more fun than the piles and piles of sequels and bloody, violent "mature" games that Sony & Microsoft let grace their consoles.

All it requires to enjoy them is that you feel secure enough not to treat everything that has bright colors and/or some cutesy characters as being meant exclusively for little kids.

They won't succeed in the US unless they get HDTV support on the Revolution, which isn't in the cards.

Why? Nothing even close to a majority of US homes have televisons capable of displaying high-def content yet - A quick Google search shows figures for HDTV penetration around 4-9%, for example. By the time HDTV support is a majority, it'll be time for the next generation of consoles anyway.

People have been predicting Nintendo's doom for years now, but they're still around and actually quite profitable. I seriously doubt lack of HDTV support is going to be the issue that changes that trend.
