You live a sheltered life, doncha? There are quite a lot of people who think the government is big and greedy. They're called Republicans.
You are joking, right?
Have you been paying attention to what Pres. Bush has been doing? You'd think he had eliminated the dept of education, welfare, medicare, and social security all last year given by how conservatives seem to think that his becoming president is like the second coming of jesus. But clearly, he's done the opposite. He not only wants to make these programs bigger, he wants to make them globalized. He's even turning out to be a bigger pork barrel spender than Bill Clinton was (and that's even if you take away his "defense spending" for the WoT and Iraq).
Republican might say that government is too big and too greedy, but they contribute to its size and greediness just as much, if not more so, than the democrats.
The FCC is the primary reason why the playing field of radio is so unlevel. When you have a government entity dictating who can broadcast, where/when/what they can broadcast, you're going to have strong lobbying by corporations to have this body make policies that are favaroble to them. Hence you have insanely expensive licensing fees and stiff fines if you don't do the FCC's bidding. This can't be fixed by more regulation. Government regulation of the airwaves is what caused this problem in the first place.
If you want to restore true fairness to the radio environment, get rid of the FCC.
I'm sure you'd be happy without the state/govt.-funded roads, law&order etc., but most of us wouldn't.
how do you know that? maybe private roads would work better.
the government is not some separate being, it's just a representation of the people.
This is woefully ignorant. The government is not a representation of the people. In theory(and according to the constitution) it is supposed to be, but in practice it is not. Just take a look at the kind of shit these people legislate. The government only represents special interest groups all fighting for a piece of the government pie, which is made up of taxpayer money.
This may actually help to remove the stigma that video games 'have to be for kids since theyre video games', and allow more adult entertainment (ie gratuitous sex and violence) in video games without tons of media hype and right-wing conservatives jumping all over them and saying they're evil and destroying our youth.
wrong. These conservative right-wingers will never stop. Tipper stickers didn't stop them, a perfectly fine ratings system for video games hasn't stopped them, and already unconstitutional laws regarding movies has not stopped them. They won't stop until chrisitianity is the official religion of the U.S. and everyone goes to church on sunday. (please note here that i'm not talking about chrisitians in general, just the "esteemed" political figures like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Buchannan, the AFA, etc.)
So... rating systems may give us better games and less controversy over them. There is no hype that our youth is being corrupted with the release of each R-rated movie.
Or it could create a chilling effect that companies will not want to make games that get an "M" rating.
I'm all for store voluntarily restricting sales of 'M' games to minors. It's their right to do so.
I am against, however, using the force of government regulation to enforce any kind of rating system (movies included). It is not the business of government to decide how old someone must be to buy/see something.
the dubbing on princess mononoke was done very well. The reason dubbing on most series is terrible is because the producers just don't bother to make sure it's done well.
right... just like how RICO laws were only supposed to be used for "evil" mob bosses, and asset forfeiture was only to be used against the "evil" drug dealers, and the patriot act applies only to the "evil" terrorists.
Universal's decision might be going a little too quickly. Most people want to hold on to CDs. People love cds. If you take away CDs and replace with something else, even if you add some things to it, lots of people are going to be pissed. Consumer's do not just throw away a favored format overnight.
If i were universal, i would at least keep production of cds so that people will still have a choice. Then you can make the switch when its popular enough.
I don't believe they can without making some serious changes to the DVD format(which could cause some major headaches like the ones sorrounding copy-protected cds).
The problem is that the play prevention mechanisms lie with the dvd players and not the dvds themselves. The dvd is encrypted but there's nothing to stop it from being decrypted by, say a region 0 player or decss.
"if you're not frightened, you just aren't paying attention."
This is really no different than holding the operators of slashdot responsible for what is posted on the forums. And that they are required to keep it from happening again? Can you say "government enforced moderation"?
This is scary, Chicken shit. I suggest you wake the fuck up.

Well this so-called "Do Not Call" list doesn't execatly do what it says it will.
Let's hope AMD doesn't try to copy this...
Doesn't this patent mean AMD can't do this? (at least without paying licesnsing fees)
Maybe this isn't so bad after all... unless you really like Intel over AMD chips.
RIAA and their bribed congressmen repeatadly say that file sharing is no different than stealing.
Yet why is file sharing copyrighted works considered a felony, while going into a store and just stealing it is not?

that the game only cost about $7 million to produce
it's easy to say only $7 million when it's not your money.
I'm also wondering where is the clause that says those that are younger than 18 are second class citizens.

i wasn't talking about the china players, but rather, to the parent's comment about making dvds not play on the unlicensed AVD/DVD players

Without MS, this product wouldn't exist in the first place, so what's your point?
and this, my friend, is why the EFF enters the ballgame.
do you think they'll pass up a chance to rule the DMCA unconstitutional?
