With e-books, this is an artificial barrier that makes absolutely no sense except as life support for a dying publishing industry.
Or it is good for whomever created the work that you want to view. If I buy a copy of Microsofot Office (not that I would) it is also an artificial barrier that I dont get a milllion copies, why should a book be any different.
Another difference is that if I don't return a library book at the due date, the library doesn't send out stealth ninjas in the middle of the night to replace the book with a brick.
This is the FEATURE I like best. Most likely I have already read the book and have left it at the office or my kids have hidden it under a pile of stuffed animals in the corner as a test for me. Total additional cost to me $0.00
Now I will agree that they need more titles available this way, but once they do, you now have a 100% legitimate way to get many books 24/7 for free.
Sure if its popular you can find a torrent... but wouldn't it feel better to do it legitimately?
Opthomologist does more than just update your prescription. Think of you annual eye check-up is like a 20 point inspection on your car... If all I needed was a new prescription I might agree, but you minimize their job in doing so.
I would have agreed with you until I saw it done. Some screws go in remarkably well with a hammer... depends on the pitch. Agreed you need the screwdriver to remove, but some go in very well with a hammer.
Suggests that assuming difference on surface = difference to all underlying principles is perhaps a bad assumption.
All my e-Books are in re-flowable format that looks great on the small screen.
Sure... the PDF of the book I downloaded on Bit Torrent doesn't look great... but then again I have no rights to that do I?
And if I really want to I can convert with a numbr of apps to convert to an ebook format so the device will remember what page I am at (doesn't happen for a PDF... at least on the Kindle)
re: I guess if someone want's to borrow a book on the eReader, you would have to lend them the entire reader. That sucks!
In our area our local libraries have downloadable content... ebooks with expiry dates for certain e-readers. I actually think that is a pretty sweet wat of using DRM "for the people". This still allows me to borrow a book from the library with no possible late fees and I don't even have to go there to get it.
Admittedly selection is still lacking, but in principle it is good.
Same could be done on a personal level. Copy could be lent with a set time and then my copy gets locked during that period.
With regards to the key slot for power... fairly true of Europe as well. It is (sadly) us North Americans who are free and loose with power because it is still relatively cheap here.
Actually Lebanon uses the pound too and the same symbol too. Though frequently (for international publication) they will write it as L£ for clarity's sake
Fencing is the purchase for the purpose of re-sale (generally tried in a legitimate marketplace, which would have been impossible with this prototype.)
If I get physical access to your phone I can install something that can steal all your contact info and CC #s... How about I steal the phone, steal the info and then reset the phone and use it myself... no Rootkit required?
All the (recent) suicides were at the Apple part of the plant where workers are not allowed off campus... must be there 24/7 for Apple's privacy concerns... which apparently are not issues ith Foxcomm's Acer, Sony etc etc fabrication.
Perhaps, however if you RTFA, only the Apple workers are required (for IP reasons) to live on site. Foxconn's other workers can leave at the end of the day... Apple producing workers... not so.
All seems MOOT if our damn providers would allow us to have more than one SIM with the same essential ID. When my home phone rings, several phones ring, but I only answer one. When I need to make a call, I pick up one phone and make a call...
Why not the same with mobile phones? Why can't my laptop have a SIM and my phone use one with the same identity and on the same plan?
The problem is not with the technology, but as usual with companies that have outdated views of how SH*T should work.
The clear problem is our lack of programs to train bomb-sniffing humans. Seriously... if people can't be trained to do the same as dogs... then what is this world coming too?
Write a program to randomly post total garbage to your Twitter / Facebook etc ridiculously frequently for a few weeks. If 60 000 pages is a problem, imagine inundating them with 6 000 000 pages.
My other thought... specifically with regards to Tweets / Facebook... who archives this?
If someone offered my $1 000 000 for all my Facebook status messages I would give up in about 30 seconds. I doubt that it all exists in a reasonably indexable location if at all.
I have mine in sub-sets on quick release dealies I picked up for $2 each... my main key ring can accomodate up to 5 of these things, but I only take what I need.
Regular day to work... house and my car
Need to take wife's car, I add that one...
Walking to nearby pub... I just pull of the 2 house keys
Laws aside and IANAL (as most here) but... this seems unfair.
Imagine I am a person without access to transit (homeless, living on the edge or otherwise). I find an object. I report it to the police... and now for that act of goodwill I am required to drag my a$$ across town to drop it off.
A more fair law would be to require reporting of the find and then for Police to pick it up (at their convenience) and then for the rightful owner to pay the poliec cost for the pickup.
Call it $100. Then for the minimum $100 you (the loser... snicker) break even... but save the hassle of regenerating/recovering your data etc.
... 2560x2048 resolution doesn't exactly help me see my web pages or documents any better - in fact it can make them downright hard to see, so why do I need it?....
Just use the zoom function on your browser for that stuff. Is same size as low res monitor, but text is much easier on the eyes.
Try doing a spread sheet with more than 10 columns, and 1280 gets cramped Try doing page layout... showing 2 full pages side by side simultaneously is very helpful Watching a TV show on one side while catching up on slashdot on the other...
The list goes on and on
That said, it is easy to have multiple monitors... me I have 2x 1920x1200
In Canuckistan we have SINs (Social Insurance Numbers) not SSNs
Disagree and disagree

Now if I lose the book ... this is better still ...
I pirated World of Goo first ... then I bought it three times.
Once for PC,
Then on my Wii,
Then most recently as part of that "Pay what you want" indie bundle a few months back.

For example I run netbsd on my wife router and if the wifi interface goes down or stops working I would look in /var/log for trace information.
Your wife router ... come on ... Slashdotters are bad ... but you maried your F-ing router?
I have Kindle International (the wee one)
Why do you need to read PDF?

Small point .. but I will make it just the same.
They BOUGHT stolen property.
Fencing is the purchase for the purpose of re-sale (generally tried in a legitimate marketplace, which would have been impossible with this prototype.)
Or be forbidden from serving up search results to European IPs

What the hell ... how is this news?
Slow day on /.

Me wonders if she wasn't perhaps fiddling with said Blackberry whilst walking and that is the ultimate cause of the problem.
If you didn't click INSERT COIN, it was just a different logo like they have done 100s of other times.
Really .... depends what you do I think
Watch an online training video
Do a video conference
Use Skype for clients in far away places
That's just my top three.

Agree to basic sentiment "Carry Less Keys"

Very helpful in a work scenario.
Too much Facebooking for me ... I so wanted to "LIKE" this comment. :-(
Back to wasting my life.
