  2. Re:BIO DIESEL on Vinod Khosla Talks Ethanol · · Score: 1

first off I think BD is really cool and is definitely a better alternative than ethanol.

As far as fewer emissions, that is a simplification although it's mostly true. B100-burning engines generally produce more NOx than petro-diesel engines. This may be improved by some of the new diesel engine tech coming up but I don't know for sure. The best NOx decreases come with the BD blends (like B20) or B100+additives, but that isn't quite as cool as 100% BD. After all it's really 80% petro. Overall BD emissions are better but not universally better. Here's a nice chart (warning: PDF).

Also, ethanol technically can come from other sources than corn, it just isn't being made that way in the US. Brazil makes most (all) of theirs from sugar cane. Politics and lobbying are the only things keeping corn up front. Witness the recent sugar squabbles between the US and Mexico.

The biggest pain using BD here in MN is the low cloud point on the stuff. I'd have to hook up some kind of greasecar-style heater deal to be able to burn b100 here when it's around or below freezing (i.e. october-april). It would be great right now, though, with our 100 degree afternoons.

I suspect it's because the vast majority of us that write code at work aren't selling it to anyone. Does anyone really want an illicit copy of some data entry application I've written around here for our sales people? Probably not. How would they even get said copy? No, the only ones "buying" our software are our employers and it's not being written with the purpose that it will make money, only that it will fill a business need.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's what the poster was talking about. The systems I've seen are actual physical keys with old-school-calculator-type led displays inside. Some have a little shroud so you have to duck down and get your face right in there to see what the numbers are. I've only seen them in higher security areas (like NOC of a bank is the one that comes to mind).

My current employer uses card-only authentication for its doors, but our entrances are pretty high-volume. If everyone entering had to punch up a code we'd have a line out to the avenue to get in in the morning. I'm surprised to see we don't have those keypad deals for our data centers, though.

Donkeys are better than people." The point of the letter was that animals are getting stuck in the crossfire and nobody seems to notice. Whether it will make one bit of difference or not that they wrote the letter aside, what is wrong with that focus? Your reasoning is like that of people who say 'oh, don't give computers to Africans because they need food and water before anything else.' Ignoring the fact, for a moment, that many (most) Africans are not in the fly-ridden state Sally Struthers shows you, what is wrong with addressing a problem that may not be the main problem, e.g. animals are also being harmed by long-standing this conflict? ..isn't there usually a statute of limitations on preexisting conditions?

Not a statute of limitations per se (although it may vary from state to state), but most plans have pre-ex exclusions for anywhere from 3-12 months depending on what your employer decided when negotiating the plan with your insurance company. In many (most) cases your employer is the one calling the shots on what is covered and not covered. It would not be a waste of time to speak to the benefits administrator in your HR department to explain your condition and if there's anything they can do.

The best way to handle it if you are changing jobs or are unable to work and are let go is to investigate a COBRA option for your existing coverage until your pre-ex limitation from your new employer's plan expires. COBRA plans can be quite expensive, but they are likely less expensive than paying for treatment outright especially if your condition is as severe as you described. But in your case your window to purchase a COBRA plan is probably expired and you'll simply have to ride out the pre-ex period. There are tons of rules and most of them are not really there to help you out as I'm sure you've found out. I hope you are able to get the treatment you need covered soon.
