  1. Yet another reason to not have a Facebook account.

(or delete yours if you have one)

  2. I'm not saying Google is doing it on purpose.

What I'm saying is that Microsoft needs to look itself in the mirror (even if it was a long time ago, as the Internet (or at least I don't) doesn't forget) before it cries foul too loudly.

It's things like this that make me wonder what the technology world would have been like if Microsoft's anti-trust trial had had some REAL punishment behind it (break up, etc).

  4. Interesting! I was young(er) back then, and probably had the version that didn't have the patch.

My teacher and mentor at the time was nice about it, but was also stern in the fact that I really ought not to be doing that.

Slightly off topic, but now all those magical systems that I had (remote at least, never physically saw them) access to when I was younger (PDP's, VAXen, Alpha, mainframes, etc) I can emulate on a Raspberry Pi. Most of the time tech doesn't amaze me, but stuff like that sure does.

  5. That brings me back.

I played DOOM over IPX, on actual Ethernet, on a Novell Network.

"Shared" the folder so multiple machines could access the executables, and played multi player. On a 10Mbps hub based (not switched) network.

Brought that segment to its knees. :)

    Fun times.

  6. Agreed. The only winning move is not to play.

Never had a Facebook account, never will.

I am interested however in what kind of "shadow" data they have on me. I wonder if there is a way to request that?

Because if your code is crap .....

I do not understand how this poison is permeating these communities. Back in the day on Usenet, you got flamed, you took your lumps, perhaps apologized, and kept on posting. You learned your lesson. You didn't go cry and then subvert the community via the force of a CoC.

    100% this.

An old mentor of mine always said - "Never apologize just to mollify someone, unless it is really and truly your fault. Saying sorry admits guilt."

I don't know if the poster way above has any merit (Linus being blackmailed), but I for one think Linus should continue to be acerbic in his criticism of code and life goes on. I've read some of those flamewars. It was never about the people. Just the code. Shit code is shit code. Call a spade a spade.

I also agree that a loosely written code of conduct has too much margin for error and "interpretation". Better to shred that post haste.

In all seriousness though, what would you expect a Facebook employee to say? That they agree with Acton? That's not the way you stay on the Facebook gravy (money) train.

    Also, first post perhaps?

  24. Exactly. If I'm making $500,000 a month before taxes, I'd wait until I have (after taxes) maybe $4-5M saved, and then live off the interest.

There. Solved your stress problem. I have no sympathy either when you're raking in that kind of cash. Sure, it's work constantly creating content, but you're making BANK.

  25. They should do this to Wal-Mart also, unless the information I have regarding their employees not being paid enough and therefore having to take government benefits to get by is inaccurate. Don't just single out Amazon. Do it across the board.
