We will finally be able to forget about the 1980's style...
But I liked the 80's style. I haven't worn out my baggy denim jacket yet and my spike hanging in there as good as ever. On a sidenote, to you men with big bald spots, I've been told that a spike is one way to conceal a growing bald spot. Become a PHB now! I want my IIe back.
That's odd. I used to work in a K-12 (mother still does) and I work at a Unv now. At $2000, the discount is about $250.
I got a really good discount about 5 years ago. I signed up as an Apple's developer. At that point and time all Apple developers received steep hardware discounts. I bought a new 8600/300 w/ Applevision 1710, Color StyleWriter 4500, and a P166 PC Card (@ $826) with an incredible discount. Paid for the membership and the monitor.
In a related story: in an official press release "Speedy" Shayne Barr proclaimed he would "never use email again". This comes after Speedy was bombarded with spam from X10 Inc after purchasing an XCam2.
"I thought their popups were bad but after buying something from them, the amount of spam in my mail box has quadrupled overnight! I can't eat, I can't sleep. My children are teased at school as 'the offspring of the X-10 sucker'. We're thinking about moving to Hoboken, New Jersey and changing our family name to Clinton."
Here's at Nakes Slashdot News, we'd just like to give our condolences to the Speedy family. Our thoughts and spam are with you.

This makes me wonder about security issues. Imagine if something powerful enough to direct these microwaves at glass from a distance. Lets also say the glass is bullet proof glass. Could that shatter the glass? Perhaps it doesn't destroy the glass but compromises its integrity to the point where teflon-coated bullets can penetrate it. Interesting....
I took an Enterasys Switching cert course just under 2 years ago. The guy teaching it used to be netadmin for the Dept of Navy. He told us that they were an all Enterasys (then Cabletron) shop. I wonder if political agendas will push them away from Enterasys to, say, Cisco. It certainly happened where I work. Enterasys is a good company and they make good products. Frankly I've had fewer problems with Enterasys's professional product line than I have with Cisco's. Cisco hardware can do a whole bunch of funky things but how many people do you know that really have a need to use a proprietary Cisco protocol? I hope the Dept of Navy doesn't let politics get in the way of picking the best solution(s). I say that knowing that politics are running as rampant there as they are here though.
I've got to admit, I am have some problems with Mozilla 1.1 (final release). Recently the problems have led to instability. I was trying to buy a generator on eBay the other day. I had a search going and I opened windows to tabs as I found auctions that interested me. Mozilla kept dumping me. My box is a G4/500MP with 512 RAM running OS X 10.2.1. I've had window focus problems where I click in a Mozilla window text box but my focus is still on another window. I have to switch apps and back to regain control. The javascript driven menus on my PacketShaper 4545 web GUI still don't work. This one is really annoying. And the web GUI to the PacketShaper renders very slowly. Overall I'm pleased with Mozilla. It just needs some honing to fix some of the current problems.
Maybe delaying a release and all new features for a short time to fix existing bugs would be worth it. My $.02.
That's a good point. If the DMV handles official ID for people, there would be a reason to have it accessible to diabled persons, assuming the website contains info about the general IDs.
Good point on the flying too. ADA covers more than I remembered. There's got to be a better solution to the problem than more laws.
This is on and off topic but I see that planters warts have already been discussed, so I'll comment on them.
I had a stressful period last year. Because of that I developed some planters warts. (FYI, warts are caused by a virus. However on a healthy individual, the virus doesn't normally cause problems. Things like job problems, lack of sleep, near-death experience, etc.. raises stress levels which in turn adversely affects your immune system. Ever notice how pimples appeared right before prom when you were a kid?). I went to my family doctor to treatment when I had only 1 to deal with. I assumed I had a splinter under the skin that festered up into a ball or something. Nope. Planters wart. He said it could be cut out, burnt out, or frozen out. He recommended freezing. That's what I opted to go with. A few shots of liquid nitrogen later and I was on my way. Well it blistered, pussed up, caused more pain. Eventually the blistering went down but the wart remained. I didn't do anything about it for a while, about 4-5 months. It slowly grew. Then one day I noticed that about 4 more little bitty ones just popped up. Eww.. That's when I called my HS dermatologist. He worked miracles on me before like the case of sporo-tricosys (sp?) I developed on my elbow. He had me come in right away. He took one look at them and told me what he was going to do. He said he was going to give me shots right in the warts with a certain substance that was supposed to disolve warts. It didn't sound like fun but the original wart had grown to be about the size of a quarter, hard and crusty, and oozed puss on occasion. I bit the bullet and let him do it. He was nice enough to give me locals in each wart before proceding and to have a pretty nurse hold my ass down while he did it. He shot all of the warts (and suspect areas) full of whatever that stuff was. He also instructed me to not wash my feet for about a day. The day after that I went to take a shower. The little bastards had already turned black! The huge thing on my heal was blackish green. Cool! Anyways, the little ones slowly popped out over the course of a week or two. The skin immediately around them dried a little bit and they just fell out. The stuff inside the big one, under the hard layer of skin, turned to goo and literally oozed out one day. Made a nice green stain on my sock too. Over the next month that dead skin got harder and eventually peeled off.
I'm happy to say I'm wart-free now. Moral of the story, give a dermatologist a chance to fight skin problems BEFORE taking drastic measures like burning, cutting, or freezing. The really can work miracles some times.
Or you're the DMV and you have a website dedicated to folks wanting to get their license. What about a website for people wanting to learn to fly? The ADA laws can't be applied to everyone, can it? It just doesn't make sense.
I don't intend to sound cruel to folks that are disabled. I feel for them, really I do. However I don't believe the way to convince webmasters to design universally accesible web pages is more draconian laws. We might as well put authors and publishers in jail for not printing their books in every possible language. Our webmaster is having a horrible time designing a Unv website that complies with the ADA requirements. It's truely a nightmare. Now privately held companies are being sued because someone can't visit their website? This is not right.
I think the way to go about writing univerally readable pages is to incorporate it into W3C HTML specs. I'm not saying eliminating all the things that aren't ADA compliant like javascript and tables. I talking about bringing the standard up to speed and making sure all browsers adhere to it strictly. If all browsers adhere to the standards very strictly then no non-compliant pages can be viewed with them. There's the incentive for webmasters to stick to the standards. Why are standards such an important thing? If everyone adhered to the standards, it would be infinitely easier to build tools for people with disabilities. Audio readers could parse the pages and read them back in an easy to understand way. ADA people could do what they need/want to do without pushing draconian requirements on to the rest of us.
Like I said before, I don't mean to sound like a hardass. I just don't see how the needs of the few could justify draconian legislation. If we could adhere to a standard, it would make things easier for everyone, not just handicap persons.
My dentist has always told me that I take an incredibly high dosage of the stuff they shoot in your gums when you have cavities filled. When they pulled my wisdom teeth last year, the pulling took about 10 minutes, max. Getting me numb pushed through 2 of his other appointments. Usually he gives you some shots and goes to work on someone else and returns when he's done there. That way the shots have time to take effect. Well when he did mine, he gave me a little extra like normal. Then went on to the next person. He came back and started poking around, asking if I could feel it. I could feel it and told him. More shots. He left again. Came back. Still could feel the prodding. More shots. He left, came back. Finally it was numb enough to procede. I always have needed a lot of that stuff to get numb. He could have simply played a tape of my old english teacher talking and I would have been right out. Nope. Always wants to do it the hard way.:-)
That's funny. I've been using Sendmail for years and have never had any trouble. If all newbies gave in to the advice of those that simply don't know how to use Sendmail, Sendmail would never get used. Then again neither would Solaris or Linux.
I'm not aware of any vaguely popular blacklists that would add an IP/range on the strength of one random unknown person presenting what appeared to be a spam from that IP. That would obviously be ridiculous.
Sure there is. MAPS lists and Paul Vixie.:-) Not to rag on Paul. He's a swell guy. But if he said to list them because they're spammers, I'd believe him without a doubt.
Not to kick disabled people in the junk but ADA requirements on web sites is absolute bullshit. My state recently required it on all state-agenct websites. It's a God Damn nightmare. You can't use half the shit you used to use for web pages and be compliant. It's damned near impossible to build a useful site for a Unv that's completely ADA compatible unless plain text floats your boat. I don't know what the solution is but I DO NOT BELIEVE that ADA requirements should be forced on the Internet. Installing a wide door and a ramp in a bulding is easy. Building a website that works in the top 3 browsers on the major platforms AND be ADA compliant is just not possible IMHO.
Not if the female wildlife onboard is geek women. What we need is a geek cruise with non-geek women . :-)
