Half-Life 2 is just a game. This attitude of "gotta have it right this second" doesn't make a lot of sense to me. It's not like people are throwing their money into a pit and never seeing results, it just takes a few extra minutes, hours, or days even. Come on, go outside, smoke a cigarette, pet a cat, read a book, reload slashdot, eat a sandwich, hit on a girl (or a guy) (or both). The servers will eventually be up and running, and you'll be able to unlock the secrets of the Combine in no time flat.

In case you're wondering, I pre-ordered it over Steam and it unlocked without any issues at 3 AM PST, three hours after the unlocking began. I still couldn't play it until after I got home from work and did the dishes and scooped the cat's litter... :-)

Side one - Internet Explorer badly coded, so there's lots of vulnerabilities.

Side two - Since Internet Explorer is used so widely, there's a lot more people looking for problems with it, and the ratio of bugs found to the number of users is moderatley comparable to any other browser.

An interesting study would be a comparison between the number and kinds (garbled text to root exploit) of bugs known for each browser (what's the cut-off point? any bug from the first alpha version to the "final" version? Or just for the current revision?) versus the number of approximate users.

On the consumer side... there are no pop-up ads, or other commercial intrusions, to get in the way of communicating. America Online executives fear that charging consumers for basic IM use, which they are not considering, or loading the service with ads and promotions could drive people to use the services offered by Microsoft and Yahoo.
I'd personally be interested in paying a small fee to get a customizable official version of AOL Instant Messanger per month, maybe $1/mo with corporate features. I understand that there are alternatives available at this time, but a legal no-ad version (as opposed to the hacks that remove the banner from the official client) with secure messaging (assuming the other party also had the secure edition) would be something that I would consider investing in.

This is nothing new. Critical Update Notification has been around for quite a while, and not just for XP.

    Windows Critical Update Notification 3.0

Download this component and never miss a Critical Update again. Whenever a new Critical Fix is released, you will be notified. Microsoft has improved Windows Critical Update Notification by adding a feature which allows this component to update itself as improvements and new features become available.

Critical Update Notification is the best way to keep your computer up-to-date and protected from potential security issues affecting Microsoft Windows. Download this component, and the next time you are connected to the Internet you will be notified of any critical updates to Windows that are available for your system. You can choose to download the update right away or postpone downloading until a more convenient time.

When you install Critical Update Notification, you give Windows Update permission to scan your computer (much like the scan performed by the Product Updates catalog). The scan, which occurs in the background while you are using the Internet, determines if the available update is appropriate for your system. Task Scheduler controls the scanning schedule, so you'll see a task for Critical Update Notification among your other scheduled tasks. The scanning schedule is preset and Microsoft recommends that you do not modify the settings. You won't be notified of every scan, the scans won't interfere with your Internet computing, and none of the information gathered is sent to Microsoft or sent over the Internet.
