    Does it play well with Tabbrowser extension?

    Usually any app that does this kills off my saved session. (grrrr).

    Here's hoping.

    And, isn't msi support supposed to be available?

    Was firewire a mistake?

    Or is this just a case of superior numbers vs superior tech? (a whole win vs mac thing again, eh?).

    Heck most of the *ell 650's I've got have F/W and recently USB 2.0 on the newest. Even got a scsi/firewire scanner a while back, and makes me wonder if firewire will suffer the fate of scsi:
    Mo' faster, mo' better, but more expensive than the alternative and not as pervasive as the "cheaper" stuff.

    TFA mentions that usb 1.1 can't charge the iPod, does usb2.0? Or is there a seperate chager that's not mentioned?

    Just asking, because the whole article brings about a "Huh, I'll be darned".

    WMP is not really a problem if you use Media Player Classic, but some of the .wmv/wma's just wont work right in MPC. Ah, well.

    (After thought: Everything above 6.4 is just a front end for 6.4, IIRC, and all the interfaces just plain suck. Oddly, even tho WMP6.4 is doing all the work, with out the "front end" some files won't work. Stupid, slimy, underhanded and complete BS, IMO).

    The real problem for me at least is this:
    Outlook Express needs to go, period. No exe's, dll's, ocx's or setup files at all. no shortcuts, or slimy reg entries that install the moment you look away.

    (pause)

    And NO more FSCKING IE updates that put all that crap back if you want it or not. No, nein, nada, nill, null...fscking stop it already.

    And after that particular virus infection is removed, lets start with:
    The animated dog....no more of this crap.
    Show extensions by default.
    MSN Messenger...I don't want it, ever. Remove every scrap of this PoS.
    Messenger service...Ummm..manual by default.
    Wireless service...you'd think they'd enable it if a wireless card were present...not by default.
    Network over Firewire. Ok, neat idea, but it fucks with domain logons, but you can't uninstall it with out uninstalling all other things network.

    Or, hell, I've said it myself: "FSCK IT, I'm going back to 2K, it just works and I'm sick of XP ".

    Now that the EU is more bold, take it a step or two further. Start hacking out the crap, and unintegrating components...and you never know, Windows might actually be securable at some point.

    Well, one can hope/dream.

    In essence, it's true, perhaps because it is "a male mindset", but still I found it funny.

    Perhaps, most insightful and direct was the character 'Ian Malcom' in "Jurassic Park":
    You *can't* just supress millions of years of evolution (and gut instinct?).

    Nature plays a large part, but a lot of people fail to realize it is not an either/or of nature vs nuture, but both.

    Funny when I think about it now, that's the one Tron toy I don't recall coming out, or I never got a chance to get one for some reason.

    A single button sync after you set your sync prefs thru the file - offline - download/sync menu.

    Seriously, once set, I usually don't change it, but it is rather annoying to traverse the menu when a single click on a button could be done.

    Of course why would I sync "often"?

    I leave my mail client at work on all the time and when at home, a sync will bring up mail that's been filtered.

    Works well for me, save for the .7 release which would bomb after a few days, but the .8 moox build has gone 60+ days w/o a hiccup. (had to reboot after ultravnc rc11 uninstall...ah, well)

    Minor note: TB .3 and above have been very good, if not excellent mail clients, but I'd like to have the news reader ripped out, or emulate agent/free agent, other wise I couldn't care less if TB had a news reader.

    I agree so much with this statement, but must tilt at windmills yet again:

    Look at the find bar and now the plugin bar.

    Just when I thought I'd get used to the find bar, it turns out to be the biggest POS for yet another reason and should never have been implemented over find as you type.

    Two big reasons: trying to type in a command line syntax, in a text box with a "/" or a " ' " and the find bar pops up with FAYT disabled.

    What...the...fuck!?

    (and, drumroll please: you can't get rid of the find bar because it is not an EXTENSION)

    The plugin bar, that annoying GD bar that pops up telling me I don't have flash ever 10 seconds, to serve even more ads, can be turned off with the about:config route. (forget the setting, ATM)

    However it took 30 minutes of digging thru the mozilla forums to find that one.

    Whoever implemented the find bar as part of the browser now, needs a swift kick in the nuts for putting in one of the biggest mistakes in browser history, second only to integrating the browser into an OS.

    To him/her, I say, as you did, this: Go make an extension. and include (fscking moron)

    No One Lives Forever one and two had some great gags:

    My personal favorite was chasing the midget mime on the unicycle, and Kate (you, the player) and Armstrong (muscle bound Scottsman) on a tricycle.

    Mime ducks into an alley, and Armstrong says, "Hang on, sharp turn!" (with the wheels of the tricycle squeaking the whole time).

    I had to pause for 15 minutes, I was laughing so hard I was crying.

    Best guffaw, was the intro to the Morocco level:
    Your contact is killed by the Mime/assasin, and you and Armstrong have to split up:
    Kate: But how will I find you?
    Armstrong: It's not like I blend in!.

    Those were from NOLF2, the ending (spoilers ahead) of NOLF1 had the classic exchange:

    Kate: Where were you?
    Armstrong: I was shot!
    Kate: I took care of an entire super-soldier invasion, and all you had to do was take care of a limp-wristed mommies boy with a target pistol.
    Armstrong: I told you, I was shot!
    Kate: Oooo, poor baby!
    Armstrong: Don't you mock me, woman. Besides, it sting.

    (I think that's how it went).

    But, Xbox games are going to make the Mac better at gaming.

    I dunno, because as a fan of the thief series, the xbox port of thief 3 killed off all enjoyment.

    Graphically stunning, yes, but the ability to draw you into the character and levels was ruined.

    The dumbed down controls (lockpicking the exception) smoothness (a character you are about to blackjack stiffens as if expecting it and pickpocketing only happens if you can hit *one* pixel on a moving target..uh-huh).

    On the other hand look at Doom3, Descent3, quake3, Oni and a whole slew of others: They rocked, IMO.
    Except for Doom3 (not tried yet) all the others were very playable on a g4 400 with little or no difference in the port.

    So, yeah, I agree that: Xbox games are often water down versions of their PC cousins. and look what happens on Xbox first games, vs mac pc ports.

    IME/O, that is.

    I figure this would be the best place to ask, so:

    I've got a friend with hotmail account, and a one with a yahoo account, and I've invited both to gmail.

    I'm sure the first question I'll hear is "How do I get my mail off X service onto gmail easily?".

    Anyone out there care to clue me in if this is possible?

    Agreed.

    I've got a lab that I admin of 2k/xp machines for GIS and as an added bonus users that are *adults* and rarely descend into luserdom.

    Just a quick glance around the lab and I see all but a few have 40+ days of uptime since the last major power outage (3+ hours).

    Of course, the PDC is a samba box that despite playing with DNS has been running like a champ for 61 days and the Netapp box for 62 (not sure how that worked out).

    All in all the users and admins make a difference, as do the applications in addition to windows itself.

    Observe:
    GIS apps that in NT4 would *improve* stability (no, I'm not kidding).
    Firefox, Thunderbird and a dash of Mozilla.
    IE reserved for flash/hotmail.
    Users who don't act like lusers.
    SUS server does not hurt either.
    Neither does NAV corp.
    Linux at the heart of the operation.

    Honestly, anyone who wants to know what *idiocy* is out there, hit http://chroniclesofgeorge.nanc.com/board/ and the war stories section, search for "johnny_bravo".

    Damn, makes me glad for the place I've got.

    In a word: Bullshit.

    I plugged in a USB key that had no problems with 2k/xp, but once I plugged it into a fully updated 98se box and it asks for a driver disk on floppy.

    Considering 95/a had no usb support, 95b had "dos mode" usb if you were lucky, 95c was slightly less of a joke, 98 was so-so and NT4 was a not-a-chance-in hell without a 3rd party and still a "maybe works".

    Remember the "Death Of The Floppy" article yesterday (IIRC)...some installs *INSIST* on a floppy.

    I honestly don't think the guy ever had to deal with USB on anything other than 2k/xp, because most devices had "support", but almost always device specific drivers were needed.

    (Oh, yeah, I neglected WinME because it only took my boss 1.5 weeks before deciding it was a PoS and going back to 98se for a VOIP phone's software)

    Don't know if the full functionality is there, haven't tested it yet, but the Firefox extension seems to work quite well.

    The Thunderbird extension is a different story, because the extension system does not seem to be in place. I followed the directions to go to tools -> options -> extensions button, and there is no extensions button. :(

    A failing of Thunderbird 0.7.3, it seems, maybe it is in the nightlies, dunno.

    All I can say is: If Sunbird follows the kick-ass nature of Firefox/Tbird, this seperate "suite" is going to be perfect, IMO.

    Heck, Firefox fixed (read: got rid of) the find toolbar, and Thunderbird would be perfect if they added a "Sync" button to avoid the File -> offline -> download/sync -> press enter if setup, but remember it only is available if you've clicked on your PRIMARY ACCOUNT/Folders.

    Arugh!
    Yet more clicking and re-accessing the menu.

    C'mon guys (and gals) I LIKE buttons that make life easier.

    Heck, I like blinky lights and shiney objects, too!

    I'm just glad the got rid of that damn "find toolbar".

    Dear $deity in heaven, why would they screw up a perfectly good feature like find as you type?

    Insult to injury was when typing in passwords to my Novell server, the new find bar proudly displayed my password in plain view. Thank the same $deity no one was around, and my monitor faces a wall.

    Why didn't they just add a Clippy type character that can speak through the voice software in windows:
    "It looks like you are typing in "$password" as your password, would you like some help typing in your passwords?"

    Whoever thought that find bar up deserves 10 lashes with a cat5 o' 9 tails.

    I agree and you said it well with:

    The reason given for this is novice users, who don't know where to put their files. they rely on their default program settings and just dump their files anywhere and then complain when they cannot find them.


    As far as keeping things in order, well, wasn't that the point of the whole "My Documents", "my pics", "my pr0n" folders and such?

    First Microsoft want us to use these folders, so much so that they embedded these folders into the OS and most you can't delete (Outlook express, for instance).

    Now Microsoft wants drives to become a dumping ground for files and we have to search all the time?

    Seems kinda silly, IMO.
