...anyone has written or thought about writing a wordprocessor that uses plain old HTML/CSS (when/if needed)?
If you think about it, plain text and RTF are quite nice, standards wise, but what has the "best" support world wide for exchanging/distributing information?
That's right...HTML, and for the exacting people; CSS.
Think about it...bullets, colors, fonts, images and all that stuff...just like a word processor.
The only "request", I'd like to see is clean code, not the generation/defacation of HTML that Word, Wordperfect, and to a lesser extent (IIRC) OO/SO.
Thank you MS for yet another non-uninstallable, non-disableable useless service for me to worry about.
Bingo and Agreed
I just *recently* migrated my lab to 2k (GIS Apps, no way to avoid it at all....yet) and have been testing XP (just the OS).
OH...MY...FSCKING....GOD that OS annoys the piss out of me.
You know the old delete all the "HIDE" instances from sysoc.inf? Does not always work even with system restore turned off...just **TRY** to get rid of automatic updates... I DARE you.
Won't happen, nor have I found a way... yet.
And in addition to "non-uninstallable and non-deletable" you also seem to get every single piece of shit^H^H^H^Hflotsam and jetsam imaginable, including the kitchen sink...turn ON. GRRRRRR!!!!
My neck muscle started twinging after seeing all the *CRAP* I have to turn off...again!!! (It's also sad, that I just recalled the "setup a user account and then copy it to the 'default user' profile...)
Oye...when an OS's bullshit gets so high and stinky you forget the basic stuff...man, oh, man.
And to think I took the sys admin job with the thought "yeah, I could be happy being a NT reboot monkey for $pay/year"...
I once worked for a company that was able to charge a lot of money for an adequate product. There was no competition, so we could pretty much name our price.
Hummm... until you mentioned competition from the Asian market, I was thinking of three letters:
G I S
Funny that even the slightest competition has been assimilated, heck, even the two "powerhouses" have been in such an incestuous relationship for the sake of compatibility, is interesting.
What's even stranger is that support for Sun is dwindiling down to nothing, but interest in other unicies is increasing (Linux and OS X) to an heightening pitch.
And this is from the "decision makers", as it were, who want *alternatives*, free or not.
One GIS shop's boss said if there was improvements to GRASS (Low level, free?, GIS software) on the OSX side, he'd move in a *heartbeat*)
My boss actually uttered the words "I wish we could sue Microsoft" after the blaster worm...DESPITE our lab being unaffected. It was the *other* places we do business with that were paralyzed because, well, Windows dominates the market.
What's this got to do with Be?
A lot, if you consider what a great product it is/was, but they weren't ready, IMO.
First, lack of drivers and software beyond a specific set. 4.5 was limited to a specific set of hardware on the Intel side. 5 was better in general, but audio/video/cd burning and such needed at least *base functionality* (think OSX/XP...ain't pretty, but it works 'ok')
Second, was a damned if you do, damned if you don't conundrum because you have to get the word out, but you don't wan't to show up on Microsoft's radar. hummm, how do you do that?
Linux did. By starting small, building momentum, stability, drivers, support, etc...by the time it was "seen" it can't be stopped (per se) but it can have its course altered (SCO, anyone?).
Yellowtab seems to be on the right track, as I've been watching with interest, and the project is progressing, gathering support(ers), and being open source (IIRC) doesn't hurt either.
That said, I'll miss BeOS and the way it made an old P200 sing.
all the competitors, even the free ones, can't muster ten percent combined. If the _real_ OS choices for most people are W2k, XP and coming sometime this decade
An excellent point, and as one AC mentioned above about the blaster worm.
Here's what I see: Leverage. Plain and simple.
Here's what I *think* the message is: "We have a way out" or "We want a way out".
Wasn't it China that brought about its own linux distro?
Wasn't it also China that Microsoft showed its source to when rumblings of this nature surfaced about 6 months ago?
Didn't Craig Mundie (sp?) testify under oath that there are flaws in MS Windows so bad they could threaten national security?
Imagine if Blaster were better written, to infect, reboot once, and be stealthy with a payload. And nobody would notice until....when/what? {shudder}
This trio is trying to get out of the "pit" that is Microsoft products, and what is our own Homeland Security Office doing?
That's right...digging themselves deeper.
Be American, Buy American...as the old slogan went.
Guess what they're doing? Yep, fending for themselves as best they can, in the best way they can, by being self reliant.
Mr. President; did you have any knowledge of the illegal import of mallocs into SGI?
(best Ronald Reagan voice:) Response: I can't remember/I don't recall.
Hehehe...
(Side note: IMO, Reagan was one of the better Presidents in my lifetime/recollection. That's why I think Aaahnold will do well in California/Politics).
Instead of 'If you drop this box on a dog, don't trip over its tail'.

Hi! Welcome to Slashdot/state or fed gov't/.edu/corp....you must be new here.
We need less computer users anyway.
Hummm...I'm honestly torn between agreeing with you and not...so many reasons (the stock of alcohol I have now because of blaster is quite large) Ok, I agr...err...I'll drink to that!
We can go back to good old BBSing and a USENET free of assholes.
USENET free of assholes? I thought it was comprised of assholes... where else does all that good/bad/indifferent shit come from?
Miiiiister Anderson (TM) (pause) You're back. (pause+snarl) We..missed you.
Aaahahahahaha...oh, shit I gotta see this movie.
I later drove that phrase into the ground, almost.
On a more serious note, there was a matrix site where one poster postulated that "the machines didn't win".
Anyone else read that? It took into account the two movies, game, and Animatrix (didn't play the game so couldn't comment on that aspect).
After seeing Reloaded again, well, the idea had merit, but diminished because something didn't seem right (ok, "Like a splinter in my mind...driving me mad"...ok, ok, 'short trip' I hear you say).
I think it was the disabling of the Sentinals and then slipping into a coma that was a "wait a minute" moment...an it just hit me a second ago:
*Assume* it was correct, that the machines didn't win...could it be the humans (matrix) are the machines (real) trying to break out and the machines (matrix) are the humans (real)?
no mention of Media Player Classic. (original site is "under construction" so google it)
ffdshow (use the alpha above 10-10-02) has been mentioned, good.
don't forget http://betas.intercom.net/ and snag "Real Alternative" "Quicktime Alternative" and "K-lite Codec pack"...these should take care of all your video needs and playback is excellent. (The QTA + MPC plays QT (mov) files better than QT itself. Of course that isn't saying much, as QT on a PC is shite).
If you can't find MPC by itself, it is IIRC, in the k-lite full.
I seriously dunno what happened to Divxpro after 5.03 but I was not impressed at all...trying to brighten up the picture with out burning my retinas out was impossible...with ffdshow, just right click in MPC, options, ffdshow and you have various fine grained options (just remember to check the box for the filter..doh!).
The level of control that ffdshow gives over divx5 is by far and away the deal breaker especailly for those of us w/o the latest and greatest CPU (dual 450@504 AGP TNT2 and dual 500 with PCI GF4 440Mx).
One word of warning for ppl with XP: to have MPC take over mov/avi files you have to fire up WMP9(?) and uncheck the DVD file type at the very least...does not make sense, I know at it drove me nuts for almost an hour. (BTW, No "set program access and defaults *DOES NOT WORK*...at all).
The open source community needs to buy them (hell, everybody throw in a dollar) and then throw open their "intellectual property" completely free to the world.
No, no, no, no, NO!
This would be the code equivalent of the "Love Canal".

Wheels suck.
I beg to differ. See above.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go towel off after all that dripping sarcasm.
SCO's defense has been that it must actively and not inadvertently release proprietary code as open-source software. "It requires them to take the position they didn't know what they were selling, which depending on your point of view is a hard argument to make. You would tend to think you'd know what you're selling," Osterman said.
Ya Think?
I'm sorry your honour, I thought I was selling the pixie stick dust, not rat poision.
Oh, yeah, I gotta ask: "Was I the only one who said 'Woooohooo' out loud?".
If kazaa shares by default (a dir, drive, or whatever) is the RIAA just going after *specific* IP's of "Joe/Jane Sixpack and or their kids", while avoiding IP's that resolve to names like, oh say, Kennedy, Gates, Bush, Ashcroft and such?
I also seem to recall John Stossel (20/20) interviewing an RIAA exec, asking if they'd do exactly what they are doing now.
Stossel even admitted (to the exec) his daughter (IIRC) downloads/trades/shares music...and "are they going to sue her/him".
The answer was "YES", I believe.
Now putting these two things in context, isn't this kind of profiling illegal? (IANAL, just curious).
Think of it this way. Band B steals some lyrics from Band A. Does this give the world the right to steal all of Band B's music because their copyrights are somehow invalid now? No.
Good point, but "Don't tell my heart, my achin' breakin' heart"...which was swiped, IIRC, and changed to Achey-breakey...and later ruled by a judged to be a different song.
