  1. SOYO VOIP Phone on VOIP Meets Cell Phones · · Score: 1

Take a look at this phone:

It's a VOIP phone from SOYO that allows free direct calls between same model phones. They also provide an international calling plan but I don't think I will be interested in that.

I bought two G668 models and I intend to place one in my parent's place (they live abroad) and one besides my regular telephone. That way it will work as a family "bat-phone" and reduce our long distance charges to zero.

Two great advantages are that they don't need to get connected to a computer and they can make AND receive calls. These phones have their own number when used within the "Network".

I expect to recuperate the cost in two months!

/You have to understand that my parents are technophobes, with this they can just pick up the phone and dial a number

//All my international calls go to family and friends, if this works I will be giving more phones for christmas next year!

  2. Audit friendly machines on Buggy Voting Machines · · Score: 2, Interesting

I followed the problems with these machines on the news and apparently one of the most important problems is that there isn't a way to verify the vote count on each machine. These machines have a function where they print the total votes cast and that's it. No audit trial.

Why can't they attach a printer to each machine where the voter will see a paper ballot being printed at the same time he/she submitted their vote on the screen? They will hava a last chance to see their vote before it is automatically dropped into a see through box.
If there was a problem with an individual vote the person will call for assistance immediately and with a proper procedure in place, the vote could either be cancelled or approved. ... And at the end of the day if for some reason there is a problem with the voting machines you can always go back to the transparent ballot boxes and count each individual vote all over again.

    Makes sense?

/obviously this calls for a reliable printer mechanism, like the ones with see on ATMs or Cash Machines, at least!

    Hope this helps.

It was common to show clients how IBM was ussing their own products and suggest what a prototypical business operation should look like.

Now if they don't even support their own products that's quite a blow to their own reputation. For IBM reputation matters when dealing w/big business clients.

I think what they have to do is evolve Lotus (rebrand it?) and plan a graceful exit. And in that way offer the appearance of supporting and planning for their customers.

This is a late reply, don't know if it will get thru.

After reading all the threads related to India, offshoring and IT Trends I've come to these conclusions:
    • The US will still be the biggest economy in the world, inevitably creating demand for services more than anything.
    • Offshoring to India is no panacea, some highly critical design tasks can simply not be done offshore because of the need to keep in constant communication with clients or whoever is requesting/issuing requirements.
    • India itself is finally growing economically and has a potential huge need for IT services in the future, thus reducing the number of IT developers to work on foreign projects.
    • Also, good Indian programmers (or from any country!!) are not that plentiful and they will demand higher salaries (either in India or moving to the US) thus leaving the "average" programmers to deal with huge quality issues.

So, for any programmer, he/she should focus in the following:
    • Focus on skills that are needed by medium to large organizations (including state or federal governments). Don't go first to your small business or municipal government, those are very unstable environments economically speaking, use them as your last option.
    • Focus on (for example) Java, C#, PHP. Java is my preference since it has established itself in corporate environments. What ever you choose make an effort to certify yourself. Is just another business card, it will not make you proficient in that language but it will help you cover all the basic knowledge.
    • Large corporate organizations use Oracle. This is almost a rule. Make sure you start using it and if possible make it your second certification. SQL Server is a close second. For medium organizations anything goes, from propietary (Oracle Microsoft) to open source (PostgreSQL, MySQL).
    • Is almost certain that web enabling projects will be the rule in the coming years. Despite the .com burst, governments and businesses are realizing the need to share information online. Make sure you brush up on your skills of SOAP and Web Services. You don't have to code them by hand, look for tools that will help you build the interfaces (i.e. Apache Axis).

And of course keep reading Slashdot!!
