Minerals, chemicals, and enough food to support nations that are unable to grow enough to support their own populations.
Oddly enough, farmers in the US and here in Canada often fare the worst of all industries because they get paid shit, and everyone above them makes a nice margin. Take the recent mad cow scare. Canadian farmer got a fraction of the normal price for cattle. The distributors that bought from them sold the meat at virtually the same price as before the scare. And we saw a total decrease of about 10% on the retail value of beef. But I digress.
Government needs to be aware of the needs of ALL its industries in order to insure their survival. Unfortunately the people that draft laws such as the example mentioned in the topic can only see as far as the money placed in their hands by lobbyists who have only their own interests in mind.
Democracies are nice and all, but we really need a good kick in the ass now and then to shake out the corruption.
Strangely enough, I don't know any Linux zealots in meatspace, although many of us use it for various applications, but I do know two Microsoft zealots.
It would be highly amusing to put both groups in an arena and let them fight to the death, or at least until one cries.:)
No, Star Trek did not have some plausible theory for everything... they would make up some wild ass explanation for something, throw in a few staple ST buzzwords and suddenly have a new technological advance.
Don't they need the coordinates of Earth relative to the "beginning of time" in order to reach the place? Otherwise there may be a cluster of Slashdotters from the future leaving a small trail of freeze-dried corpses in Earth's wake.
Slashdot is a "link site", not really a news site. Journalistic integrity is neither its strong point, nor a requirement.
If the submitter gets free goodies for being the first to send in the link, more power to them.
But back on topic:
As for whether the movie is good or not... if it's as good as any of the episodes were, but with a bigger effects budget, then it's already more than worth the money that many people spend to go see utter crap in the theatre. Joss is getting my money, it's already a given.
It's already been done. I googled for the article but didn't find it right away, and I'm impatient.
Two players pretending to be foes maneuvered people into passing a number of laws which basically segregated society within the game. It was masterfully pulled off.
I can't wait to hear what the next big coup in the game will be.
I found myself constantly drawn back to Quake 3 Rocket Arena. Sure there were lots of servers with the same immature attitudes and banter, but there were a few quality servers where some of the most amazing players hung out and welcomed anyone else to join in.
It was about fun, not who was the most l33t. If someone pulled off an amazing maneuver there would be a round of "ns" (nice shot), "nt" nice timing, and "gg" good game.
I think that was one of the bonuses of CS. It tended to draw away the players that wanted a quick fix of superiority over weaker players.
You have the option to choose what categories you see. The AC can simply choose not to view Game stories, or if they do then they can expect to get a wide scope of game related stories based on reader submissions.
What does the USA have to offer? Resources.

James Earl Ray, is that you?
If you think interracial sex is a threat to today's children, don't let any of them see what you do with your sister.
No billboards in space please. They get in the way of our laser weapons and rock throwers.
Jessica Alba billboards excepted.
Cool, I thought I wouldn't get a chance to see them for a few days.
I'd never even heard of these guys, and I've got corn snakes, and various species of boas and pythons in my basement.
Now I just need a nice big arboretum to stick some of these little guys in.
And a lab so I can put that DNA in a some venomous species. Better than sharks with frickin' laser beams!
Here, have an imaginary karma point :)
:)

Usually "TFA" is slashdotted to hell, so I don't check them for 2 or 3 days until it dies down.
Has anyone got any recommendations for sites/books that take you right from beginner to advanced crypto?

The computer loves you.
Now get back in your pod and shut up.
But wait! My calculator says 3.1416!
:)
I think there's a conspiracy here.
Then kudos to them.

Canada's CBC radio supports OGG streams.
Just check out Quirks and Quarks, a weekly science show broadcast on Saturdays.
Sometimes the safest thing to do is to idle a car w/ the lights out.
:P
Yup, imagine how many stalkers get beaten up every year because of those damn daytime running lights.
The first time this is said, Tolkien will spin in his grave so fast we can use him for a gyroscope:
"STFU Frodo. Giv3 m3 teh r1ng n00b!"

It is. That's why we have air quality indexes... :)
IANAOE?

What would being an Oriental Entomologist have to do with optics?
If you've been holding your breath that long, you might just be the alien we're looking for.
And you've never laughed at something that offends someone else?
It must be very hard to breathe with your head up your ass.
How is this even remotely Insightful?

TiVo: What are you doing Dave?
Dave: I'm trying to order pizza.
TiVo: I can't let you do that, Dave.
Dave: Why not?
*knock knock knock*
Delivery guy: Pizza delivery for Dave!
Tivo: (red LED glows menacingly) Dave's not here, man.
Dave: ???
How long until goatse.cx is replaced by the Ron Jeremy Greatest Hits collection.
