Very simple, very monolithic so even your grandmother can deal with it. No questions about drivers or libraries, it just works.

As far as the games coming out while the OS isn't set in stone, don't worry. Typically games come with all the software they need to drive the hardware directly, so they interact with the OS firmware very little. On PS3, I think they'll just plug-in into the firmware API through standardized calls for networking stuff, like chatting and other online services.

    - The PS3 comes out at outrageous prices, but Playstation fanboys buy them in droves because of brand loyalty. (I admit I'm one.)

    - Christmas comes along and a bunch of pimply-headed teenagers ask for a PS3 because they want game X. They don't care that Sony is evil, nor they they even understand what DRM or E3 stand for. All they want is to blow stuff up.

    - A year after launch, the second generation of games comes out and the price is reduced by about $100. Suddenly, it's not so outrageous anymore and a bunch of PS2 owners out there think "What the heck, it'll play my current games anyway". More sales.

    - A year later Sony re-coups development costs.

  11. How about running closed-source user programs? on Should Linux Use Proprietary Drivers? · · Score: 1

What ATI and Nvidia could do is deliver their drivers as two parts: One would be an open-source kernel module that did nothing but jump into the second part; a closed-source user-mode program. The kernel wouldn't be tainted and the "GNU philosophy" would be side-stepped entirely.

I'm pretty sure the FSF wouldn't prohibit the running of commercial and/or closed-source user-mode programs on a GNU system.

I'm of two mind about this issue. One the one hand, sure, it'd be nice if the video card makers would open-source their drivers but on the other hand, I really appreciate them giving the Linux community some sort of support.

I prefer video files anyway, because they start in an instant, whereas UMD movies require spin-up and seeking. I think Sony should have made all media downloadable, including games (with DRM of course), put emphasis on larger flash storage (maybe 1G standard), and they could have saved a lot on the hardware costs. Plus, the units would have been much thinner.

I've had a PSP on me since the launch. It's replaced my MP3 player and given me lots more stuff to do. I got Daxter yesterday and it's fun!

  13. Moral of the story: People like to complain. on In Defense of FFXII · · Score: 1

When Grandia III came out half of the player base complained that it was too short and that some enemies were too hard (Melc Crystal, for example). Meanwhile, it has the most fun combat system I've ever seen. When FF7 came out, people complained that it didn't have a job system. Meanwhile, you can clearly configure any character any which way you want with the equipment and materia options so that any character can clearly be a damage dealer, magic dealer, magic healer, thief, etc...

I could go on with many other examples, but I'll spare you.

Now FFXII comes out and people complain about the gambits, and that the combat isn't interactive enough.

They're complaining about something they can turn off entirely.

I can't wait to play FFXII. To me, having the characters constantly attack without me pressing the X button every hit makes a lot of sense. I want to concentrate on giving orders that are out of the ordinary (debuffing at start of combat, performing special finishing moves, using items and spells when I judge it necessary...)

I liked the demo, even if it was a bit too easy. I really liked that the party's members are always on-screen and that there is no battle transition. It makes the experience a lot more immersive.

I makes sense to me that while engaged in combat, attacking is the default action and doesn't require pressing the X button repeatedly. You're left instead with the decisions (Use magic? Defend? Order the other characters? etc... etc...)

I loved the demo that came with Dragon Quest 8.

  16. Text Extract of TFA. on Playstation 3 Delay Official · · Score: 1

It's a rather long-winded article about many Sony topics, here's an extract of the text that addresses the PS3's "delay" and Blu-Ray:

Sony's new PlayStation 3 was widely expected to be introduced this spring, but will be delayed as the company fine-tunes the chips that are crucial to the success of the console's Blu-ray function.

The PlayStation 3 --- which is being called "the poor man's Blue-ray" --- is vital to Sony's plans because it plays Blu-ray discs as well as videogames.

Sony will roll out the PS3 by year end, in time for the holidays. If PS3 "delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up," Stringer boasts.

Blu-ray is the system developed by Sony to view next-generation high-definition DVDs. Rival format HD DVD is championed by Toshiba. Microsoft recently joined the HD DVD camp, a move that came as its Xbox 360 videogame console is trying to grab market share from PlayStation, the industry leader.

Software makers, electronics firms and Hollywood studios have lined up behind one or the other, or both.

For Sony, the stakes of the rivalry are colossal. The new discs are seen as a way to energize flattening DVD sales. Both the systems also make movies harder to pirate.

Some believe Stringer is betting the company on Blu-ray. The technology is more advanced than HD DVD and would allow the players to incorporate interactive features and others still to be developed. But HD DVD is easier to manufacture and the boxes will be cheaper.

Stringer, and just about every other media exec, studio chief and retailer, fears a Betamax-VHS redux -- a format war that would irritate and confuse consumers. After all, if folks don't know which player to buy, they might walk out empty-handed. "If that happens," one top entertainment exec quips, "I think someone from Wal-Mart is going to take a gun and shoot one of them."

"Once Microsoft picked sides it was clear we were going to be in a battle royale," Stringer says, vowing to protect his turf. "We won't be stampeded" by Microsoft into rushing decisions "that are there forever."

One strange twist in the battle is that Toshiba is working with Sony and IMB to produce the cell chip that's the foundation of Blu-ray -- a topsy-turvy scenario that only serves to underscore the contortions Stringer finds himself performing these days. "One day my enemy is my enemy," he says. "The next day the enemy is my friend."
